I feel like the ideal combo would be western writers with a Japanese animation team. Give me actual frame-by-frame animation, I tire of puppets.

They have before! G1 was animated by Toei, there's probably multiple studios that would love to draw ponies.

I like FiM PRECISELY because it is a cartoon.
There are animes that I really like but I've always been more into western stuff, even if many japanese shows are arguably better.
Personally, I think FiM would be better if the story-boarder's art styles got less homogenized during the animation process (and likely mistranslated if my suspicions about S9 faces are correct). I've seen some early seasons animatics and they look nice as fuck.
