Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

Ok, I might have picked the easiest path by drawing this perspective, but I tried to have in mind the small snout idea here, I am satisfied with the end result, however I've noticed I might be drawing my ponies too slim and neck too tall.

slim and tall, aka lanky, are a valid style that I like quite a bit. I think fleetfoot's head is proportionally a bit small here and that's what's throwing you off.

>>
>>43188142
how often do you draw? i could understand if you you drew 100+ images per year but if you only do like 10 then whats the issue?
>>
>>43188142
the curse of only drawing shit in 3/4's is a strong one indeed. use references, do different stuff, and youll quit stagnating
>>
>>43188148
like a couple of times a week I guess
>>43188321
i do other perspectives sometimes, frankly i just think i hit a cognitive limit a long time ago and no amount of effort can overcome it, adhd is a true disease that needs to be cured
>>
>>43188386
yeah that'll do it, if you want to make more progress its gonna take higher volume on top of what >>43188321 recommended.
I did daily draws for my first year of drawing and made a fuck ton of progress that way. then near daily draws the 2nd year as well, I slowed down recently though. went from this https://derpibooru.org/images/3197656?q=artist%3Ascandianon to this https://derpibooru.org/images/3521170?q=artist%3Ascandianon in about a year and a half roughly. remember to experiment too cause trying new shit out and stepping out of your comfort zone is important for growing.
>>
>>43188142
I think your art is still good, even if you don't feel you've made much progress over the years. I like the Super Saiyan alicorn.
>>
>>43188142
That's more or less how my art journey is feeling as well.
But in my case, I know it's because I'm lazy and comfortable, and don't put much active effort into learning. So I try not to beat myself up too much over it, like >>43188148 implies.
I'm more angry at myself for all the fun idea sketches that I never get back to finishing.

I've tried, it doesn't work for me. adhd makes it impossible to function, I've nearly had aneurysms before at my desk trying to make my hands move without success, I need a cure for it to stand even a chance at improving.

This is a very pretty and evocative scene, anon! The hatch shading is very nice.
Though I will nitpick that the perspective depth of the concert hall is a little bit hard to make out, so it looks a bit shallow and flat.

Your ponies are always so incredibly cute, even when they are just a pile of guide lines. It's crazy.

That’s funking amazing! You really captured my style ,the thin legs, the eyes, and the line art. The background with the pink sky and peach clouds is especially impressive. Thank you!
>>
>>43199701
Thank You! It was a lot of fun to do!
My doodle-fu confidence is poor though, so there was some guide layers and quite lot of time and fiddling behind it.
Backgrounds and perspective is something I'm slowly working on right now, so it did get some extra love.
Minnie is such a very blue mare, so I wanted to create more contrast than the blue sky I tried first. You use some rad sky and cloud colors now and again, so I took inspiration and experimentally went with a much more chromatically intense sunset sky than I've ever tried, and it turned out really cool.

And I wanna emphasize the fairly evident: that I drew it because I really like the stuff you do! I love your animations and your art! Keep on trucking, king!
Nice that architect anonpone gets to be happy together with Whoa, the biggest price of them all.

All of these 'Rarity in royal clothing' images are very nice! She looks very self assured!
Drawing all the fancy gowns and accessories onto a pony is something I haven't fully braved yet. Rarity certainly is the one to do it with!
Yes, the cat/dog style sitting pose must be tricky to make look right. I've never drawn a pony doing it, much less while trying to look dignified, so I don't have any tips.

I'm envious of your dedication to grind all those poses and angles. That's the kinda shit that lets one git gud!
I also enjoy those bonus parts that that one over there has.
>>
>>43200080
I love her eyes not being the usual shape, it really makes this funny and appealing. Gonna color? I feel like the lines are really lively so maybe keeping the sketch is good and coloring with multiply or underneath on a layer.

I agree with the other anon, I love a lanky pony and the hatching is immaculate. However the hind legs have an extra join between the hoof and the hock that doesn't make much sense - it seems like you drew out the 'wrist, i.e. the fetlock joint and the pastern bones, but it comes off as really odd to me.

Haven't drawn pony (or anything else) in months and was feeling guilty. I'm too lazy to finish my idea right now but here is a Twilight who did not expect anyone to notice her sneaking around late at night. Second time drawing Twilight, third time with a canon pony, maybe 6th time drawing a pony at all, so despite noticing a lot of issues I am proud of the fact I don't feel disgusted looking at it. I notice a lot of things I need to work on and will probably force myself to practice more, sadly I might also need to not draw ponies for a bit and actually study art fundamentals.

First time trying to make a walk cycle
>>
>>43214162
OK, I see multiple things wrong
One thing is that you have no idea what the major keyframes are, and are trying to compensate (this results in all legs looking janky as they try to move)
Your timing is off on the rear and front legs, the moment the front leg moves forward and is at its peak keyframe, the opposite leg backward should already be at its peak keyframe too.
The legs are also very stiff, you could use some knowledge of arcs and tweening/squeeze/squash.

Flash is where it's at for amateur animators, I guess there's Toonboom too. You've already got the foundation laid out for you (hasbro's official show assets), so why not use them? Vectors are just about infinitely editable and scalable and can be adapted for many things.

Yeah, part of me was playing into it / exaggerated it, but drunk me was sad.
Reading some of the IDW comics, I think Rarity became my "Literally Me" character.
I wish she was still canonically the "Inspiration" element, feels more fitting I think.

> Rarity, She is a selfless love,
> An eternal form of beauty,
> The absolute icon of inspiration.
> Holier beyond compare to anypony, mare or colt,
> For upon Her birth, all of heaven sprung up in triumph.

> To look at Her is to hear a grand orchestral concert,
> Or to feel the eudaimonia of an Orthodox church choir.
> To paint Her is to submit to a doomed endeavor,
> To be possessed by the love of beauty and excellence,
> And to forever enslave oneself to the imitations of the form.

> How is one to live in a doomed world?
> Only through a supremacist pursuit of excellence.
> Lest one to die in hopeless grief,
> By the world that seeks its own degeneration.

Was talking to a friend the other day and brought up that I have aphantasia, said friend asked me a week ago to draw him a cheerilee. I've been wanting to draw a depiction of how I experience aphantasia for a while but have been putting it off But I've finally decided to do it. when It comes to willingly conjuring up mental images I am completely and totally unable to do so at all. I do on rare occasion get image flashes in a manner similar to >picrel usually its a bit faster and the image is a bit more blue, it only happens if my eyes are closed and I have no control over it what so ever. I'm only sharing this because the topic is absolutely fascinating to me and I would totally love to see if anyone else has a similar experience to me. or I would love to see others drawing shit in the way they see mental images.

For me it's almost the opposite, I can get fairly clear pictures of what I want to draw but my skills aren't quite up to snuff to properly convey how they look. Also if I try to focus too hard on specific details they start shifting or doing some weird vertigo camera stuff. Not to the point they're permanently warped, though. I just have to zoom out to the bigger picture and they correct themselves. In this one for example >>43194150 I ignored the shading and hot pink design on her dress in my head until after I had the rest at an acceptable spot while for this one >>43216561 I had almost the whole thing in mind as I was making it. I was re-reading Piesinful's fantastic Unlucky Day comic and paused to just do a quick doodle from it for myself.
But even though I was just slapping down some color shapes and threw some clipping layers on top, it somehow turned out way more visually appealing than I'd imagined.

>>43235244
brother I'm gonna put this as politely as humanly possibly, your heads need more work. you're still doing the same mistake of making the head to small and the chest too big. it's like my last recommendations rolled off your back like water on a duck. I'd also recommend bigger eyes and more rounded snoots both are more appealing. the rest of the anatomy is passable, personally I'd give the mane more volume, and the curl count doesn't matter nearly as much as you think. no one is going to count them unless they have a hate boner for you which is unlikely.
>>
>>43235244
seconding what the other anon said. I like to see that you're using the three circle method to construct, but the point of construction is to make a good, well-proportioned foundation you can easily tinker with before you go adding detail that's hard to fix. The chest circle should be the smallest, and the head circle should be about the same size as the butt circle.
Aside from the head size in relation to the body, the snoot is also too big in relation to the head, and should be rounded, like the other anon said (it sticks out too far and should have no sharp angles, at very least no sharp chin). Legs also need to be a little bigger all around, and remember they steadily taper larger towards big ol hoofas.

>>43235418
obv there's a lot to improve on, but the most important piece of advice for you is bigger eyes. Like way bigger, they should take up most of the face. Their shape is nice and appealing though, remember to scale up the pupil as you scale up the eye. Otherwise just keep having fun and you will improve everywhere!

>figure out how to fold a pony into a ball
It's not really that hard. I more or less just ignored anatomy constraints because it's a weird cartoon fetish and the character can be squished down however. The biggest pain for the ball effect was trying to get the curvature right.

>>43233208
Supposed to be a ball. The mare thief was flattened and crushed down by a protective ward when she tried to steal that artifact and the mage is picking her up to transport to the Royal Guard. Alternatively, you could imagine the mage doing the compressing herself as well. I went with a "flattening" effect instead of a smooth sphere because that's my primary fetish.

I agree really and that was the original plan, but then I cleaned up some lines and tried to give her a creepy stare and she ended up looking cute, almost sentient even and it grew on me. Like looking at a semi-intelligent ape at the zoo, It made me wonder if the fence is truly justified. It probably is because she would eat everything without remorse if she was free, but it feels like an ethical dilemma.

based also goddamn you have some exquisite hand writing brother. I have some limited advice one piece is to lighten up on the pressure you shouldn't be trying to kill the paper lmao. second would be to get familiar with the pencil hardness scale, https://pencils.com/pages/hb-graphite-grading-scale ,generally speaking H series are hard B series are soft with the B being black, the number indicated different lead blends which further refines the hardness/blackness scale. generally harder pencils are better for sketching and drafting because they leave a lighter mark on the paper and are easier to erase because they don't smudge, where as softer black lead is better for lining or scenarios where you need more contrast black leads are more prone to smudging though kinda like charcoals. You will have to experiment with what you got available though as there is no industry standard with pencils and they all vary by region and company. I'd probably recommend trying out an F or H pencil for your sketch then lining with a either a standard HB 2 or or a B and then going there based on your preferences.

This is good anon, your eye is improving. As your eye gets better, that raises the ceiling of how good you can draw. Stepping back, taking breaks, and getting a new perspective on your art is a pretty important part of the workflow, or else you will focus in and lose sight of the whole picture. This is why people talk about flipping their drawing upside down or side to side, to see it more objectively without your brain getting in the way and saying "ah yeah that's just a pretty pony"
>>
>>43242359
>>
>>43245118
It's normal, that's why it's recommended to take breaks when drawing. Also flipping the canvas can help spot out any issues you didn't notice.

good evening /bale/!
i’ve been drawing all my life but i was an impatient kid and resisted learning fundamental skills like sketching and reducing things into basic shapes. i’ve had less time for digital art lately but ive been doodling lots and lots of pones in my notebook, trying to focus on bodies and facial structure and all that.

>>43248335
it doesn’t look too bad to me, anon. shaping things in a 3d space is none too easy but maybe you can find the angle you need if you just look for more references.

>>
>>43248345
thank you anon! facial expressions have always been one of my biggest focuses in art.
>>43248345
don’t be discouraged! a weird method i tend to fall into that you can try is making the face you’re trying to draw while you’re drawing it. focus on the muscles in your face that are being stressed the most- those are the parts of the face that should be exaggerated! also, keeping the pupils consistent and making sure they’re focusing on something will keep your character looking alive.
and again, there’s always the obvious: use references! is there an artist whose expressions you really love? just start copying them!

You're using their body circles and face angles way better than I've been able to!

>>43248335
It is a good draw, anon!
I drew a redline with what I'd try with the face. But know that I also struggle with angled faces, and all the things I changed here are stuff that I usually struggle with getting right myself, and also some personal preferences, so take it with a grain of salt.
The main thing I messed with is the leftmost eye. I made the eye narrower and a bit taller, and I tried to line it up with the nose/right eye combo as best I could .
And then I struggled to get the eye to actually look at me, like >>43248405 mentions. I'm not sure I got it entirely right this time either.
I also pulled in the cheek/jaw to streamline the face circle.

Really hard for me the timing on this. If I put few frames it looks too fast, is not noticeable and doesn't have any impact but if I do in-betweening looks too slow and without the appropriate speed. Any suggestion?
>>
>>43253223
I kinda feel like the whole slap happens a bit too quickly, even though Flawless' hoof indeed travels fairly slowly.
If the context of the ass-slap is humorous, I'd try leaning into it being a high speed slap.
Have Flawless hold her hoof up earlier and a little longer to build anticipation while letting the viewer register that she's up to something.
And then have only one fairly quick and very wide/exaggerated smear of her hoof going directly to the stationary "end" frame on Twi's rump. And then add something like a classic "whip-crack" sound effect to it all, which will both draw attention to and lend more impact to the slap animation.

I also feel like Twi's "wide eye" reaction is a bit too short. It looks like it is currently bound to the "ass impact" frame, so another thing to try could be to make a frame where she still has her wide eyed face, but with her normal rump, and to have a couple more of that "still wide-eyed" frame so her emotion has time to register.

Dunno how well all that would work in practice. Maybe even only adding the whip sound effect would be enough. But those are my suggestions.

That's okay, I'll just keep spending 8+ hours on pieces that aren't nearly as good lol. The ability to create anything is a blessing even when it's outshined by others. I say keep posting here because I love your art and energy

it’s my recommendation that you just study some cartoons. pay close attention to scenes with this kind of thing happens and take into account how long it takes for an action like this. hell, go frame by frame if you need to.

Are there any armor/medieval weapon autists in this thread? I have a card game where the idea was for the weapon to be separate from like holding it to make animating easier. Can anyone recommend some like obscure swords, spears, or other things that just plain look cool and would be fun to draw/design?

>>
>>43253497
I'm no expert at drawing, but in my opinion you really shouldn't spend too much time on a single piece, especially when you are in the beginner stages. It's better to draw more individual drawings then spend too much time trying to make one drawing perfect. Plus, I think imperfections give the art character, when they aren't too horrible.
>>
>>43254613
Are you using Flash or Animate? Can I guide you to a copy of the leaked assets? You can use them to help compare to your own puppets without using the whole thing.
>>43255295
A fair number of people tell me they like my loose gesture sketches, as much or more than the finished colored + inked pieces. I think spending extra time thumbnailing variants is good unless you just hit the jackpot the first time.
>>
>>43255311
Sketching has an inherent character to it. If you're not careful at your inking stage, you can remove that. It's a common issue.
And yeah, it's good as a beginner to just sketch various amounts of poses without spending too much time on them. I used to be a perfectionist and stopping this finally made me become somewhat decent.

Anyone here paint? I'm trying to do an underpainting and all I have is neutral gray, white and black but it's hard to get the exact grey colors I need just out of those 3 before my paint dries up completely. (Acrylic) Should I worry about values again after I glaze the colors, or should I try harder now to fix the contrast issues of patchiness of the light and darks not really matching?

Made another piece of fetish art. I have begun the descent into insanity that is lighting and shading. I'm shocked how hard the stone lines were to draw. Too wiggly and they looked like bad line art. Too neat and straight and they looked artificial and fake. Might just be the price I have to pay for using a mouse and keyboard instead of the drawing tablet that's collecting dust.
>>
>>43256666
You did that with a mouse? Color me impressed! I think the cracks look great, the art looks very professional like something I'd see on Neopets with that clean flash look. Also, nice quads.

I keep telling myself that I should have properly learned how to draw ten years ago, so let's see how I'll be doing in ten years from now. Haven't drawn since 2023, I'll start to get back into it by ponifying the memes I have saved, my goal for now is to do two pieces a week. Here's today.

I technically started learning how to draw about a year ago, inspired mostly by Tamers12345 and his unholy output and the occasionally adorable frames he can make.

Only totaled maybe six actual pieces since then, but I came back recently for some doodles and I'm pretty happy with them. In the mood to continue soon.
>>
>start drawing eyes for the first time
>hey, this isn't as bad as I thought it'd be
>draw the pupils
>what the fuck
>save it after an hour of tweaking things and give up for the day
>>
>>43261070
It's looking good!
I hope Tamers actually is two dudes, or more, for his sake. Because, like you say, the furious pace of frame drawing that must be going on is truly staggering, as well as the fairly common appearance of those cute effort frames.
It's cool that it seems to have been a fairly common inspiration and motivation to start "just draw":ing for many who hadn't really thought of it.
