It is essentially a moon.The eternal winter and eternal night became the basis for Windigo myth and Nightmare Moon myth.Becase new sun is not perfect - ponies had to become custodians of nature. They control the passage of seasons, weather and daily/yearly cycles of the sun. My headcanon is that pre-new sun all ponies were alicorns. Some donated almost all their magic and became earth ponies, free to pursue their destinies. Some donated half, becoming pegasi, the custodians of weather. Some donated less and became unicorns, the custodians of the sun and moon.Later Celestia and Luna took over the sun and moon duties and weather became more stable. This freed unicorns and most pegasi to pursue their own destinies.

For example:In the episode where Twi takes all alicorn magic we see her raising the sun and fumbling it around the sky. The effect is instantaneous. Our sun is 8 light minutes away from us, so any magic-induced movements would appear in the sky after 8 minutes. This is why equestrian fake sun is less than 1 light second away from the planet. Or in pony universe the light speed is much higher, but this also alters physics in enormous ways that cause even more troublesome things that would need explaining.Isn't it fun? Not everything posted here is posted with the intent of presenting it as indisputable fact. This is not /pol/ nor /sci/. It's fantasy fun.
