Decided to make a thread for the TCG since I didn't want to spam /merch/ with too many cardboard posts and also realized that fa/tg/uys can't post about it on their board without risking a ban.

The My Little Pony Trading Card Game by Kayou (not to be confused with their CCG) is releasing very soon in the US, but some stores have already been carrying it for a week or two.
The available products are six Starter Decks based on each member of the Main 6 as well as the first booster pack set, which uses season 1 as a design base.
The gameplay centers around a simple 1v1 race to the finish, mostly focused on board-based interaction and 'tribal' synergies with really open deckbuilding.
Feel free to discuss, complain, recommend, post your pulls,... whatever card related thing you want!

I'll talk about my experience playing so far later, but I want to start with a post regarding the wider set design and the next product for CN.
As mentioned, the sets use particular sections of episodes as their general theme. Set 1 is based on most of season 1, set 2 on half of S2 and the remainder of S1, etc.
Thanks to this pattern, we know that booster set 5 will be about MMC and Twilight's ascension. This is obviously a big deal for multiple reasons. New Twilight cards will no longer be counted as 'Unicorn' related, which carries gameplay implications as well design and balance ones. Because of this, we can expect 'Alicorn' support to become more prevalent from now on. Princess Luna and Cadance already have multiple cards, but this part of their kit has been unexplored.
You may have noticed that I left another very important Alicorn out, that's because Celestia doesn't have ANY cards so far. Philomena, her pet phoenix, has THREE (3) of them already. Obviously, this is very strange.
The best explanation I can think of is that they're saving her for a second set of Starter Decks, alongside maybe a Villain themed deck since they've been teasing that too. We're nearing the 1st anniversary of the TCG in a couple of months, so they could be saving it for then.

Last bump from me before I'll just let this thread die. Don't want to turn this into a personal blogposting thing.

I managed to rope two other people into playing the TCG with me a fair few times now. Each of us bought a box per product and used proxies for whatever we didn't have and wanted to try. We structured our sessions by using one product line on its own and then the next one with the previous set(s) combined.
So, in practice:
Session 1 - SD boxes
Session 2 - BP1
Session 3 - SD+BP1
Session 4 - BP2
etc.

So my experience isn't crazy extensive, but I've seen a good variety of cards in play.
The game is very much still in its 'cavemare' era where strong tempo on the board is far more rewarding than most combo or high value plays. This also leads to some 'archetypes' being less competitively viable than others due to a lack of in-depth support. A good example is Rarity's secondary gimmick from her SD. She got advertised with a 'counter' playstyle, but this doesn't really work out in practice.
Some cards have the 'Pre-plan' keyword. These cards activate a special effect when they are used as a 'plan' and activate when 'attacked', somewhat similar to trap cards in Yu-Gi-Oh. However, normally you can't choose which cards you use as your 'plans'. Your initial four plans are taken from the top of your deck at the start of the game, meaning you can't influence them at all. It's only in later sets that this has gotten a bit of traction with cards that can set more plans mid-game or let you at least see which plans you have set. It doesn't help that a lot of pre-plan effects are quite underwhelming and not worth building around.

So far, it feels like Twilight, AJ and Fluttershy are generally the strongest with Dash not far behind. Pinkie is quite gimmicky with a lot of equipment synergies, but still performs decently. Rarity has some standout cards, but she feels limited by the current card selection.
Decks aren't restricted to just being based around a M6 member, but it felt a little easier to center a gameplan around a single character. That being said, a CMC focused strategy functioned quite well too. Could see that doing quite well with more refinement.

Whilst the game is quite simple and has some design flaws, I think it has a bright future as long as it gets continued support and grows a bit more complex over time, which does seem to be Kayou's intent since the latest sets have been introducing new keywords and gimmicks.

I got a few packs of the CCG, I planned on handing them out at Mare Fair. Is the art on the playable game worth it? Or, are they just vectors and screencaps?

The common and uncommon cards are typically vectors/edited screencaps, which isn't as appealing as what some of the lower rarities in the CCG can be, but the higher rarities are of similar quality. The 'story' cards in particular can be really odd. I'll post a comparison in a bit.
Personally, I love the art for the SR (one step above Uncommon) cards. They're always done by the same artist so I can always look forward to them with a new set. Pic related.

I know, I know. I type like a shill. An unfortunate curse. Hard to deny that it looks like an ad either.
Best I can do to disprove that is call Chris Cocks a retarded niggerfaggot, and then point you to the link that lets you play with these cards for free in the OP.

Here's what I was talking about with the story cards.
These types of card, as well as the lower rarity ones, are mostly like this. '''Screencaps''' with edited composition to better accommodate card text or have a different pose as well as added shading plus highlights on characters.
It works better for some cards than they do others. They've also been doing more unique ones with the assets that they have instead of using existing episode caps, though these are often a miss. There's an awful one, that I can't find at the moment, where Big Mac is dragging around Hearth's warming decorations in front of the barn and it's just terrible.
The 'item' cards can also be quite funny looking. They're often random objects from the show on a card and something about that tickles my funny bone. I remember opening a pack with a card I really wanted and that immediately contrasting with the next card being just a dumb little picture of the fan from Hurricane Fluttershy.
