I normally dislike redesigns, but this one got my approval for putting glasses on the nerd. They just fit her perfectly. (I also like how the artist said the glasses after her Ascension are just for show because her vision got fixed when she became an Alicorn, she just feels too used to wearing them.)

I want to counter this by pointing out that Twilight is a much bigger dork, and a much more academic dork, than Luna ever was. Luna's dorkiness in the fandom stems ultimately from her medieval-Equestria culture shock angle, and her difficulties adapting to modern times. There's nothing canon to suggest that Luna loves books or that Twilight loves mind games and psychological manipulation. They're both social outcasts to some extent, but again there are important differences that people miss. Twilight is awkward, and her outcast-ness stems from a lack of social experience and close-mindedness. Luna, on the other hand, is aloof and mysterious by nature, being nocturnal; nothing suggests she lacks social graces beyond the aforementioned culture shock which doesn't even last far beyond Luna Eclipsed.

I think the people who love both Twilight and Luna as similar characters to each other are engaging with them mainly on a shallow aesthetic level, because they still have very different personalities when you get down to it.
