While I’m pretty settled on each ranking, note that some of the placements within the tiers are pretty interchangeable and I’ll probably change one or two of them by tomorrow). Below are my brief reviews of every episode using a Great/Good/Meh/Bad rating system (Great is S/A tiers, Good is B tier, Meh is C tier, Bad is D/F tiers)Friendship Is Magic - Good: It's not the most interesting thing ever and the second half feels quite rushed, but its a fun introduction to the world and characters.The Ticket Master - Meh: The story is very light and I didn't find it particularly interesting or funny, but it helped introduce the characters’ desires well and had cute moments. Applebuck Season - Good: The gags with Applejack hurting others in various ways and acting weird were really funny and made this episode enjoyable, but the story is a little light and the multiple scenes of Twilight lecturing Applejack felt repetitive. Griffon the Brush-Off - Great: Seeing Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash become friends was really charming and the humor was really good. I also like the nuance in the storytelling of Pinkie Pie doubting her own role and considering if she was the problem and trying to befriend Gilda.Boast Busters - Bad: The episode paints Trixie as being in the wrong for showing off during a performance (the job of a performer is literally to show off) so the moral is completely confused. Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash are completely hypocritical in trying to heckle and show off at Trixie's event, making them annoying and unlikeable.Dragonshy - Great: It's a really fun adventure where Fluttershy gets to shine, with lots of fun mane 6 interaction and tense moments. It feels like a better version of Friendship is Magic Part 2.Look Before You Sleep - Meh: Applejack's and Rarity's arguing gets pretty grating and Twilight is turned into a clueless idiot during the storm. But theres plenty of sweet and cute moments and I like some of the character interaction, so it has its value.Bridle Gossip - Meh: The curses are funny and creative, but the mane 6 minus Twilight are unlikeable in irrationally they judged Zecora and the moral was very heavy-handed and obviousSwarm of the Century - Great: This was just plain fun with all of the attempts to contain the parasites creating a lot of action and fun gags. The execution of the moral is admittedly flawed since it should have acknowledged that Pinkie easily could have explained herself, but that doesn't bug me enough to lower the rating.Winter Wrap Up - Good: The story isn't super interesting and it's not the most funny, but it has interesting worldbuilding and great music.(1/3)
Call of the Cutie - Good: The story is solid and it introduces Applebloom and the CMC very well with cute moments. I wouldn't argue with anyone who does consider this great, but I personally just don't find it quite that interesting since im not the biggest Apple Bloom fan. Fall Weather Friends - Great: The competitions and the racing is really funny with a lot of action and comedy, and Applejack and Rainbow Dash's dynamic is really fun, with them being good friends being carried away with the competition. Its balanced well so that it doesn't feel overly mean. Spike and Pinkie announcing was also fun.Suited for Success - Great: Great song, and a great story for Rarity that shows her artistic process with good commentary on the dangers of giving people exactly what they claim they want when they don't understand the product. It also has a lot of good jokes and cute moments. Feeling Pinkie Keen - Meh: Twilight is portrayed poorly since she fails to follow the science at all by loudly denying clear evidence of the Pinkie-Sense being valid and her pitiful “experiment” attempt (where she tries to measure the Pinkie-Sense in an environment where no stimuli would trigger it and rage quits after seconds). The moral is extremely confused to the point where people thought it was some weird religion vs. atheism thing. As poor as the writing is, this episode is a guilty pleasure of mine because Pinkie Pie is so likeable in it and there is so much great comedy and cool action. I have this in A tier on the tier list only because that ranking is based purely on my enjoyment.Sonic Rainboom - Great: Seeing Cloudsdale was fun and interesting, Rainbow Dash has a great story about her insecurities and how she overcame to save Rarity, and the climax is amazing.Stare Master - Good: I really liked Fluttershy here and it had a pretty good story with the Everfree Forest (with the cockatrice being really cool), but the CMC being a bit annoying drags it down a bit.The Show Stoppers - Bad: There is very little substance or story here, it is basically just the CMC being dumb and annoying. And topped off with a terrible song! Yes, the song is supposed to be bad, but comedically bad songs can be done in a way where it doesn't sound terrible to the audience (think Patrick's song from Spongebob).A Dog and Pony Show - Great: Rarity is awesome by using her charisma and other's expectations of her to her advantage, which was very entertaining and made a great moral. The diamond dogs are fun antagonists, Spike is likeable, and the others trying to find Rarity was also really fun.Green Isn't Your Color - Great: It was sweet to see Rarity and Fluttershy bond, and they had a great and realistic indirect conflict. Twilight, Spike, and Pinkie Pie had a fun dynamic here too. Overall a very sweet and funny episode. (2/3)
Over a Barrel - Great: This episode was really fun, had a cool new location and action, had a lot of great slapstick and other humor, and presented interesting commentary on how outside forces can make conflicts worse, since the two sides of the dispute were more willing to compromise until Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie all pissed them off. A Bird in the Hoof - Meh: The plot here was pretty light (it takes 7 minutes for the conflict to actually start followed by a boring minutes-long sequence of Fluttershy trying to heal the bird) and most of the jokes involving the bird did nothing for me. That being said, the episodes kept my attention outside of that one sequence, and I did enjoy some of the antics at the party (as little as it connected to the story) as well as Fluttershy and Twilight's dynamic. The Cutie Mark Chronicles - Great: Each of the mane six's stories were very well told (especially with how little time each one had), the setup with the CMC wanting their stories was cute and fun, and having the sonic rainboom help all of them get their Cutie marks was such a great way to tie everything together. It really built off of the backstory from Sonic Rainboom to make it all the more special.Owl's Well That Ends Well - Bad: Its the typical jealously plot line that is really annoying to watch, coupled with the obvious issue of twilight saying she needed Owlowiscious's help at night when he was only shown helping during the day, and her and the rest of the mane 6 coming off as shallow by showering Owlowiscious, who they had just met, with just as much affection as they gave Spike. The only thing I like here is the cozy meteor shower scene at the beginning.Party of One - Great: Pinkie was really likeable and funny here throughout with all her antics and especially here going crazy. Her friends’ lies were also funny, and the ending was super sweet. The plot is light here, but there's enough great humor throughout where it's not a problem here.The Best Night Ever - Great: The song is great obviously. While each of the mane 6’s stories here are simple, seeing their evenings all slowly go to crap is fun and makes for a lot of funny moments. Celestia hating the Gala was a fun twist that makes perfect sense, and the ending was super sweet.(3/3)Stats:12 Great6 Good5 Meh3 BadGOOD SEASONOverall, the season was pretty good, with the episode quality definitely improving as it went. I plan to do one of these threads for each season as I rewatch the show. From memory, season 4 was easily the best season and I don’t think that will change, but I’m interested in how I will end up ranking the rest of the first 5 seasons (which is the part of the show I consider good). I am not very familiar with post-Season 5 since I only watched most of the later episodes once years ago, so maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised with the later stuff? I just remember most of seasons 6-9 being pretty meh.

FiM Parts 1 and 2 might be the biggest discrepancy in quality of all the two-parters in the show. I don't understand how anyone can rank both of them on the same level. And Owl's Well That Ends Well is like this invisible point where Twilight starts treating Spike like a younger brother rather than a gag. Would've worked better focusing on her learning not to take him for granted instead to make the transition smoother.

I see Sonic Rainboom and Party of One are all sitting comfy on the top of the lists as usual.Nice to see that Ticket Master and Pinkie Keen has some fans in here too. They're probably the most underrated and overhated episodes of S1 respectively.Some of you are crazy though. How can op put Look Before You Sleep in C tier? >>43232496Feeling Pinkie Keen is ridiculously underrated. It's nonstop great the entire time with its character interaction to worldbuilding and adventure. While there's plenty of better episodes because season 1 as a whole is amazing, FPK is genuinely as good as the best golden era nicktoons and cartoon network shows. My other underrated favorite is Green isn't your Color. It's one of the few full on girly episodes played straight but perfect in its character interactions.

My issue with Feeling Pinkie Keen is that the story and Twilight's charactization throughout were very flawed on top of the confusing moral. Its a very fun episode that I like, but I cant in good faith call it good. It was one of Mr. Enter's favorite episodes of the show even though he considered it a bad episode lol

So:Season 1A (Episodes 1-13):4 Great5 Good3 Meh1 BadI'd rate it a good half season, but it is definitely not great, the show is still finding its footing.Season 1B (Episodes 14-26):8 Great1 Good2 Meh2 BadWell that was a massive improvement (despite strangely have one more bad episode than 1A)! And note that one of those mehs, Feeling Pinkie Keen, is a guilty pleasure that I like more than some episodes I rated great. So it's definitely a great half season.

Ironically Feeling Pinkie Keen is also one of season 1's funniest episodes, and in that one instance think the story and moral are pretty bad
