Funny enough I remember waayyyy back in the good old days when they first appeared that their actual drawbacks were kind of brilliant and that they were designed to get around them as best as possible, yet could never truly escape it.

It was one of those rare extra races that worked because while they were potentially overpowered, they also had the distinct handicap that they would never be strong on their own. They had to take love, or die. They had to gain love from a particularly strong source, or they could easily be defeated. They were a threat, but one that would ultimately inevitably destroy themselves when the things they siphoned love from either were drained like Shining or became unable to love and make more offspring. They would have died off if they ever actually won so their only real hope would have been to live in harmony and use those immense powers to earn love shared over time through good deeds and heroics, they would be amazing guards, pop stars or politicians because the better they were at their job the better they were in general. But without it, they literally just fucking die. A truly unique and special kind of race you didn't see anywhere else with endless potential to it.

Their food source, attachment to heat sources like Lava and more specifically their super long nap times. The entire reason why reptiles blood is cold is because none of the digestion process goes towards maintaining body temperature like it does in mammals. We burn calories to maintain our body temp but it's a much different process with them, which is why we have to eat frequently while, say, a snake could last weeks on one meal. The long slumber dragons go through point towards a more similar type of digestion of their food that can last a long time.

That said fire-breathing would be a piss poor body regulation so I dunno what he's on about, the work would be frequent and intentional since even a super hot fire would dissipate any effect on them within minutes, the food they eat burned up ten times as fast meaning they'd have to eat as frequently as a mammal without the involuntary monitoring and it would ultimately be a bunch of waste going out in every direction except the one you wanted.
