I'd probably go for the middle of a national park, they can almost certainly bring through chariots and the like for getting around but starting off in nature is probably going to feel better than being near civilization. There's some minor risk of unmanaged nature being uncomfortable for them but it's still the least worst option, I think.

Pegasi with weather controlling abilities could prevent the frequent droughts and bushfires the country experiences, and might even be able to terraform the massive uninhabitable outback desert in the interior of the continent into usable land. In exchange Australia has practically unlimited raw mineral and food wealth to offer, or might act as a stable, sovereign mediator for relationships between Equestria and other Earth nations. It's objectively one of the top contenders for best country to put the portal to Equestria in, much more so than an avaricious superpower like the US or China. I don't know how the ponies would feel about the country's aerial culling of wild horses though...
