Friendship is literally magic in-universe, and while I'm sure it's intended as a nice theming for the kiddos, it's also pretty well established in-show, at least early season, that a lot of their strength stems from their friendship. To give up on one would be to give up on the other, and Twilight giving up on friendship is utterly incongruent with her character. It would be like if Celestia stopped believing in the sun.
