New viewer, first time watcher here. I've been enjoying it enough so far. Show is pretty cute and wholesome. Character designs are great. It's definitely been growing on me, as have the characters. Pinkie Pie was quite annoying to me at first and easily my least favorite of the mane ponies, but I kinda like her now. Rainbow Dash is definitely my favorite pony. Are there any canon spin offs, shorts, or movies or anything that I should make sure to watch during this? I will say however that I still feel weird for watching this. It's like it's something I shouldn't be doing. I'd rather be caught watching porn than watching MLP. I know for now Derpy is just a background character, but does she ever become a reoccurring side character, or is she mostly relegated to the background with rare minor appearances?

Derpy will get a couple speaking roles but she'll never be a secondary character. After season 3 you can start watching Equestria Girls (a spinoff that has weird-colored humans doing highschool shit) but it's definitely not necessary. If you're solely interested in ponies, there's a movie that released after season 7 (though it doesn't really fit into the show) and there's two standalone specials called The Best Gift Ever and Rainbow Roadtrip which came out between season 8 and season 9. None of these are explicitly necessary to watch, they don't link into the show or anything, but they're there if you're interested.

I think what I hate the most was outright fan pandering, instead of just nice Easter eggs like the aforementioned Derpy in the intro holding a muffin (on the train that passes by).

There are also some optional canon specials you can watch anytime after that point too.There's a couple spin offs, Pony Life and Equestria Girls which are very hit or miss. PL is a wackier zoomified version of FiM and EG is a bootleg japanese moe anime. Neither are nearly as good as FiM.>I will say however that I still feel weird for watching this.As saccharine as it is Faust created this cute cartoon to be enjoyable to all ages. I loved when later seasons began to tackle more mature topics and complex stories that are more relatable to adults, my personal favorite seasons are S5 and S6.

With the exception of Fluttershy, at that point in the series the M6 were pretty rude and disrespectful to him, despite supposedly having reformed him. So from his PoV, ponies treated him with disdain, the 'Princess of Friendship' was a slanderous hypocrite, and Celestia (according to her own words) only wanted to use him.I'm currently re-watching the series, but from what I remember, his behavior gets less justifiable in the later seasons (after multiple episodes where his relationship builds with the ponies, only for him to betray them again). The 'testing them' justification doesn't really hold up at that point.
