I think it's a good lesson for people to remember to look around themselves and capture things that might be going on, even if it doesn't involve them specifically. That can be hard, though, since you aren't always going to be aware of it if you aren't involved with it. And it's especially hard if we're adding "don't be cringe" to the equation, because let's face it, we're all awkward autists here.

Anyone can take that extra step to simply look around them and see the things that popens are doing. One of the things popen SL excels at is just these goofy little slice-of-life moments, so please do capture those whenever possible.

Many of the people I knew are still around and it also helps to just hang out with the ponies no matter if new or old. Over the years I kept meeting great horses from here. If I just stuck permanently with the same set I met back then I'd feel like it would have been an insane waste of great opportunities of great times spent with ponies.

2 was going to be my main inspo when I compiled these references, as it was the singular 3D example I had that wasn't the squishy bean frog style, while 3 I put there more for the general hoof shape than the frog itself
it seems for you at least that 4, 5, 6 are the main ones I should find myself referencing tho
I will also note that I wanted to add a smidge more hoof/ankle definition but some others have done as much already and it hasn't been terribly favorably received

Honestly it's a good inspo for the general shape, it's just that around the frog the rest of the hoof is literally just a concave flat plane. If you don't copy it exactly but add a proper hoof wall then it'll be pretty good.

That's fair yeah, its contour shape is actually pretty decent. I'm not sure if I prefer 3's contours, 4's much more angular back, or 6 style with a cutoff wall, I'd probably be happy with any of these (or ecstatic with variants for different options, and the resulting hoof variety on popens, but I imagine that'll probably be literally 3x the work lamo).

Modular hoofa, shoe mesh choice and underhoof mesh choice, the (p)open hoofa dream, could maybe even kitbash some older hoofa to fit.
My personal favorites are 2 and 6, for me the shoe, toe and hoof wall are far more important to look good than the underhoof, which IMO is far too easy to overdo or overshadow the design.
