General thread for greentexts. Feel free to share some of your favorite greens, some of your most hated greens, or even some of your greens! You could post greens that don't have anywhere else to go.Share prompts as well. Let's copy the draw thread and use /r/ somewhere in your prompts so I can find them easy. I will be taking them and writing a green every day. I've convinced myself this is the way to write regularly again.
>>43432639Anon's caravan gets robbed by an outlaw mare and her posse. He shamelessly flirts with her the whole time much to her chagrin.
gonna share these two greens from the 'Ponies Kissing Anon' thread we had a few months back; they're the only two that did not get binned afaik.>Twilighthttps://desuarchive.org/mlp/thread/43274481/#43278308>Rarityhttps://desuarchive.org/mlp/thread/43281096/#43282847
Hasn't this exact thread been unsuccessfully attempted multiple times over?
>>43433604You could say that about most threads on the board
Anon has a cavity so he goes to see Colgate. Unfortunately for Anon, Colgate's many years of dental experience are with horses, not humans.
do people take horses to go to the dentist irl? are there horse dentists?
>>43433604It was a thing, once, when this board got more content. Now there's only a handful of greens ongoing and they're all in their respective generals, apart Growfag's CYOA that's in its own thread when he has time to write.
>>43434643I can't believe Greentext is fucking dead
>>43434643interesting digits anon. I for one welcome this thread, I don't like greentext sagas, hopefully in a general thread like this shorts are more likely to thrive. I like shorts because even if they're shit, it's not a big waste of time to read them. My experience is that most anons are not really good enough to make longer form greens worth the effort of keeping up with them.
>>43434701>I like shortscan you name one
>>43434722this one popped up today, I liked it >>43430549it's like a word picture, it tells you just what you need for a little scene, and then it ends. short and sweet.
>>43434729that's more of a prompt/idea than a short green imo but I guess you passed the testI have no gold stars to give you tho
>>43434701I know I could be writing prose instead, but I really like the simplicity of the green format. You need quite a few words to establish characters and make the readers feel something for them, both of which are necessary to tell the stories I want to tell.
>>43432689I think I've forgotten how to write shorts. Anyway, here's what I have so far.>"Ya s-see anythin', Smoky?">"Shut yer damn hayhole 'n' Ah just might.">Only a moment to refocus the spyglass in her hooves and Smoky Wagon found what she was looking for>A lone, tarp-covered cargo wagon hauled by a single weary stallion>More importantly, there was that green thing in the seat>A hue-mane, or some such, she was told>Smoky Wagon saddlebagged the spyglass and rose to her hooves>"Saddle up," she barked at her posse>She tugged her bandana over her muzzle>"We's got work to do." -=-=- "No, see, you're still not getting it. So his name is Rick, right?">"For Celestia's sake, ya've told it eight times alr-" Longhauler's griping trailed off as his ears perked up and swiveled forwards>Following his lead, you squint down the direction of the road>With the sun this low and in your north, you could barely make out the dim shape lying in the dirt>"Is that...Oh my goodness.">Longhauler picked up his pace, making your ass bounce roughly on the shitty excuse for a seat on this wagon"Hey, careful, horse! Precious cargo back here!">"The rocks can handle it." Longhauler shoots back without a glance"I meant me!">As Longhauler trotted on, you were soon able to make out what alerted him>Lying in the middle of the dirt road was a small, pale red pegasus filly>Her mane and tail were so dusty you couldn't make out what color they were supposed to be"Christ...">You can't help but gawk at her as Longhauler shrugs off the wagon's hitch>"Poor lil' ting..." Longhauler coos as he gives the filly an investigative sniff before grabbing her scruff with his teeth>Longhauler gingerly lays the limp foal on the wagon seat beside you"Ah, geez, don't put it-">"Neigh, none o' yer bellyachin'!" Longhauler chides with a firm glare>"Yer gonna give 'er some wa'er, 'nd some shade, 'nd some-oh shite.">As Longhauler had been busy making demands, he'd been returning to the wagon's yoke, only to be confronted by a pair of ponies with bandanas over their muzzles>Their intentions seem less than wholesome>The moment you open your mouth to tell them off, you freeze at the distinct cold of steel against your throat>"Keep ya trap shut, git." A gravelly smug voice whispers in your ear>Your eyes dart to the filly beside you>Gone>"Roadkill bit gets ya goodyfourshoes every time.">The filly sounds extremely pleased with herself as she puts more pressure into the knife on your windpipe>"Look, we don't want any trouble. We don't have any money. Nor valuables." Longhauler explained to the trio, taking a step back>His attempt at gaining some space is halted by a mare twice his size emerging from somewhere out of your periphery and sidling up behind Longhauler>The twitchier of the other two bandits lets out a wheezy chuckle>"H-hear that, Smoky? They say they ain't got no v-valuables!" She snickers, earning a growl from Smoky
>>43435149>"Shut yer damn hayhole! Don't go usin' mah real name around the sundamn marks!">Smoky's voice sounds like the femme fatale from an old movie after a few too many cigarettes>Smoky returns her attention to Longhauler>"If'n ya ain't wantin' trouble, ya best step aside.">You and Longhauler exchange a glance>You both have the same thought>You're not getting paid enough for this>"Aye." Longhauler says with a nod>"Aye, ya can take it.""Yeah, just, let us go.">Smoky points a hoof at Longhauler>"You can git.">Her hoof moves to point at you>"That one stays.">Your immediate protest is silenced by the knife on your neck pressing harder>Longhauler shoots you another glance before galloping off>Traitor>Once he's far enough away, the bandits jump into action>The large mare is hitched to the wagon, the twitchy mare takes her post at the rear, and Smoky climbs up to settle beside you on the seat>With a nod from Smoky, the filly lowers the knife from your neck to poke the tip into the middle of your spine>Smoky clops her hoof on the wooden seat twice and the lot of you are on the move agains>You've got a better view of her now from this close

>>43442802>>43433604What would help things change? Anons that feel like sharing what they write do while those who don't... don't.Very few seem to ask questions about greens too. Or going by the Marefair thread, a lot of anons just want short snippets rather than anything long or drawn out. Or even believe that a green can kill a thread if it's not spaced out enough. Which is odd because sometimes threads will turn into bumpfests of just waiting for a green to continue.I've done a few panels on how to improve your ability to tell stories and learn about characters but I don't know if anyone particularly cares about learning more about that sort of thing. Even when I hosted the panels, there were some writers but also just D&D fans that wanted to learn to make their own characters better for campaigns, and to have those characters have a greater sense of agency.
>>43443326When I was running the previous /green/ general, trying to keep it active and alive, I did a lot:- A green anchor to link greens from other threads- A greenclub to read and review older greens- Reviews for greens posted in the thread- A jam: https://desuarchive.org/mlp/thread/41355731/#41422980- Wrote some greens myself to participateIt still died after 5 threads. I don't regret it; they were great threads with a lot of anon participation. Mind you, this was before the hack. There wasn't as much sliding or board shittery as nowadays. You can find posts about greens dying from 2018, so it's not a new problem. I think /mlp/ just became too apathetic as a board, and many don't see worth in putting effort into greens compared to the reception they'll get. This was always a problem with greens. Both images and fics are better preserved and get more attention in general. I know some will say you should write for the pleasure of writing and not for the attention, but /mlp/ is still a community. Receiving nothing or just a "nice!" is discouraging.Writers who are still here confine themselves to generals because they know they'll at least have a small audience, and generals are more stable than classic threads.A lot of the nostalgia for greens you see posted is performative too: anons who like the idea of greens and recognize they're positive contributions, but will do absolutely nothing to support them, participate, or even read them.I don't know if there can be a green revival, but if so, it would require an insane amount of initial effort to give anons a bit of motivation to participate. The /r/ system is a good idea, but IMO you'll need a stronger initial push for a thread like this to even have a small chance of taking off.As it stands, it just gives the impression that participating isn't worth it since it's already half dead and that only reinforces the idea that it's not worth trying in the future because the last one died after 10 posts.
>>43443432Also, G6 being good could revive them too, but I wouldn't count on that, kek. Still, we should see an initial uptick.
>>43443432>>43443326As another green writer, I think one contributing factor is that modern standards are just a lot higher. Sure there was way more green being written back in the day, but if you actually go back and read it, objectively speaking a lot of it is pretty sloppy and amateurish. People contributed more in the past it seems, even if their contributions weren't to a super high quality. But these days, I think people are just more expectant of product that meets a certain quality, and so you don't see the same bulk you used to.You see the same thing on other sites like Youtube. Back in the day a guy with a shitty camcorder and horrid mic quality making an unedited video of them talking to a camera in their garage could still garner up a decently sized audience. But these days, you need to have a good setup, good quality recording tools, and a decent amount of editing just to even have a chance at breaking a few thousand subscribers. There doesn't really seem to be an easy solution to it. The only thing I can think of, is people need to just go back to being okay with stuff being pretty amateur, and being the ones to make that amateur stuff themselves. Well written high-quality green is great, but people wont get there if they don't do beginner level work first, and everyone else needs to be willing to accept beginner level work.
>>43443326>Or even believe that a green can kill a threadthis happens to me more often than i'd like to admit>find random thread with decent activity>get green idea from one of the posts>spend about an hour or so writing it in the reply box, rereading it, looking for typos, etc.>thread is still active when I post green>post green>thread immediately freezes>slowly drops down to page 8, 9, 10...>maybe get one polite (You) that says 'nice' or something, just so they can bump the thread>it still dies soon afterI swear that I don't mean for my greens to be a death sentence, i'm just trying to have some fun and get some (You)s
>>43443634activity in a thread can come and go. I see it fluctuate in threads that don't even have greens, like the gaming general (which I sometimes find myself being the one who bumps it)on another note, there's one green which I find to be very enjoyable and I haven't seen anyone mention it yet so here goes:Dash Mom by WingedAnon is a combination between slice of life, adventure, action and isekai (I can hear someone cringing already) where Anon gets to equestria by being reincarnated as Rainbow Dash's son some time before the first episode of FIM. he tries to keep the timeline from being broken, but everything he tries just goes wrong in some way.the writefag did a good job in my opinion combining onion-cutting drama and light hearted / trollish comedy in a way that got me interested in going back and reading the whole thing from the start (I'm normally not interested in greens at all, so that should tell you something). from jokes and memes to fighting for one's life and even an instance of Anon dying and getting revived. and there are a few times when the big secret is almost found out, only to be missed by a hair every time. which is part of the fun and suspense of this green's story IMO.this green is still ongoing in the Anonstallion thread. the chapters that have been written so far can be found here:https://ponepaste.org/11727https://ponepaste.org/11841https://ponepaste.org/11949https://ponepaste.org/12063
>>43443432the only thing I've seen that can get green going and keep it going is, strangely enough, a new general starting, like the Anonstallion one, when that was in its early threads it was brimming with Anon making short greens of ideas and bouncing off each otherabout a dozen green started, two or three are still going to this day I think, a few reached their natural climax, and, as with all generals, we wait as patient sentinels for the other greens to returnI just wish I knew how to better navigate desu cause I'd love to find the thread that kickstarted it all way back when, before it was even entitled Anonstallion
>>43443432I'll have to steal a lot of this for the next OP.>Implying we'll get that far
>>43443634My answer to that is keep writing anyway. For a while /bootleg/ was nothing but bumps, image reposts of bootleg mare merch and Jacky. But it kept going long enough that other anons started writing for it. At most we had around five writers either focusing on their own longer stories or smaller ideas. I went between longer story and shorter. Of course it entered hibernation on NHNB and had been dormant but I think that's largely because the concepts were adequately explored for a lot of writers. One finished his green and didn't feel the need to write anymore.I write because I enjoy it. I think I've kinda crossed the hump of writing into The Void and believing that, at most, maybe three people are reading. Being back here to more seriously write again has felt refreshing. It gives me something to look forward to.
>>43443326The two things that new(er) writers don't do well enough are plot hooks and drama arcs.So you get stories that just kinda start and then interest fizzles out after the intro when there's a low tension lull between action. From there, the writer often over- and/or miscorrects by pumping the tension to max by either going to DBZ power level scaling or having the MC skirt death multiple times, all to hold interest. Which works for a while, but soon leads to exhaustion and "what kind of an asspull will save the MC now" from the audience. Also, almost all new writers start their stories without any kind of a plan about how to end it, so it never ends as they exhaust their pool of ideas before reaching the designated end point.
>>43443859I had a look at my files since I drew a pic for one of the earlier threads, it's dated march 11th 2025. that should give you a date range. But for what it's worth I'm pretty sure current anonstallion thread had that name since the beginning, the idea was like "we have anon, anonfilly, even anonmare, so let's give some love to anonstallion too"
As a p10 bump, I'll shill my stuff here too: https://ponepaste.org/11138 (it's a story index so everything should be on there)I've written a bunch of different stuff, but lately I've been on an extended smut-writing binge. That probably won't end any time soon but hey, at least it's a gay old time. Also good luck with writing your greens OP. If you're still looking for prompts, try "Chrysalis struggles to open a pickle jar"

>>43449807You're in luck! I'm applying for next Mare Fair to host a green panel that consists entirely of a communal green.>But what if people don't know what-They can lurk moar. If you can read enough to get to Mare Fair, you can figure out what a green is. Besides, those explanations are always the most barebones "what is words" shit. My idea is that the retards can worry about how to make something good after they learn how to make something.
>>43449333Start with what makes sense to you. First MF, I made a panel focusing on the psychology and philosophy of a character (singular). My second panel, which I think was marecon or /mlp/con, focused on character (plural) interaction with each other. So we began inward rather than outward.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uqj0orBS0shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYtcqDtoTm4Audio on the first one is shit because they set me up in the public area so I had no dedicated room, no mic, nothing. Just me speaking to anons. Some took notes. Not saying you gotta go through them, I'm sure I did a pretty shit job. But I think those will be the two main things I revisit moving forward outside of my panels where I just tell stories with no pre-planning, no notes, etc.
