These records often sound very 'notched' in the upper midrange, and I suspect it's because those amps sounded harsh and needed a lot of attenuation in post. Hence the lack of crunch you hear.

Whichever way Burns was cutting the mids it gave the guitar a rather congested sound. Compare that to the guitar sound on the Fredman 'trinity' (SotS, Jester Race, Gallery) which has aged a sight better. Fredrik Nordström used that trick where you place two SM57s on the speaker, one at a ~50 degree angle off axis, which uses the phase difference to cancel out a lot of the harshness. Using the two mics like an EQ, without actually needing to EQ.
