>makes one of the best indi rock records of the 90s, follows it up with one of the best indie rock records of the 2000s>is rarely talked about past E&I, never discussed among best indie bands of that era.why does everyone hate d-plan so much? Its not like modest mouse had much more classic material when you think about it
if you don't like Change you are a poser, simple as
>>127566491I recently learn that there's a bonus track on the cassette version of can't we be matureThe whole cassete is really good
This band filters me so hard. It's like they said what if we wrote indie rock songs but made them have no outstanding qualities whatsoever that could provoke any emotional response in the listener. Like eating plain rice. Obviously other people see something that I don't.
>>127566625sad but +2 for honest admission of being filtered because d plan is more rhythmically and songwriting-focused interesting than most other indie bands that have ever existed
>>127566608woah sick.. gotta track down the cassette and listen. is the track on yt?
>>127566577trvke, change is incredible. Ellen and Ben makes me cry
>>127566491E&I is a winter listen for meI was one of the anons out here breading to discuss this record. It's one of my favorite 90's albums. I think the backlash of it stems from Travis solo record which pfork bashed with 0.0 rating, they clowned on him for mall incidentYeah, Change is great but Is Terrified is ace, the energy on that one is ecstatic and nerves on end, whereas E&I is controlled sperg focusJ. Robbins is so tight and comfy with the production, which really helped E&I get to the level it's at
>>127566491Yeah, I'd loved Emergency & I for years but it took a guy giving a really strong recommendation for Change for me to come around to it. It still doesn't do for me what E&I does, but that's probably just due to how ingrained E&I is into certain memories I have. Can't deny that Change isn't full of incredible tracks. Also listened to the Ice of Boston tons late last year.Other bands anyone would recommend in the vein of the Dismemberment Plan? 50-50 for sound and topic/tone---the nervous energy. Meneguar's I Was Born At Night fills a similar place for me, and maybe the Wicked Farleys to some extent too. The Raymond Brake are very different, but a song like Laying Down would fit with what I mean.
>>127567436>Also listened to the Ice of Boston tons late last yearThis. I holed up with a boombox in my bedroom and played this song on for days end late last year
>>127567232mall incident? is that a song or something that travis did
>>127567510He got beat up by some cholo faggots at a mall. On his solo album he addresses this incident with embarrassment saving face
I like this song and haven't heard much else:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjJ45mMlDO0>>127567232>Travis solo record which pfork bashed with 0.0 rating, they clowned on him for mall incidentsounds funnyqrd
>>127567589its honestly a pr decent record, nothing mind blowing but 7/10 stuffpitchfork was just int here "giving 0's to well established artists for clicks" era, they did it with sonic youth, tmbg and the flaming lips.
>>127567589Beat up by some Dominicans at the Gaphttps://youtu.be/fyT7qHp4cTQ?list=PLLWQA99eCfHzjj4Das8lkQBta8cigP8_k
>>127567744song honestly isnt out of line with d-plans normal humor. Travis likes to write songs about weird things that are self deprecating. good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHgJDSb2lHgbasically a song about travis getting the shit beat out of him while boxing
>>127567436So Many Dynamos and Berlin Whale. The former are straight D Plan ripoffs, with maybe a slight inclination more towards melody. They're both great bands.>>127567693This. I honestly like a lot of the travistan songs, hell I relate to the teeth thing (chipped my two front ones). Sure they were better when the plan were playing them on the change tour but they're fine as they came out.
Change is their best record
saw him in 2001. forgot what he said at one point but a heckler called him "sunny boy" . he was very sunny, cleared eyes.
>>127566625It hit me hard when I listened to it as an aimless twenty something, particularly the songs "A Life Of Possibilities" and "A Spider In The Snow". I can't imagine it being as impactful on someone who isn't in that mindframe/period of their life.>The only thing worse than bad memories>Is no memories at all>From the age of 20 to 22 I had five friends>None of whose names I can recall
>>127566625its math rock for sad people
>>127568991he also wrote maybe the best song about being bipolar
>>127569115what song?>>127568991i discovered E&I as an anxious teen who felt like they didnt have a place in the world. The band imprinted on me heavily enough that a d-plan tattoo is the only one i have and the only one i plan on getting. I dont think travis's lyrics "saved my life" but they made me feel seen at a time when i felt invisible
>>127566491imagine how trash indi rock was if this was the best iy had 2 o4
>>127566491Indie crack for musicians. I loved this shit when I was at the height of listening to mathy and shreddy stuff.
>>127566491I am not an emo faggot, simple as.
>>127566491I don't hate them, they're my favourite boyband
>>127567038Yes it is, even in the official D Plan channelIt's called "When have I ever been known to say no", pretty sick. The entire cassette is 10/10
We were to harsh on Uncanney Valley. I learned to cherish that thing. It's a fun ride
>>127572789Agreed. Honestly a really solid record if your willing to let it sit on its own and not try to be E&I 2. Nothing is really good i play it a lot.
one of the better threads ive seen in a while. love to see people being genuine on herelove the dissonance and spazzy energy of early d-plan. ! and terrified are underrated. also love the split they did with juno. e&i and change are classics and praised for good reason. one of the best rhythm sections in rock too. their bass and drum grooves are so fun>>127566625their early stuff is going less for your heart strings, more balls to the wall and meant to make you contort your body. try it out>>127567045one of the better closers ever>>127567232jawbox are fantastic but j. has just as storied of a career as a producer. super impressive catalog>>127567436id recommend q and not u to everyone ITT, especially no kill no beep beep. q and not u were passed the spazzy DC indie punk torch from d-plan imo>>127572789the song where he talks about getting fucked in various DMV suburbs is fun
>>127572774Could you upload it?
>>127578573It shows up if you type "Can we be mature cassette"For just the song you need to type the title and the band name as well "dismemberment plan when have i ever been known to say no"The title track of the cassette is ezclusive to rhis release and pretty damn sweet if you ask me
>>127578620Okay yeah cheers, found it on slsk
>>127567436big ole' bump.>Farleys>Raymond Brakewowee, did not think I'd ever see discussion of these bands here. I don't have any other suggestions for you but it's nice to see someone knows ball.Saw D-Plan in 2011 and was too young to really process much, besides thinking the drummer kicked ass (he still does). Saw them again last year and they seemed a lot tighter. Travis could actually sing. Travis ended with OK, Joke's Over and threw in Chappell Roan and Jesus Lizard adlibs. Lots of fun. >>127567232The liner notes for E&I's vinyl reissue talks more in depth about J. Robbins production, can't recall any specifics off the top of my head though (general vibe being that it was stressful due to the sperg focus)
>>127581447>wowee, did not think I'd ever see discussion of these bands heretheres a small contingent of us on here who love those quirkier, noisier, mathier indie bands. PEE, mars accelerator, heavy vegetable, north of america, etc. new wave dream by the raymond brake is one of the best songs of all time. also gonna shout out cole as another great NC indie / math group
>>127581447Now im even more upset i couldnt go to any of there recent shows. They better tour again soon i need to see d-plan live before i die
>>127582868Did you see North of America is playing shows? I got a big surprise when I came across a listing for them playing a show in a week. Blue Skies Turn Black (former label of Rockets Red Glare) is the one booking it too.
>>127585250oooooh i did notblue skies turn black is still active? sick
