The first few Decemberists albums are what you're looking for, but they're a bit more jaunty and have extra instruments like upright bass and accordion

Yes, I have two, but they are pretty gay. The horse head one and little teeth, thr latter is the better one imo. Still, not really the same though

If you haven't already, try essential indie folk like bright eyes, the antlers, sufjan stevens, elliott smith, the front bottoms, the decemberists, fleet foxes, the mountain goats, etc. i also recommend Kind of Like Spitting, Little Kid, John Galm, and Told Slant. and yeah as another anon pointed out, try literally every other elephant 6 band (namely of montreal and the olivia tremor control) + grandaddy who SHOULD be an elephant 6 band. also try other bands that have neutral milk hotel members like a hawk and a hacksaw and bablicon.
have FUN, op

Chris Knox/Tall Dwarfs. Flying Nun Records, 80s/90s stuff. Different, but I always assumed them to be an influence on NMH.

Listen to Andrew Bird either The Mysterious Production of Eggs or Armchair Apocrypha

But if your into that you should be listening to the 60/70 psych pop bands that it took inspiration from since It was basically a revival with a 90s indie sound to it
