There's nothing "simple" about most of Beethoven's work. His innovations in form and expression were absolutely revolutionary, and the character of his late music is among the most complex in history. The late string quartets are polyphonic and difficult to comprehend even today (the Grosse Fuge sounds like the most metal, unhinged thing ever written). The late piano sonatas are fucking transcendental. Most listeners don't look down on simplicity at all. There's a reason Mozart, Chopin or even Satie are so popular, even though the first two wrote very complex stuff as well.
