The nu-metal era was a wild time for those of us who lived it. Honestly, the whole grunge and post-grunge wave of music really confused our senses and made us think loud/heavy music was just... how music was played.I honestly felt bad for our parents having to listen to angsty white dude music with lyrics literally about killing yourself. Being 12 and singing along loudly to "This state is elevating / As the hurt turns into hating / Anticipating all the FUCKED UP feelings again" on the way to soccer practice is so damn cringe in retrospect. At least the Zoomies parents already lived through it, so they can just laugh when their kids get angsty. But really, it's for pre-teens. Not grown adults.

They were just chads trying to get laid the whole way. It was a weird time. These guys wore football jerseys and yankee hats, and their angry music didn't represent the outcasts - it was basically jock chad music from an angrier era. It wasn't like the cool 'artist' types, in fact even the bands that had great musicianship barely even wanted that narrative. It was more about being cool and popular, ironically.

It's so weird that Deftones have found themselves in this position in 2025. They were never really the cream of the nu-metal crop... Like, I can only handle Korn, SOAD, or Slipknot in small doses, but their best songs are so much more interesting. I guess there's some shoegaze elements to Deftones that the kids like... but why not listen to actual shoegaze?
