He wrote in one of essays (in his review of Gulliver's Travels if I remember) that usually good art in any given age comes from a variety of points of view, and the most of what you can ask of people is that they're not literally insane (probably like G.G. Allin or somehing), capable of having a continuous train of thought, have some talent for their craft, and also believe in what they're saying. It's not about whether the point of view being expressed is necessarily "true" or not, as political ideologies tend to think their ideology is true and everyone else believes in falsehoods. But as a matter of fact, everyone is usually wrong about something important in any given age, although they may be right about other things.I don't think die-hard social and political reactionaries can't make good art. Actually some interesting art can come from discenchantment with, and righteous scorn for, the modern world. I don't share that philosophy in general and don't listen to black metal (usually... frankly I don't know even where to begin with it), but I don't think it's "bad."

"Classical" music proper (more or less the music of the neo-classical 18th century in Europe) is also music for courtiers. It was meant to please wealthy and powerful patrons.
