When learning guitar, is it better to start by learning chords, or by just finding songs you wanna play?
>>
>>127708238
Watch some justin and then pick away at a song you like
>>
>>127708238
90% of songs people like to listen to these days don't contain a single chord that requires more than 3 fingers, chords are for boomer music from the 70s and before but nobody likes those songs
>>
>>127708238
You think songs don't have chords or what? They aren't separate things
>>
>>127706585
Is that a Mexican P Bass?
That looks exactly like mine
>>
>>127708238
it's more fun/rewarding and therefore easier to practice songs you like but to develop real speed and clean technique eventually you are going to have to practice changing between two chords in isolation to a metronome. the metronome does two things: gives you measurable progress and gives you a target or sense of urgency which helps get all of your muscle groups on the same page which leads to speed. you'll need to do a bit of both but focus more on the music because while real practice is beneficial it doesn't always directly translate 1:1 to application. if i practice the major scale for an hour a day for a month i can probably play it at 180 BPM and that will allow me to pick all things faster and probably play a lot of things at 140-160 BPM but it really only made me good at specifically the major scale. i hope that helps you in your journey

>>
>>127707141
you don't have to do anything but my hunch is that as you get more involved in the world of music you will want to know chords and scales and acquire even more theoretical knowledge beyond that, if you were to rephrase your question to be something more like "is not knowing chords and scales holding me back?" then i would say yes absolutely, but you can still have fun just learning to play songs and reading tabs

How long would you have to spend with a new guitar to be really sure if you like or dislike it?Like sure sometimes 10 min in a store is enough but most of the time when you take it home you find more issues like one bad fret somewhere or the string spacing doesn't feel right etc

>>127711189
At this point, I'm sure of every type of guitar I want, and the ideal specs they should have. I've gone through so many that I know what to avoid at least. So all I need to do is find what isn't completely built like shit or damaged.
Couldn't tell you about anything about specific "mojo" though..and not going to lose my mind about a few different ounces in weight. Nor do I give a shit about tonewoods...other than if it looks like shit.
>>
>>127711217
what
>>
>>127711189
>pull sixer off wall
>sight down the neck from both ends and both sides
>look at neck joint, nut, fretboard, etc for qc issues and damage
>look at action
>look at intonation/bridge position/string spacing in relation to pickup pole pieces
>sit down and play it acoustically for a few minutes
>plug in to test electronics/see how it sounds
Maybe 10 minutes tops. Granted like the other anon said, I've played for a long time and have played a ton of different guitars. You just develop a feel for what you like. It's like a good mechanic being able to diagnose issues by feeling vibrations from the drivers seat.
>>
>>127711303
I'd like to think I played enough guitars to know better, but one way or another one or two weird issues always popped up down the line, like on my last bass the bridge sometimes started making buzzing noises from I'm assuming a loose saddle that makes it vibrate against the other saddles
>>
>>127711332
At least those are little things you can fix. Even a bad fret can be fixed pretty easily.
What I avoid is shit I'll never be able to fix. Usually you don't find that on a new guitar. Like a warped neck. Not a technically issue, but I get petty about some visual things. Usually will avoid pau ferro and partially laurel. It's irrational, but I feel repulsed... like holding a turd or a cockroach.
>>
>>127711332
>the bridge sometimes started making buzzing noises from I'm assuming a loose saddle
Things vibrate loose over time and sympathetic vibrations can cause unwanted noise yeah. That's not something that would sour an instrument for me though, it just means I have to spend time going over fasteners and finding which one backed itself off.

the new blue chip pick quality is great but i picked the wrong specs. it's pointed corners at .050", i should've went rounded corners at .060". in its current configuration it is way too bright. i can see why people use these on martins because they have very little treble but on a balanced guitar it's way too harsh. i like the tone from my smaller tpr but like the larger body of the tad for accuracy. guess i have to order a tad3r pick now. damn

You kidding me? It's very Sartre. Very Depesche Mode. If you don't mind me interjecting. Existentialism is a somewhat nebulous occurrence. Thing is, they said it was free jazz. But there ain't no free jazz. Everything has a cost. Ornette Coleman leaned into the "free" jazz. That is a stated fact. Are you refuting this, sir?

Adjusted the truss rod and pickup height on my RG370 today, bit of a learning curve but nowhere near as much as doing the string action and intonation will be tomorrow. Internet seems to be 50/50 on just adjusting these as they are or you needing to block the trem and loosen the strings first or you'll ruin the knife edge. It's either a boomer old wives tale from the 80s or a fact that most Zero Edge trems are just built better these days.
>>
What are your favourite tone tips and tricks?
I like to switch on my amp to standby and warm up the tubes for 10-15 minutes before playing. Really makes it sound good.

TRAIN
Tune, relief, action, intonation, noodle
FF
For intonation, if the fretted note is Flat move the saddle Forward

It's good practice to decouple the knife edge and the vibrato posts before screwing them to change the action. Might as well lube them or grease them while you're at it.

If you've seen an old pliers them grippers do get mangled and smoothed out, and kitchen knives that aren't even hitting metal get dulled.
>>127717991
They do get dull and mangle over time and depending on use - specially the cheaper ones that aren't made of better steel.

>>127717981
It's absurdly obvious that it seems dumb but just placing your combo in front of you at chest or head level makes a lot of difference rather than playing it from behind your knees. You don't have to crank the volume and treble as much.

Playing with a metronome does help, or at least tapping with your feet. When I did the shitty rising force voca the other day I found it useful to have the bpm at 100 and subdivide up from there rather than matching per click at 200+

Please help me fix this bass I'm losing my fucking mind over this

It's a cheap Harley Benton standard series bass I got from my girlfriend years ago. I always liked playing it, but recently when recording I've noticed that any time I make contact with the strings it will "pop", very annoying if you play a lot of open strings.

I've replaced the jack, checked all the soldering, fucked around with a multimeter (seems grounded but drifty for sure), everything seems fine

How can i get this piece of shit to stop popping. Please help, do i just order a shitton of shielding?

>>
>>127719581
Remove both hands, and then touch it again yeah, that's when it pops. Idk if it's normal for bass but my guitars don't do it
>>
>>127717916
String trees on that reverse headstock cause major tuning issues, Super Sonics have real tuning issues and simply not using the string trees fixes it completely. Something about the break angle behind the nut and the wound strings binding up on the trees

Yeah, frontman of the Screaming Trees. The singer of QOTSA (Josh Homme) was his bands’ touring guitarist and they became really tight. He was pals with a ton of people and his book is full of funny stories about them. Layne Staley thinking he’s full of spiders while tripping, Jerry Cantrell stealing porn, Liam Gallagher being a cunt and getting smashed in the face with a P Bass headstock, Josh Homme looking like a cop and ruining drug deals in the hood, J Mascis having giggle fits over a cookie jar shaped like a homeless guy, lots of stuff like that. Lots of cool stories from being on your and being in the studio. Not guitar related but a great read for fans of these kinds of guitar heavy bands

Had I known back then what a trouble it would be I'd get something else. Alas.

Ibanez is kinda boring to me honestly.

y'know what's more boring than playing your instrument? having to fix your instrument

maybe you can sell it to your dentist and buy a revstar or something
>>
>>127720716
damn, sucks that they forced you to buy one i guess
>>
>>127720731
if i say that i don't like you either, are you going to assume that i plowed your whore of a mother 18 years ago?
>>
>>127720717
Hahah that's very true. Just saying though, all the superstars are dull and they don't really have any cool looking shapes.

I've been eyeing a few guitars lately, mostly in the 500 range. Those new schecter pt standards look nice.

here's the two arcane boomer secrets that have given me the most stability.
1. sand a bit of material away from the side where the string enters the nut slot. put a piece of sandpaper in the slot vertically and round off the corner of the slot.
2. wind the g string (and only the g string) so the windings are opposite to normal with the string coming off the top of the tuning peg instead of the bottom.
3. lube your nut. either pencil graphite or a wet lube. relube every string change. I use mercedes silicone sunroof grease I had on hand.

4. is accept that mahogany necks are much less temperature and humidity stable and will go out of tune if your indoor conditions change a lot

Yeah I'll definitely do that. Saw the winding tip on yt earlier actually.

I'm just baffled that a fucking tech who does that shit for a living couldn't do it properly.

Am I going to regret ordering a 10€ replacement (since it is missing) tune-o-matic bridge on aliexpress for an old Japanese lp-style guitar from the 70s that I recently inherited?

I have no previous experience playing t b h
and I don't know how good the guitar is so i don't want to commit
>>
>>127721694
why would boomers give on job training when they could just hire someone with 5 years (of lied about) experience instead????
>>
>>127721763
maybe but probably not
>>
>>127721763
Is there something wrong with the original bridge or are you seriously considering modding it before even learning how to hold a pick?
>>
>>127721803
yeah he said it's gone
>>

Circuits would look about the same if we pulled them up. Most of what we're going to hear differently is the speaker.

yeah it's fucked
