The main problem with Everybody Hurts is that it's just not true at all, some people are complete sociopaths that feel no empathy for others, they would sooner kill someone than ever shed a tear, this website for instance is full of those types.
>>
The main problem with Everybody Hurts is that it’s a gay song with sappy lyrics built around an irritatingly predictable and cliched chord sequence, sticking out like a sore thumb on an otherwise decent album.
>>
Actually the problem with Everybody Hurts is that it's an overly cheesy pop song that drags on and interrupts the flow of the album. Even The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite has those weird kinds of REM lyrics they're famous for, this one's just straightforward as fuck without much going on. The band itself grew to dislike it almost immediately after the album released.

Its a decent Everly Brothers send off. I think Mark prindle made that comparison to them before

You're making it sound like it's bad
But if you stopped and thought about it a bit, you'd realise sociopathy is an adaptation to a cruel society. So they lose empathy because they feel too much and letting all that get to them would destroy their mental
So reflecting all that shit back at society is the right approach, especially since most of them are actually more unfeeling than those "sociopaths"

You sound like some manchild tragic figure like the joker or something. Its all cope and excuses for the fact you're a hateful fucked up mental case

So is REM itself then lol, they've all made comments on Everybody Hurts being one of their worst songs from that era.
>>
REm only has two sounds:
- whiny
- jangly

Europe, Reckoning, Automatic, and Monster
are great solid albums.

Recently had a realization with Monster. My favorite album is Europe but there's a strong case for Monster.

Bruh c’mon now.

Haven't gotten there yet. I literally just got into REM last year. Monster was the 1st album I heard. What's the Frequency Kenneth was the 1st song I heard by them, I always dismissed them based on what OP said >>127711866
That and Losing My Religion, I'm getting back into them based on what Kurt said that Michael would've been the producer of Nirvana's next album.
>>
Green is my favourite R.E.M. album
>>
When the narrator of that song says, 'Now it's time to sing along' and the next verse starts in a little too quickly, that's him telling you that he's being facetious.
>>
Nightswimming is the only song that has made me cry the first time I heard it.

Yeah but nah actually the opposite is true, don't let this cunning disguise fool you so easily my young Padawan *unzips dick*
Although us big tough 4channers carefully shield ourselves behind several thousand layers of irony it's only because we're actually terribly fragile schizoid souls who prefer to come here for our meager dose of human interaction because it allows us some small measure of control over the way our brains unexpectedly warp our emotional reactions to stuff and if worse comes to worse and we have a full on panic attack nuclear meltdown the worst thing that happens is we type some seething butthurt replies in caps lock but at least no one can physically see the tears whereas when dealing with other human beings IRL face to face there's always that ticking time bomb potential for anything and everything to go so, so horribly wrong at any moment and suddenly everyone is staring at you and you feel very warm all of a sudden because you just shit your pants and everyone is mesmerised by the small waterfall of liquid shit pouring down your leg into your sock and all over the floor and there'll be absolutely nowhere to hide from this life-defining event forever from now on and your brain will have yet another excuse to bury you underneath oceans of fresh trauma that we'll simply add to our ever-expanding collections of crippling mental baggage that are guaranteed to haunt us for the rest of our days and yeah so I kind of stopped listening to myself there then forgot what I was talking about because I just tune out when I get bored, oh right REM, so yeah they really are kind of boring, but anyway how about that REM they're definitely a band amirite

PROTIP: Collapse Into Now is their best album or maybe it's not I don't remember it just has UBerlin on it and that one song is so good it makes the whole album seem amazing

Nightswimming makes me cry EVERY time I hear it pretty much

yeah but it's not like years ago

Problem with it is it sounds like bland 90s AC.

The song was about suicide and a song for suicidal folk. Essentially turn that frown upside down :)

REM were ahead of their time, they rightly earn the title of forefather of all lame Millenial indieslop. Whether that's a good or bad thing I'll leave to you to decide.

if most rock in the 80s-ish era was about BDSM well that's understandable, it was an era of high crime, serial killers, the AIDS epidemic, and urban decay. perhaps to some REM's escapism was a relief from the real world.
>>
>>127719500
REM made some really raw emotional songs that even for the time feel unusually sincere. For me it's

And you sound like every other internet armchair psychologist who believes themselves to be way smarter than they actually are
>>
>>127719833
long and short is they took the format and watered it down into something pathetically formulaic
>>
>>127719776
Interesting seeing an article from 1996 say that Out of Time feels the closest to their earlier output, when nowadays I see most people say that it's Automatic that's like an evolution of those years.
>>
The original title was Everybody Farts but the record company forced them to change it.

did they kind of fall off after this album? I don't remember them having any more hits after everybody hurts
