>listen to September Gurls
>Holy shit, this is the greatest pop song ever written
>hear that basically every alternative musician praises this band and Alex Chilton
>get pumped to dive into their discography
>listen to their first album
>it's generic boring 70s dad rock
>hmmm ok, maybe the 2nd album they find their sound
>it's also generic boring 70s dad rock (aside from the aforementioned song)

Big Star is unquestionably the most overrated band I've ever heard. They managed to shit out a fluke masterpiece song, and my god is that a perfect song, but the rest does absolutely nothing for me.

the other songs are better

I just listened to them and can confirm this is blatantly not true.

Way Out West is beautiful. Give it another listen. I do think that their debut is incredibly frontloaded and overrated. I've probably only heard Third/Sister Lovers once and it left very little impression on me. I should listen to it again, it's been a long time. Check out Chris Bell's solo stuff.

Honestly, go fuck yourself. September Gurls isn't even their best song
>didn't even listen to Third
Yeah, fuck off.

Gotta say they're far from generic 70s rock. #1 Record is a little more dad-rocky but that's mostly Chris Bell's doing (he could be like that when he stopped doing sensitive songs). Radio City on is their best stuff.
If you want more September Gurls type sound, you should probably check out Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub or maybe Songs From Northern Britain. The Ed Stasium mix of The Replacement's Tim also has some songs with that same energy.

Third's great. O Dana, Kizza Me, Jesus Christ, Thank You Friends. All fantastic. Shit, it's even got Steve Cropper playing on the cover of Femme Fatale that they do. Well worth a re-listen. Try Complete third if you haven't as it compiles those sessions the best and gives something closer to the intended track listing of the record.

The power poppers of /mu/ know that if you want a good power pop thread you need a good bait.

I wish they did a compilation of Alex Chilton written solo material
