I really wish Matty Healy overdosed after this album. It's aged remarkably well in contrast to everything that's come after and unlike those records has a cohesive, enveloping sound and vision that never tries to shoulder the weight of the world or try too hard to be varied or even cool. It has zero qualms about being a gorgeous new wave record with a sad, bitter, pervy, and often dark and satirical undercurrent, and we like that.
It's their only classic record that has stood the test of time as a result.

I still like their newer alba, although nothing really captures the pre-fame personality of their early EPs. bloody Harry Styles ruined them.

What I find so bizarre about Healy is the trajectory he took after his 2017 overdose/rehab scare. Instead of refining that sound and those themes, going in a darker direction thematically while naturally progressing into a more shoegaze/dream pop/ethereal wave sound, he just went on making rambling, incoherent albums that occasionally sprinkled in their classic sound/themes but mostly focused on whinging about the very generic shitlib political topics and PoVs the guy himself mocked and parodied earlier in his career.
His whole thing was that he was a neurotic, disassociated, horny, Anglo elite with a drug habit who made disarmingly pretty music about that. It's why my personal favorite song of theirs is Medicine, it's quite literally their Heroin:
