>95 percent of it sounds the sameSAD!
>95 percent of it sounds the samebecause it's under the same genreif it sounds different from math rock than it isn't math rock
I only like don cab
>>127734128I don't think that's the definitionyou described experimental rock
>You’re not making math any better you’re just making rock music worse
>>127734128Because in the process of breaking away, they created a whole bunch of rules that the genre must conform to.
>>127734128Sounds like what happened to prog although I'd say prog has a lot more variety than math rock.
>>127734928Is there any discernible difference between math rock and progressive rock?
>>127734984Apart from the era each genre was popular, I'd say prog employs less dissonance, has more variety in instrumentation, songs are generally longer and it has a lot more influences from non-rock music. This is the reason why for example it was common in a lot of prog songs to have sections in 6/8, there was a heavy influence from traditional English jigs. This is a generalisation of course and it's clear that math rock is very influenced by prog so math rock songs may have some of the features I mentioned above.
mathrock is just theory wanking + gimmicksevery so often you'll find the rare track that may sound jazzy but they're rare
Was listening to Lync today. Not really math but they are pretty emo and sound like some math bands whilst being generally conventional in song structure
>>127734128I love most Asian math rock like Elephant Gym and Tricot and some European stuff like Totorro. With the exception of Don, I can't stand American math rock. 90% of US bands just sound like American Football copycats.
>>127735287>. 90% of US bands just sound like American Football copycats.i think this is the issue. why the FUCK does every band insist on copying that sound? more bands like don and hella should be around, or at least more bands should've been bullied to at least using a distortion pedal at most
>>127734984Math rock's technical and influenced by prog rock but it's not progressive. There's progressive math rock out there but the genre isn't necessarily progressive.Prog rock generally features longer tracks that are expansive, cohesive and concept-driven.Math rock's more riff-based and concise, often abruptly jumping to radically different riffs and sections.Prog rock tends to be more eclectic with its influences and genres incorporated into the music, often strays into jazz, folk and neo-classical territory as well as a few other genres. Prog tends to use a wide and diverse ensemble of backing instruments.Math rock generally is contained to the realm of alternative rock and post-punk and doesn't frequently dip into non-rock genres of music. The instruments played are your usual drum kit, bass guitar and regular guitar.
>>127734128Rock if it was good+American Football isn't real mathrock
For me it's Sajjanuhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0m4q02iNpo
>Listens to Don Cab>Sad>Listens to American Football>Sad>Listens to Slint>Sad>Hence all math rock must be sadAnon there is more to a genre then the 3 songs you have listened to
The only band I've heard doing it right is Don Cab. Slint is ok too, but I think Don Cab is more honest to the genre. What are some other good math rock bands?

>>127735287>>127734128>American Football copycats. If you listen to the soft kind of mathrock then it's your fault
