is it actualy as bad as people say?

What makes it worse than other van halen records?

>is it actualy as bad as people say?
Yes.
>What makes it worse than other van halen records?
I don't know. I haven't listened to it.
>>
>>127765514
>is it actualy as bad as people say?
it's bad but it's not the worst thing ever
>What makes it worse than other van halen records?
eddie was incredibly high and drunk on drugs and power so he sought to make the record himself. he's literally playing every instrument on this album while cherone does a bad hagar impression. there's some ok moments
the album also marks the first time eddie used a DAW so he was literally just cutting and pasting parts together so everything is a fucking mess
>>
>>127765514
It has How Many Say I which is total garbage, other than that it has awful production and it's way too long
>>
>>127765514
the tour was pretty cool and the songs have some good live versions but the album was all but unlistenable
>>
>>127765532
epic XD
>>
>>127765538
>How Many Say I
It didn't seem like total garbage. I think Gary Cherone should have sung on it as well.

For comparison, more than words by extreme had both the guitarist and gary singing on it.

For the record, I'm not super into van halen. I've only listened to some of their stuff.
People said its boring, but I got bored listening to some of the love songs off 5150 and balance*. I think there were good songs on III,

It's definitely weirder and less typical than other albums. Maybe you could almost call it prog at some points?
*Not saying van halen has no good romance songs. E.G aint talking bout love, Pound Cake, etc. Just saying some of them bored me.
>>
>>127765514
I haven't listened to it in literal decades but I remember I liked it better than anything with Sammy Haggar, I just don't like that era
>>
PIZZA MAN YEAH HE WANT A SLICE
>>
>>127765621
I feel like gary was involve on the lyrics for that one.

that songs funny. some examples:
>Mailman, looking more like your daughter

>Gay man, looking for another
>>
>>127765610
Have you listened to 7th seal or Poundcake?
>>
>>127765514
There are a few moments where Van Cherone comes close to working, but for every one of those there are five more moments that are mind-bogglingly cringe.
>>
>>127765514
this album proved that Eddie was not the main creative force in Van Halen, nor should he be
>>
>>127765648
is it cringier than extremes first album?
>>
Songs under 2 minutes are a melody/medley. Songs 2-3 minutes are a tune. Songs 3-7 minutes are a song. Songs over 7 minutes are self-indulgent wank.

>>127765666
eddie fuckin van halen sings a piano ballads worse than any 80s hair band to close it out so yes
>>
>>127765514
its not great. Def the worst VH album. A few decent tracks but the songwriting wasnt there, the lyrics werent there, Ed cant sing (but props for trying), the production wasnt there...still some decent playing by EVH and its always nice to hear mike sing background

>>127766183
hey that's pretty good
>>
>>127765514
There's a lot to hate about this album but Gary Cherone isn't one of them. He got a bad end of the deal.
>>
its okay, its just surprising to people the difference in just about every metric compared to their other recordings and era's.
the ones I sometimes listen to:
without you
fire in the hole
josephina
year to the day (the best track)
from afar
once (second best track)
primary

Van Halen 3 [Warner Bros., 1998] Dud
>>
>>127766183
yeah that was good track
>>
>>127766369

Primary is the intro to "Bullet or the Ballot"

Like how Neworld is the intro to Without you. If you pay attention you'll hear the vocal melody of the chorus in without you being used on part of neworld.
>>
>>127766371
he hated black sabbath. is his taste relevant/?
>>
>>127766369
>from afar
that ones got some strange percussion on it, kinda like the beatles come together (or maybe god only knows)
>>
>>127766771
yeah. although i'm not sure if i dig how the floor tom sounds on that one.
eddie handled the drumming on VH3, he's not terrible. he's not alex (incredibly noticeable), but his drumming on without you is pretty solid for someone who's main instrument wasn't the drums
>>
Did people dislike the album because its experimental (for van halen)?
>>
>>127765571
>It didn't seem like total garbage. I think Gary Cherone should have sung on it as well.
nevermind I checked it out again, and he's also also singing on there.

Dirty Water Dog is alright albeit it's just an inferior rewrite of a 5150 outtake that Ed already did better with Steve Lukather a decade before VH3

yeah and because everyone was fucked off with the drama surrounding the whole dave coming back for 3 seconds shit
>>
I love eddie's solo on a year to the day
>>
>>127767234
interesting, i'll go listen to other 2 tracks. how did you find out about dirty water dog being related to those 2?
>>
do some of the tracks on teh album have a kinda prog vibe to them?
>>
>overall a DECENT VH album
>Eddie was waaaaayyyy too coked out (even moreso than any of the 80s albums)
>Gary was a great vocalist
>some of Michael Anthony's best basswork
>SHIT production
could have easily been saved if they brought in Ezrin or Mutt (or even fuckin BEATO for that matter).
>>
>>127767234
I have that lukather solo debut on cd - its not bad - "fall into velvet" is great, "twist the knife" is decent and so is "darkest night of the year"
>>
>>127767332
is beato a meme?
>>
>>127767346
yes, but also no. his mixes back in the early 00s were very good for the genre.

With Wholesome Gary Chungus on vocals and Eddie Van Chungus on everything else this is probably Chungus Halen at peak performance
>>

Without You is a great song. Just mixed like shit.

filtered, his voice on that track is like something you would hear from tom waits and yet tom waits gets his dick and balls gargled to death on this site

yeah his voice is fine for that kinda song, gary is also in it too.

The producer Mike Post revelation about Al drinking again and not playing drums on III is a bummer but kind of makes sense now in context of the whole story. It was a weird time for the band, kind of directionless and with no vocalist and close to hiring Mitch Malloy, which wouldn't have worked.

Humans Being, Me Wise Magic, Cant Get That Stuff were really great tunes and showed promise. III was wholly on Ed and shows how much he struggled with insecurity, indecision and mistrust. So much so, that when the album panned he was gutted and never really wrote any new music or had any forward momentum ever again.

Truly a one of a kind sensitive soul caught in the spotlight and obstinate enough to not want to play the game. All he wanted to do was play music.

I hope Al releases some of his archived music.
