Thoughts? I feel like it's really solid instrumentally but Moreno sounds kinda lost and like he's just rambling into the mic sometimes. He doesn't seem to know how to handle the instrumental time changes.

Overall I rate it far above Gore but not quite up to par with Ohms. And of course, all of these albums are actually somewhat mediocre compared to their classic discography. They have been experimenting with their sound ever since Koi no Uokan but it's not always to their advantage.

Seeing them tonight in an arena, hoping they play a greatest hits oriented set to be honest. I paid a lot for the seat and it's probably the only chance I'll ever have to see them as a midwestener. I hate arena shows but that's where they chose to play

Souvenir did not need that space exploration sci fi synth solo at the end

Who is the vocalist on the opening of Departing The Body? That guitar intro wasn't very good

Riffless garbage

You don't like the djent chugging? Honestly it does get repetitive after a while

New ideas, some good, some bad. Old patterns/sounds, clumsily altered, or too thoroughly mined to go where they’d be suited best.

The best we could hope for the Deftones at this point. Spaghetti, optimistically thrown against the wall that yields a couple bangers and a mediocre overall project that is trying (but failing) to not to be too paint by numbers. They’re gonna need outside help if they wanna be fresh.
>>
>>127772785
Completely agree, you worded it well. Personally I think they should just stay out of the studio for a good while and just play their catalog. Return to the studio when you actually have something fresh put together, not some rushed slop to stay "relevant". They don't need to stay "relevant", they are a classif alternative metal band at this point. Are they hurting for money or something?
>>
It's sad when bands don't know when to stop and turn into slop machines. I watched it happen to Chance the Rapper, Gorillaz, Fall Out Boy, plenty of artists. I hope Deftones doesn't join that list. Say what you will about SOAD or RATM or MCR, they are good examples of bands that stopped going to the studio when they ran out of ideas and successfully coast on classic songs

The first half of the album is definitely the tightest sounding and most well written. After that they venture off i to atmospheric noise but it's cheap. It doesn't sound passionate
>>
>>127772522
>thinks Ohms, their most formulaic throwaway album, is better
>>
>>127773642
Gore is the most formula icon throwaway. Ohms isn't amazing but it's more consistently well written than Private Music

>formula icon
*formulaic
That's what I get for phoneposting
>>
>>127773654
>>127773661
What's formulaic about Pittura Infamante? Phantom Bride? You don't like the album, but Gore took way more risks and was more unique than Ohms.
>>
>>127773685
Every song on Gore sounded like an attempt to get on the radio to me. What songs from it took risks in your opinion?
>>
>>127772522
They always play greatest hits sets.
>>
>>127773727
Complete opposite. That's the case with Ohms, which is part of why it was so formulaic. How would Gore, with the tinny ass production and lack of hooks, be designed for radio play? Makes zero sense.
As far as risks, I already named two. The risks, in this case, are deviating from their established formula, not necessarily being experimental. Ohms didn't deviate whatsoever, which is why it's so formulaic, unlike Gore.
>>
>>127773789
It's my first and probably last time seeing them so for once I'll be happy about that. A mix of greatest hits with new songs mildly sprinkled would be great.

I don't know why every touring artist avoids Kansas City. No one fucking comes here and when they do they play this shitty sounding arena, it's grimy and the acoustics are terrible
>>
>>127773801
I respectfully disagree but I'll revisit those two songs. I dismissed Gore pretty quickly so maybe there's some goodness that I've missed
>>
>>127773801
THE SKY... THE SKY... THE SKYYYYY
Dude Pittura Infamante is terrible meandering trash. I don't even feel like listening to another Gore song, it just sounds so soulless and pointless
>>
>>127774151
I respectfully disagree, but it can't be denied that it doesn't sound like other Deftones songs or albums. It doesn't fit the formula, while Ohms is all rote, formulaic garbage.
>>
>>127774195
Nu-Deftones just has problems anyway you look at it, I think we could agree on that
>>
>>127772522
Infinite Source is one of their best songs.
>>
>>127774261
It's good but idk about top tier imo. None of the tracks on this album really stand out after the first listen, especially after the first half.
>>
Why did tiktok kids decide that this band of C-tier contemporary popularity would be the one they'd revive?
>>
>>127775160
Tf are you talking about. Deftones have been going strong from day 1 all on their own. They're just all aging is all
>>
>>127774279
im obsessed with I think about you all the time. I dont know why this one is getting slept on. a deftones power ballad is a good thing.

I stopped ranking deftones albums for the most part. they all different vibes that I appreciate. I reach for white pony and Ohms the most, but they all get rotated except for adrenaline. it's fine but not what I fell in love with deftones for.

I do think PM is up to par for what I would consider "acceptable", in addition to having some of the best album art ive ever seen.

>>127774261
infinite source is a really good song, the fleshwater influence is notable

I agree with pretty much all of your post except this. It's just a snake right? Or did the physical copy come with mire elaborate art?

Imo his vocals are the best thing in the record, alongside the compositions, obviously. I think the mastering is bad but that's fixable with a remaster.

>>127772522
I actually loved Moreno's performance on this. Sounds like he was trying something new and it worked well for me.
>>
>>127772522
I put it right in the middle of the discography. It reminds me a lot of the last Linkin Park album, it feels like a solid grab bag of pretty much every idea the band has explored to date. It's almost retrospective in a way. That said, I'm one of the weirdos that loved Gore for being different and doesn't care much for Ohms' retreat into familiarity, and against these two I feel like it's basically a much better Ohms but still safer than Gore. Ecdysis in particular feels like the song they were trying to get at on Ohms in general. But anyways, I'd give it like a high 7, maybe even a low 8. Favorite songs are Infinite Source, cXz, Souvenir, Cut Hands and Metal Dream.

I enjoy the album. It’s not on the level of Koi No Yokan, but it’s a solid release. There are worse albums out there, that’s for goddamn sure.
