People will shit on black midi and then praise king crimson even though a significant amount of the time they sound very similar
>>
>>127782137
Funny, because according to Greep the founder of Rough Trade told black midi that they were the closest thing in spirit to the original lineup King Crimson he had ever seen.
>>
>>127782137
Steven Wilson's Raven feels like a genuine love letter to the 70s style of prog and shows surprisingly lot of emotion even though people accuse his music of being sterile, the excellent musicianship by guests also carries the album

Black Midi music is also well performed and sounds like something KC would make but it doesn't sound genuine, as it clearly comes from people who have more shallow knowledge of prog music

Why was one album panned or ignored by Fantano type hipsters while they praised the other? It's like prog for people who don't like prog
>>
>>127781891
Marillion was the first full-on butt prog band after Rush invented the genre.
>>127782266
70s prog bands didn't know anything about prog as a genre either so that isn't really relevant to the music's quality.

>>
>>127782348
So you think black midi and Greep had no knowledge of any experimental music at all? Seems unlikely given their output is so clearly influenced by jazz, post-punk and various prog subgenres.

Whichever anon recommended Fates Warning, big thanks. I actually just started at the front of their discography last night because the first album had a cool cover and people in the reviews were saying they're basically an Iron Maiden tribute band at first which sounded sweet. I'm on Disconnected now and really liked everything by them so far. Perfect Symmetry has been my favorite, closely followed by Parallels.

>>
>>127790449
If you liked Journey To The Center of The Earth you should probably check out Yes and maybe some other of the more symphonic bands like Genesis or Camel. Prog isn't going to necessarily be for everyone but like jazz it's a very broad genre, and I truly believe everyone can find something from it they like.
I'm curious what you liked about The Wall, given you didn't like DSOTM, since the latter is probably the most accessible Pink Floyd album(though personally The Wall is my favorite).
If you like the more narrative albums, you might also like Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of The Worlds.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Also, old school dub is very progressive in a way because of the production techniques and things they were experimenting with.

Return to Ommadawn may be the greatest achievement in all of music. If it was released back in the 70s? Okay, whatever. It's a flawless album. Plenty of those were released in the 70s by artists within the first decade of their existence. But to do it 44 years after his debut and 27 years after his last great album is insane.

Pinkos are the stupidest people alive. Communism is bad for music because it creates poverty and requires top-down control of all cultural output in order to maintain power. How would you even record and distribute an album in a communist economy, other than for state propaganda? It makes no sense. The extent to which any good music exists in a communist society is the extent to which they have managed to incorporate liberal (ie capitalist) ideas into their system.
>>

every country that has had a communist revolution greatly increased their social index
have you seen the situation in Haiti?

hell, you don't even have to go to the "third world"... look at the homelessness crisis in the USA or western Europe
the flourishing welfare state of the West in the previous century only ever existed to stand up to the Soviet Union and communist discourse
now that it's gone, we're experiencing the capitalist inequity and social decay that are inevitable in a capitalist society

>every country that has had a communist revolution greatly increased their social index
Industrialization increased those countries' social index. Communism in China and Eastern Europe led to mass starvation and some of the most socially oppressive governments that ever existed, until the cold war ended and they reintegrated into the liberal global economy. You have no clue what you're talking about. The poorest Americans (aside from mentally ill who should be incarcerated in asylums) are fat and drive big cars home to their giant TV sets. Capitalism and free global trade have done more to increase the average quality of life than the rest of human invention or government action ever will. If that's reversing course at all (it's not actually) it is because of the growth of the government regulation and spending, not reducing welfare.

Also, Haiti Somalia and Burundi are poor because if their low IQ black population and for no other reason. However, 150 years ago those people were living in grass huts and eating insects so even their lives have had a dramatic wealth increase thanks to global trade.

I am very familiar with 6 albums from both and pretty familiar with 3 more VDGG albums. VDGG edges out solo but not by much. If I could never listen to solo again, Gog, (In The) Black Room / The Tower, and A Louse Is Not A Home would really be the only songs I would be sad about not hearing again.

i want to discuss Classical but the /classical/ general here is awful, i'll just stay here and talk about King Crimson & Magma.

so King Crimson has a new album coming out or something, does this mean there is a possibility of them touring again, or is it stuff they've already recorded a while back?

Not really. They said they've been recording for a while but they aren't committing to making another album. It's a "We're just messing around to see where it goes, don't hold your breath" situation.
