okie guys SOPHIE nerd inspired me i'll go back to my roots and make unlistenable IDEM today (for you)
For the two anons who replied to my post on the last thread. I used a Vital synth and searched up a tutorial on synth stabs primarily dub techno synth stabs and then modified all the effects to sound more to my liking. I will be listening to that Rhythm & Sound album because most of the dub techno I've listened to is Monolake and Andy Stott than Basic Channel. Also for the drums I really just kinda place them in whatever I find interesting and for some reason (too much IDM listening) my drums are always really busy, I know a more simple and basic beat (especially for Dub Techno) is more applicable but I always have that naggy voice in the back of my head saying they're boring. Most of the samples I use are 909 and 808 drum samples with hi hats from a random pack I found so I don't really have anything I've designed myself to use. I started doing this about a month or so ago so all I have is a free DAW (Lmms) and free samples I've scalped across the internet. Here's another track I've made. https://vocaroo.com/1pDJubpGAb1D

>>127786753hope you don't take this the wrong way but i had a go at making your tune sound a bit more dub techno-ey. kept the drum pattern but filtered it to be more dubby, added a big delayed skank on the 2 and 4 and slowed it right down to 120. also added a dub bassline which is a pretty much a requirement for this genre.https://vocaroo.com/1e1e6Zb2MlUD

>>127786829nah you can use cubase with pc
>>127787246Not that anon but that noise/hiss is obnoxiously loud. Otherwise dug the general vibe.Is dub techno even a genre you can define?I've liked ska/reggae/dub for most of my life and played in bands for each, but never found dub techno to have a cohesive sound. Every playlist or recommendations seems to mean something different to everyone. Sometimes it's more minimal/tech house sounding and sometimes more industrial. I guess in my head downtempo is a lot closer to being dub than techno since it leaves room for all the instruments. Only overarching themes are tape echos and minor chord stabsClosest I've found was stuff like this where periodically you hear elements like rimshot with delay or guitar samples, some of it just sounds like bad "remixes" of overly filtered reggae.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPAhos-VZAo
i've put a heavier gauge on the jazzmaster and have been experimenting with some sounds. the tone is definitely darker but im now getting a lot more resonance with the tuning im playing in.

>>127786753It sounds like some instruments in your drums sound louder than they should be, like the two snares that you have going on or the open hat. When balancing out how loud certain instruments should be, it's good beginner advice to have your most important instrument (usually the kick in EDM music) peak at -6Db, and then space out how loud your other instruments are by increments of around 6Db. I made a quick recreation of your drums, but I made the kick peak at -6Db, had the snares peak around -9.9 to -12Db, and had the hats peak around -16Db. This isn't a hard and fast rule you should always follow, but it's an easy way to start balancing instrument volumes when you're not sure how to start.https://vocaroo.com/1kBJql2EiW0r

>>127787598Yeah, even though the genre is pretty stereotypical, it's a rather broad spectrum from which people have their favorite zones. For me it's a question of mood: cold but lively, repetitive but interesting, sparse but efficient, kind of melancholic but not sad. There are very few albums I really dig and most of them are from the Insectorama netlabel. I hate Markus Masuhr, though.

>>127800862The camo, goldtop, chiquita, and esp tele look completely wrong.
>>127801008not the opinion or answer im after but i appreciate it nonetheless
>>127801055I looked at it again, I got some of the numbers messed up in my head. I also didn't realize he was doing a drone string on the top. Reanalyzing, the chiquita and tele are in drop C. D standard with 11s is what I have a guitar tuned it and it's fine with a setup, no special hardware. The low C would be something I'd want to gauge up, idk how he's playing with a lighter one or if that's actually the case. With the camo, the G and C strings look like the wrong gauge number, and then the gold top actually seems like just a pair of 9s and the tuning is E standard so it's actually fine. You shouldn't need any special hardware but remember he has so many guitars and a tech changing them probably after every song or two. The only thing that looks weird is trying to play Drop C with 10s. I can't play in D with 10s for any guitar I have without the tuning going out in a minute.
>>127801055Last bit to note, the Kiesel's being multiscale and the bridge does probably help a lot which you can notice how far back he goes. You'd probably want both to be able to play such light strings like that since the tension can be more appropriate. So yeah, it's a bit of hardware probably
>>127801194>>127801317Thanks anon. Ive been trying to set up my guitar for low tunings and went with 12s thinking it would give me the necessary tension but I find the tone way too dark so im glad I can go back to a lighter gauge if it means I can make other adjustments on the guitar
>>127801600i was that annoying kid who would bang out beats every fucking class until the class baddie asked me to please stop and i didn’t realize it was annoying so i stopped forever after that :(
>>127801643>I find the tone way too darkI don't think the tone should get that much darker. You should lower the pickup height because the strings will be more powerful under more tension. It's probably way too boomy on the low strings like the 6th string, so lower the pickup height especially on the bass side of the strings to get back some of the brightness. Whenever you change strings/tunings drastically, you should adjust the pickup heights to balance out the tone and possibly adjust the bridge/neck volumes.>so im glad I can go back to a lighter gauge if it means I can make other adjustments on the guitarThat depends on the guitar. You probably can't add a bridge that will let you adjust the intonation that far, and you can't magically make your guitar multiscale/fanned frets.

>>127825728I think Luxeverb, Harmor, and Transistor are worth it. Transient Shaper and Pitch Shifter in the box sweeten it up a little, also Kepler Exo and whatever else they'll add. All the third party TB303 plugins cover a good chunk of the delta between Signature and All plugins on sale and the sequencer is pretty decent on it, I have another third party Juno I like but Exo is pretty good.I would recommend Signature for the first year and then upgrade to all plugins the next year if they're interested in a few of those plugins.

at what point (as a beginner) should i invest in a midi? i see like arturia minilab3 on amazon relatively cheap (i pirate everything else so costs of DAWs and plugins dont matter at all). that doesnt seem like a huge cost in case i get bored or it breaks or whatever the fuck?
>>127828246don't bother with anything less than a 49keyyou can get a very basic 49key for $100 USDi'd get one straight away, and then not buy any other gear for 5 years - midi keyboards are the only thing you really need early on
>>127828265hmm, almost twice as expensive. also im mostly interested in digi/hyperpop, at least at first. is the small one not enough? i can see the benefits of the 49 keys one but thats a lot of deskspace
>>127828293If you don't know how to play piano, a MIDI keyboard will be no more useful than mapping your current keyboard to MIDI, which most DAWs support.2 octaves is overly restrictive, if you need more space you could get something like a Korg Microkey that's small enough to just play on your lap. Alternatively you could look into something like a launchpad.

>>127830773Fucking hell, this is a mess. I can hear something nice in the ideas there, but the execution is awful. Your timings are all fucked, so fixing that would be a good start. Maybe try playing to a metronome next time. I like the jangly reverb guitar part, the sound fits nicely. The muted guitar could use some work, though (both timing and playing need tightening along with a different tone possibly). Reason 13 itself is a bad release, and Reason overall has been stagnating since 2010. It you want it for the sounds, it might be worth it.
