Is getting into the habit of using a light pick to strum as a beginner a bad habit?
I have been using my medium pick to strum before I switched but I haven't been hitting every down and up strum (mostly up strums) with it - though it has gotten a little easier.
>>
>>127797413
doesn't matter. i strum with a 1.5mm pick. you get used to it. you should choose your pick based on the tone you want
>>
if i take magic mushrooms, will music finally make sense?
>>
>>127797469
No, you'll stare at your fretboard for 6 hours, think you unlocked the secrets of the Cosmos, then forget it all when you wake up.
>>
>>127797413
at first i used very light picks to strum, now i use very heavy ones. i also like to hit the strings with my fingernail(s), the pick just follows along

Yeah but it’s mostly for motion. Amanita muscaria is good for this but you only get 5 minutes until you drift into a disorienting experience and thoughts loops and thought loops and…

I learned sweep picking on meth I found in Olympia. I spent 12 straight hours doing a simple pattern and boom it finally made sense. The shadow people also agreed, but true solitude and a spiritual focus are needed. It is hard on your body but you can level up.
>not recommended

I have plans to go see a concert but I also kind of want to play music instead of seeing it. It's a rap concert so I know it'll probably be subpar experience on shrooms. Live band music is what this shit was made for but could be fun to trip and play for a few hours instead.
>>
>>127797832
You don't want to be at a rap concert on shrooms friend. High probability of having a real bad night.
>>
>>127797832
Shrooms can be overwhelming. SWIM said that when you have unlimited access to it, you’re more likely to reduce its effects (ie. microdose).

It’s an effective tool for music analysis. I’d learn about Bartok split thirds while my gf played the Romanian dance on piano tripping towards Super Mario in the Sky. Record your reactions or jams. Also realize that you may just want to lie in a warm blanket until you’re no longer having chaotic hallucinations

They make good guitars and stick with only what they're good at. And leave alone and don't get distracted with what they're not good at.
If you think people who've been making the same thing for 100+ years (something they invented no less), and do nothing else, then you're not being realistic. This would be true even if it was just one company cranking out the guns or boot designs over and over again.
>>
>>127799401
It's usually a natural progression for people. Using a lighter pick allows you to get your arm, wrist, hand, etc. in "the flow" without getting hung up on or breaking strings. Over time you'll develop a lighter touch and be able to use a heavier pick.
>>
>>127799437

It's just the intro, but I already have some like diminished open chords in mind to go over the top of it. Could end up being the verse, definitely needs to be followed up with a heavy distorted part. Just wondering if you think it's catchy enough to put the effort into writing a whole song around it.

Boogie amps aren't that expensive on the used market at all and they're worth what you pay for them. They're probably the best amp you can buy without delving into modified or botique.
>>
Here's another pic happy now?
>>
>>127799497
it is but if you're using it as a motif i would do more than 2-3 variations of the B part over the whole song. if it changes all the time it wont feel very stable in my opinion.

Do you mean wouldn't do more than 2-3 variations? I didn't intend to have any variations to begin with, it's just a rough demo. I'd like to hammer it down into a single main part with maybe a variation every other bar.
>>
What kinda name is Boogie anyway? This aint the disco gramps.
>>
>>127799552
Yes that is exactly what i meant, sorry for the auto correct
>>
>>127799558
Mesa is the company name. Boogie is the specific brand for the Mark amps and some others. It came from Carlos Santana, who thought the first amp the guy made "boogied".
>>
>>127799551
>mesa mark series
>student-level
Lmao
>>
>>127799552
not every other bar but every other repetition of the the riff if you know what I mean, or maybe every 3rd or 4th time you repeat it just to keep it from getting stale. Like maybe one time on the tail end hit the open droning g riff a quarter note before you're expecting it.
>>
>>127799594
yeah play around with it. if there's other stuff going on in the song only changing it like once every verse is sometimes enough. think of papa was a rolling stone that bass line doesn't change a single time the entire song
>>
>>127799002
Probably 5
>>
>>127799588
Mesa mark amps are so good that real niggas buy them for 1/5th the price on the used market and never even think about playing anything else. Mesa amplifiers are the best amplifiers money can buy.

>>
I'm a Fender fanboy. I play Fender amps and guitars.
The original Boogie was a modified Bassman in a Princeton cab.
>>
>>127799652
They don't. Mesa's mark amplifiers can do anything from jazz to crunchy blues to hard rock and metal. They're incredibly versatile, and you can usually pick up a mark amp for under 1000 dollars. If I could only have one amp for the rest of my life it'd be a mark V or VII.
>>
>>127799667
I thought Marshalls were modified Bassmans?
>>
>>127799667
>"dual rec = basically a fender"

>>
>>127799677
They were too. JTM45 was at least. Everything's a damn modded Bassman.
Fender is the oldest living amp company around, I think (not THE oldest, but the oldest existing one). Older than they are a guitar company.
>>
>>127799676
an eq pedal can do everything
>>
>>127799685
>trying to insinuate that mesa only makes dual or triple recs

>>
>>127799685
Nah, they got Bruce Zinky for that (now he runs Supro) in the 90s with the Pro-Sonic stuff. It was supposed to be the answer to Rectos, but they kept it in the Custom Shop so it was never popular.
>>
>>127799691
Mesa mark amplifiers have built in EQ and are beautifully articulate.
>>
>>127799702
Wait, I guess Zinky sold Supro. Not important, but I don't know where he is now.
>>
>>127799712
wow that's cool $300 amps have those. if you're so concerned with just copping other people's tones that's fine i guess i would just get a quad cortex or something tho. but i think the victory amps make the guitar sound better. you should keep the same tone but just roll the volume or tone off on the guitar and adjust your picking style to suit the song and keep your personal sound imo
>>
>>127799696
go play your tranny jm with flower stickers all over it
>>
>>127799629
You can sell pretty much any mark for 60-70% for what you paid
>>
>>127799735
Who hurt you? I play modelers because I can't be assed to set up a bunch of heavy shit for every gig, but 90% of my tones still come from mesa sims. You'd have to be retarded to think that innovation ended in 1960 with marshall. Actually kys.
>>
>>127799781
lol no one. when someone asks me to go from playing from playing bluegrass to blues to classical i don't grab a different acoustic, i just pick it differently and play the arrangements differently, use dynamics to accent the song differently. you can do that with an electric
>>
my dream guitar is a 50s blackguard telecaster. like what keith richards plays.
the fender custom shop makes one for 4k but that is absolutely insane money for a bolt-on neck screwed to a slab body
>>
>>127799869
I like them, but the OG blackguard finish is always hard to come by at any affordable price. It's not like the Butterscotch Blonde exactly. The Blackguards would age and then resemble that orange tinted Butterscotch later on. Originally, it's more like Honey Blonde. Like picrel.
>>
There is a mouse in the back of my small amp
>>
>>127799916
that's my issue. blonde is too light, butterscotch is too dark. actual blackguards had this in-between color that i absolutely love
>>
>>127799931
he's just trying to live damn, let it be
>>
>>127799937
I mean, I guess it's close to honey blonde. There's occasionally poly finished Teles in that, but I rarely see it in nitro unless it's one of those pricey blackguard reissues. Then they call it Blackguard Blonde (it could very well be its own color, but it's very close).
>>
>>127799691
This is cope, an EQ pedal is not turning a Deluxe Reverb into a Mesa Mark IV. If it could Mesa wouldn't even exist.
>>
>>127799987
if your eq knobs aren't flat you don't actually like your amp
>>
>>127799391

Yeah, it was when Fender originally named it the Broadcaster, but Gretsch threatened to sue because they had a Broadkaster drum set. So Fender took off the "Broadcaster" brand while Leo thought of a new name. So they pushed out some ultra rare models with just a Fender sticker and got to be known as a Nocaster.
>>
>>127800006
Nah, knobs are there for turning.
>>127800066
This is the real answer. You should be able to get your sounds from just your amp, with some obvious exceptions like wah or chorus. If you can't, your amp isn’t that good.

Early MIM classic series are great because the mexico factory didn't have the machines to make the vintage bodies and necks yet so those were made in America then shipped to mexico to have the parts installed.

they are basically AVRI with lower quality electronics and hardware.

they're all based on the original power amp design by RCA. Leo Fender made an amp off the design that became the Bassman. Jim Marshall copied it the Bassman and swapped the American parts he couldn't get with British parts he could, and made the JTM45
That's why the Bassman and the JTM45 are basically the same amp curcuit-wise

Any of you guys ever put together a partscaster from a stripped body? The body is routed for Telecaster hardware and pickups but it’s just wood, no string ferrules or screws or anything. I’ve bought complete/loaded bodies and necks and put them together before with minor fretwork, but never actually put anything together from stripped and loose parts.
It’s a specific body shape that I love but original guitars with that shape are very expensive ($4k+), and this guy cuts bodies in different shapes but routed for simple Tele hardware. I want this body style and this is the first time I’ve seen any bodies of this shape using regular Fender style bolt on necks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTi_Px1F7OM
I think it's crazy the way it almost anticipated the punk sound, I'm thinking 90's and 2000's punk/garage rock specially indie bands

Is there any merit to the idea of trying to improve picking speed by treating practice like a workout routine?
i.e
>Say I want to be able to pick at 200BPM but can only do at 130BPM cleanly
Each practice do sets of picking at 140BPM for 1 minute, rest for 30 seconds, then repeat until failure
Then once I can pick cleanly at 140BPM… use a similar routine but now at 150BPM

yeah kind of. download scott's bass lessons groove trainer. it's a metronome that you can also set drones, or have it increase bpm by a set amount after so many bars. just like going to the gym tho if you practice a certain pattern you'll really excel at that pattern but you won't be as fast at others, like the only way to really get faster at playing a song is to rehearse that song. i also find that just picking a single open string helps a lot because the faster you pick, the different the tension of the string feels as the pick goes through it, also your arm wrist and hand movements will change. the faster you go the more arm movement and less wrist movement you will have so it's good to strip everything away and see how the tension in your arm and your guitar feels when playing at certain bpms. i'm in a bluegrass program and i have seen good gains from this methodology. i am at a very clean 180 bpm but its only 1/8th notes so far with any 16th notes being hammer ons or pull offs. up from 120 bpm just a few months ago. that is playing songs mind you, single note drill 220 bpm 1/8th notes is no problem but i still have more to progress over time

Musescore. I dislike the lack of fretboard for note entering. There is a plug-in, but it's not intuitive for someone who came from Guitar Pro.
I have resorted to just keeping a virtual machine with Guitar Pro 8 when I need to open newer tabs or export pretty PDFs. For everything else I'm still using GP5.

I just checked their site and necks cost more than American Fender necks, if you get some upgrades it can cost up to twice as much. Do people really pay 500 bucks for some no-name neck that doesnt even say Fender?
>>
>>127805844
Yes, people regularly build overpriced legocasters and pretend they're suhrs
>>

Why?
It's not as if the headstock says Suhr or something, it's literally bland wood without the proper headstock to even fake some brand. The guitar looks like you bought it in Walmart.

Check out Jimmi Bruno's Five (six in his old published material) fingerings. IIRC it's the typical horizontal 6sth string to 1st string in one area, but starting on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th scale degrees. The key point is running all those fingerings on all keys on one position and knowing all the notes inside.

>scooped with way too much bass
>scooped with way too much treble
If you're going for an ultra saturated distorted tone that can actually sit well in a mix, this isn't the one. CC got away with playing in drop A with dual recs getting slammed by OD's, despite the response sounding slow and loose by how focused their eq is on specific frequencies. When you're pushing an obscene amount of gain you need to be able to control which frequencies are actually being pushed, and setting everything to noon and calling it good is not a sound method. The bass on your first clip specifically is way too prevalent and could easily be dialed out on your amp before even considering coloring your tone/tightening up the low end with a pedal. Your foundation is wrong, is what I'm saying, and building on that foundation will continue to give poor results until it's fixed.

I went in maybe two or three weeks ago and they had some bs excuse about tariffs and shipping times from overseas and that they’ll call when it’s in and I left it at that. It’s a single $120 pedal so it’s not like it’s a lot of money or something that I need right this instant but still, six weeks is absurd.
>>127806954

>>
What's the difference between talent and skill? Can you be very skilled at an instrument after a lot of practice but not have talent?
>>
>>127806840
if something is available on Amazon why would you bother ordering from a small business?
Amazon ships it the next day, it gets there in two days max, and has easy returns, etc.
Some mom and pop shop will take a week to ship it, won't send you tracking, use the slowest courier service possible and it will take a month to get to you
I ordered strings from a mom and pop music store and it took them 21 days to ship it and when they did they didn't provide any tracking or notify me it shipped. They didn't respond when I asked for an update after two weeks so when I initiated a complaint with PayPal they finally got to me all butthurt asking why I was complaining to PayPal.
Shitty companies need to fail. I don't care if they're small local businesses

They’re a Boss dealer (who isn’t?) so I figured they’d have it in stock considering they’ve got just about every Boss pedal on the floor in a big display demo rack, but they didn’t so they ordered it. I’m not waiting six weeks for them to ship it to me, I’m waiting six weeks for them to order it for themselves and me to go pick it up from their counter which makes this whole ordeal even more gay.

Skill is performing well at a task. Talent is an aptitude or affinity to learning a particular skill. For some reason I always think of Naruto when this discussion comes up because [Spoilers] I guess they have the no-talent try-hard (Rock Lee) who ultimately performs well, the talented try-hard who excels (Sasuke), and the talented guy who flip-flops between lazing around and putting in a ton of effort (Naruto). You guys seein' this??
>>
>>127807331
skill is developed through experience
talent is innate ability and intuition

It's hard for people with no talent to overcome some of the very basic concepts of music. They don't count or even feel the beat and accents. They don't read music or understand which notes or strings are which. They don't understand general music terminology and structure. That's all before we'd even start trying to paint the finer details of the music we're trying to make.

A skilled musician started young, can sight read, has great technique, and understands the music in front of them.

A talented musician can hear something, internalize it, then play it back or build off of it.
