We shit on emo too hard (and partly nu metal). They were the last organic rock scenes created by kids..and rock, if nothing else, is about teenagers. Not adult hipsters. 2000s critics just pushed uncool 20 and 30 somethings with zero sense of rebellion, and after that, whites just devolved into Stomp Clap Hey, Imagine Dragons, and One Republic. And now whatever pickup from that is even worse.
