why didn't van halen age as good as gnr and motley crue?

for some reason they just don't resonate with modern audience
>>
>>127838288
Van Halen was significantly better than both of those bands. GnR had 1 album
>>
>>127838288
>motley crue
i've never met anyone who listened to them outside gen-xers

Bullshit. My zoomer nephews love VH

My favorite aspect of the rest of time is that Eddie Van Halen is no longer considered to be one of the best guitarists of all time.

They did to an extent, its just after their manager's death in 1993, they hired Ray Daniels as manager under Al's insistence (brother-in-law) and that fucked the band up with mismanagement and created rifts between Ed & Al and Sammy.

Also, the dysfunction in relationships in this band was next-level. Ed and Al were tight. Even if one was in the wrong, the other one had their back. Asian-Euro ancestry where they don't forgive and don't forget. Sammy airing dirty laundry in his book killed any future chance of reconciliation (save for Ed communicating prior to death). Mike got ousted by association with Sammy. They resented Sam bought Ed & Al's shares of Cabo Wabo and the thing made Sam bank to the tune of 90 million.

Dave doesn't get a free pass. He is a guarded narcissist, and cannot do long term relationships due to maladjusted personality. An asshole. He drove them up the wall in the 70s despite being the bros' ticket to success. Dave killed his chance to reunite with the band due to saying some cocky shit.

What's important to understand is Ed is a savant, hypersensitive and likely autistic. Big bro Al backed him up and protected him always, even if they fought like cats and dogs. Ed couldn't handle long tours away from home and hotel rooms. Self medicated always. The golden child. And when couldn't deal with band issues when sober would just close up. Potential avoidant.

Whoever sanctioned Gary Cherone to join totally derailed them. No one moderated Ed, III flopped bigly and wounded Ed. He never recovered. The Mike Post interview last year revealed new info: Al was drinking again by 1998, no one but Ed played on III, Gary was told what to sing. Post was afraid to interject and let Ed have carte blanche. Gary was no alpha like Dave or Sam. 5150 studios gave Ed full reign of the band.

Sadly, no one is controlling the band's legacy even now. When a band stops touring and doesn't reissue the catalog, the music just gets forgotten. Bad management.

>Eddie Van Halen is no longer considered to be one of the best guitarists of all time.
Are you delusional? He is still considered to one of the best guitarists of all time. And for good reason.
>>
VH3 definitively proved that Eddie was not the main creative force in the band nor should he be.
>>
>>127841727
He needed a Sammy or a Dave.
Gary was not one of them, just a yes man.
>>
>>127841894
he got his wish to have a yes man who would go along with his retarded ideas
>>
>>127841727
Whoever wrote those riffs on the early albums was the main creative force. Dave can’t sing and Sammy can’t write anything that has teeth.

I've had this conversation three times now with zoomers. They'll have Def Leppard shirt or mention they like Motley Crue and I'll say that my favorite band from that style or era is Van Halen and they either don't really know them or don't like them. I haven't really gotten into any hair metal adjacent stuff aside from Van Halen. Motley Crue in particular sounds like Van Halen without any substance to me. Anyways, it doesn't mean anything.

honestly no. vh is good but they sound too theatrical and corny. motley crue and gnr are basically urban metal. Even rappers fuck wit them

because there's no vulnerable/romantic aspect to draw the ladies in, or it's overshadowed by the big dick technical stuff, they become a band for the dads who were there and their nerdy teenagers. you see this with former stadium fillers the who as well, they reek of puberty and have not kept up with the beatles and the stones in the popularity stakes
vh all looked all like cavemen and played music that was cool and heavy back then but increasingly dork-coded today. sometimes all you need is a nothing else matters and you're good, but they couldn't (or didn't dare to) go there. so if it's all just entertainment then you're bound to go out of style when new and exciting forms appear, and here we are
>>
>>127841603
the melodies criticism is valid. but ed was a bitchin rhythm guitarist (his solo's generally suck tho, but i guess they are needed for transitions between sections)
>>
>>127844095
i think the mom was a white colonizer (dutch i think) native indonesian combo. so ed and al would be 1/4, despite most thinking they halfsies.
>>
>>127845151
actually, weirdly enough, as dave pointed out, vh was the one metal-ish band who had a lot of female fans.
>>
>>127838288
>gnr and motley crue
They aged shit.
>>
>>127845151
but i will say, piggy-backing off your general theme:
i did a deep dive on vh recently (at least dlr era) and the fact dlr was a total show biz schmaltzy guy did severely type-cast them.
any song in which he had to sing in his non-show biz persona (say, i'll wait or little guitars) was a complete no-go for me.
and that bled over to hagar era, where i, at least, just can't deal with anyone leading band not doing the dlr smaltz thing, no matter how lame that was at times.

>>
>>127845326
those are females i bet.
vh was generally famous by the time of the album but was chick-repellent because it was based on guitar-hero stuff.
doing that gay song made them huge crossover stars with both dude and chick fans

maybe because eddie is dead and they havent toured because of that. dont know how many kids youve interviewed about van halen but their music sounds better today than years ago because all music is so shitty today especially rock. even if it doesnt resonate with the younger crowd today who cares they made their money and had fun doing it. not all music needs to stand the test of time. do you really think ariana grande is going to be relevant in 50yrs time?

not really a good gauge since everybody below a certain age went to rock shows back then, when it was still the dominant genre
>>127847199
>not all music needs to stand the test of time.
and vh evidently didn't. glad we're in agreement
>do you really think ariana grande is going to be relevant in 50yrs time?
apt comparison
>>
>>127838288
Motley Crue and all them people looked up to Van Halen, they created metal.
>>
But then Toys In The Attic might be the best 80s rock album and it came out in 1975
>>
>>127838288
it's fucking hilarious seeing a geriatric DLR strutting onstage dressed like a pimp
>>
>>127838288
Because people realize they aren't that great. No one wants to listen to noodling like on Eruption, and Jump is just goofy. No one can mention any other song by them.
>>
>>127841691
>He is still considered to one of the best guitarists of all time.
By whom? Retards? He sucks.
>>
>>127844691
Yeah, the boomers who paraded them and just listened to mainstream crap are dying of. Truth will come out that they were overrated.
>>
>>127838288
As much as I respect VH I don't really enjoy them. As a kid in the 80s I was much more into Def Leppard for example. Plus the bass lines are too simplistic and boring for me, they held the music back.
