Talk about prog. I don't know. I don't make threads. If you're looking to listen to music, try out Return to Ommadawn by Mike Oldfieldhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxB75bVkYxw
https://old.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/1nn760e/
/prog/ keeps dying after only a few posts :/
>>127845534Perhaps it's because the threads usually quickly devolve into "Fripp sucks" circle jerks. At least we've moved past the unfortunate "Vander is a nazi" period.
>>127845534Imagine if prog had a bunch of sluts lipsyncing to their music? We'd be popular then.

>>127845658Is this Caravan?I LOVE the album In the Land of Grey and PinkNine feet underground is such a banger.Haven't heard any other album but I might in the next few days. I mostly like to hear albums in chronological order but any suggestions?
I can't find another rock thread, so pardon the off topic question. What do you call the rock of the 2000s? That's the music I remember the most. Stuff like Fountains of wayne, bowling for soup, funeral for a friend and the like. If anyone answers, thanks. I've always just been curious.
>>127847018>Favorite album?Selling England by the Pound>Song?Supper's Ready>Play any instruments?Piano/Hammond organ. I've learned Tony's parts for some their songs (Firth of Fifth, The Knife, Watcher of the Skies, The Musical Box) and I'm currently working on Apocalypse in 9/8. I'd like to buy a nice synth eventually so I can learn Cinema Show and Riding the Scree.

>>127846614Just listen to slightly all the time until the other songs start to sound good. Moon in june and the others are gonna filter most people. Btw their first two albums are way more accessible and have tons of catchy melodies and interesting transitions every 60 seconds. Third is kind of intense even if it could be considered their best.
i think peter gabriel sucks more than fripp
Sound Awake is one of my favorite modern prog albums ever but I have tried for years and still couldn't get into this, it's like the songs are needlessly complex without being memorable.I really like the new singles though

>>127847018>Favorite album? Foxtrot from Peter, Duke from Phil>Song? Why?Lately I've been loving Dodo / Lurker. Just a powerful, super catchy song. When Phil comes in with the bells at the end I ascend.>Play any instruments?Drums are my main and I know literally all the Phil parts by heart. Play a bit of bass and guitar too, but I have some irreparable nerve damage on my fretting hand from an injury, so unfortunately I can't play a lot of the 12 string / barre chord heavy Mike parts I like. bump
>>127853828The image is a subtle joke. The band is called Camel, but half of the people in that particular lineup came from Caravan where Camel and Caravan both start with the sound "ca-", thus rhyming with a subgenre of progressive rock, Canterbury scene. The caption says that this is now "a canterbury scene thread" therefore, if we change half of Camel to former Caravan members, we get a misconception that Camel is a Canterbury scene band.

>>127859111As a Rush fan who saw them live three times, I unironically agree it was not a big loss for music. His retirement was a moderate loss for music. Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels were both mildly good, so he was still capable of making nonshit music. Peart dying in the 70s or 80s would have been a big loss for music. Dying in the 90s, maybe you'd think there was a chance he could still pull a rabbit out of his hat. But dying in 2020 had virtually zero impact on music.

>>127865782There are very few genres of music that don't suck, so a lot of jazz and prog fans cross over. Also, lots of prog bands and musicians did fusion stuff.

hey /prog/, thanks for that Ethos 1976 album (ardour), pretty good stuff.i can see why they were forgotten, coming in too late, sounding a bit too generic, but they're not as bad a yes-clone as Starcastle, and the mellotron and guitar work is pretty damn good.didn't listen to the entire 77 album, but there's good stuff on there too, 'the players' sounds like a lost track from Lizard (but better)

I'm trying to get deeper into prog but the only classic bands I like so far so far are Gentle Giant, Magma and pre-80s King Crimson, and later bands that are derived or influenced from these three.Everything else I've heard has either been extremely kitsch or not nearly as "progressive" as I'd hope for.

>>127868760S/T and Strange Days are the only albums here that could be considered proto-prog
>>127868787I agree. What the fuck is prog about Deep Purple and The Who? Not to mention that one boy band.
>>127868852I could see DP's first three albums in the 60s being seen as protoprog, but definitely not In Rock or Machine Head. Not to mention half of these albums came out well after Prog was an established genre
>>127868852Won't dispute it on all their stuff, but Child in Time is very clearly proto-prog.
>>127868852I could see the argument for Quadrophenia actually, if not for the fact it came out in '73. Though I don't think progarchives separates albums by genre, so a lot of bands that don't really fit end up in Proto-Prog or "Prog Related"

>>127868852>What the fuck is prog about Deep PurpleNigga....
>>127863908the problem (one of them at least) with Progarchives is that it labels an entire artist's discography as a single genreand if that artist has ever made anything remotely close to prog, then all of their music is labeled as suchin this case, jazz fusion is in there, because bands like Nucleus, Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra are prog adjacentso of course they had to put in straight up jazz guys like Miles, Chick Corea and Hancock in there - and label all the stuff they did as Jazz Fusion, even if it was only a fraction of their albums

Do you think the term "progressive" accidentally implies any false senses of superiority? Do you think standard rock is just as demanding as prog rock? I was browsing jazz music archives after the funny post from >>127863908 and couldn't help but click on the progressive big band page and found this summary to be pretty interesting.
>>127875015I think a lot of artists and scenes have a false sense of superiority. Punk is a great example even though their ethos is supposedly opposite or reactionary against prog.
