The band has gone on record saying Colors was the entire band throwing paint at the wall to see what stuck but somehow it all came together effortlessly. This new one and Colors 2 have a similar issue where they both lack cohesion and sound like they're just trying to "out-BTBAM" themselves.There's also definitely a dimension missing in the riffs and melodies with Dustie's absence. Paul no longer has anybody to play counterpoint so it becomes obvious very fast he's just playing off himself the entire time.

VE and TCGD mark the point where they'd start flirting with more off-kilter patterns and rhythms but TFOL marked a degree of confidence in that approach that the previous 4 albums didn't have. To me, that was the point where you could no longer call what they were doing alternative metal. Problem is, they've been stuck on that point ever since. CB is maybe a refinement of sorts with a left field idea or two, but by and large it actually has been the same album over and over for the last 10 years. From VE to TFOL, there was still some development.

Piah Mater sounds exactly like 2000's Opeth. newer popular bands like An Abstract Illusion, Iotunn, Wilderun and Disillusion. someone recced me bands like Lamentations and Fires in the Distance based on sounding like them. there was even a whole ass video on Opeth clones on youtube which i can't for the life of me find but know exist because i remember finding bands like Eternal Storm and Loneshore through that.and i'm betting there's a shit ton more that i don't even know about basedon all these. basically just as many prog metal bands took the copy Opeth route as the copy Dream Theater route.

While it isn't really my thing, I know Dessideriums recent album got a lot of praise in the prog scene, has the guitarist behind Arkaik who I really like. This album is much more prog than it is metal. Also Anciients album Beyond the Reach of the Sun.

The Writ (also on Black Sabbath's album Sabotage) might be a little proggier than Megalomania. Both are about 10 minutes in length. The only song on here that I haven't heard is "...And Justice For All".I can think of a few bands that play shorter standard songs but sometimes stretched out and make epics. Off the top of my head: >DIO >Judas Priest>Megadeth>Pantera >W.A.S.P. I think Van Halen did it a few times.I'm not sure if Rainbow counts. Something I've noticed is that there are bands out there that were clearly influenced by Tool, but mostly copied the aesthetics (like how the singer sounds), rather than the proggy aspects of their compositions.Off the top of my head, you can see this on the first albums of Limp Bizkit and Staind.
