His first album in 7 years. It's already been released if you're living in the correct timezone.
I can't lie Mausbros, although I do prefer this to Addendum and Screen Memories so far, I still find it to be a bit too subdued and kind of reserved compared to the rest of his discography. I haven't noticed the standout flashes of inexplicable genius and madness, be it musically or lyrically, that I've come to love so much about him, although I can understand that it's not really the point of his music per se nor is it fair to approach a man as passionate as John's art like this, but you know how it is. It seems like there's a whole lot of searching and yearning for salvation with a solemn tone judging from this surface level first listen, and I'd bet that its themes and his intentions will come clear with more refined listens. Some of the arrangements are particularly beautiful, especially on Pick It Up and Adorabo.
It should also be noted that he's credited as doing everything on this album himself, whereas, AFAIK, his -sadly deceased- brother Joe used to play bass on his albums at least (not sure about the guitar parts).
Try not to devolve into pointless political consolewarring. I'm just glad to see this guy doing well.
>>
I wonder if there's going to be a companion release to this like he usually does? Wouldn't complain if he doesn't, new Maus is always welcome

His most acclaimed song is a cover of a song where he barely changed anything from the original.
>>
>>127869873
You don't think Do Your Best, Believer, Bennington, & No Title (Molly) are some of his also some of his best work? Hey Moon is his most popular, sure, but that doesn't make his other good songs any less good
>>
>>127869883
Bennington is pretty good.
>>
>>127869305
this and the new Ariel LP.... yeah I'm thinking its the year of the chud.
>>
>>127870115
John isn't a chud, and neither am I
>>
>>127869305
Each of his albums gives me no more than a few tunes to add to my definitive John Maus mixtape. The rest of his music is disposable.
>>
>>127870158
That's entirely valid.
>>
I'm not saying John Maus needs to go crazy and reinvent the wheel but good lord dude use a different sonic palette for a few tracks.
>>
Halfway through right now honestly the album is extremely boring and quite bland.

The tracks are neither beautiful nor manic/creative
>>
>>127869305
It's a good album but yeah on the first listen it felt like there were 5-6 songs that sounded the exact same, there is not really any "mantra" hooks as John calls them where he repeats a phrase or sentence with high energy, I think the singles he chose were the strongest (except for Antichrist, that song is silly)
>>
>>127870420
The interviews he did this year were pretty good

Pitiless Censors used the same palette and passed the test with flying colors. It's a songwriting thing.

boring album, go listen to the new Nation of Language that came out last week if you want some throwback 80s synth pop, not this dull shit

Handful of good tracks but some pretty dull tracks too. Overall feels like it's demos and leftovers from between Love Is Real and Pitiless Censors, so it's definently listenable but I still feel a little disappointed considering the wait and that the tracks he played on tour and gave away on CDs at the shows were all left off the album (which is truly annoying since Alien was very comfy).

So not bad, but not great either.
>>
Although I didn't expect anything on the level of the first three albums, it doesn't quite live up to what I expected. Songs have a tendency to not really go anywhere (kind of like Screen memories and Addendum, although it's better than these). A song like Let The Time Fly sounds so nice but abruptly stops when it could get a lot more interesting. It's still a solid album, but no masterpiece

>>127869807
Like he usually does? He only did that with Addendum

>>127872240
Definitely agree on the last part, the Rarities for the road CDs felt more varied and interesting than this. Another Day was a masterpiece

I expected to either sound desolate and dejected ; since he's been through grief, a divorce, political disillusion, serious attempts at cutting off his livelihood...etc ; or sound valiant and fired up as a result of said life circumstances, but I guess you shouldn't rely on expectations when it comes to John. He's enjoying himself at least, and returning to what he seemed to have abandoned for a while.
I'll stick to I Hate Music & al.
>>
It's a solid album but nothing really sticks out to me.
Still, I can't complain about getting more Maus.

>>
Because We Built It, Came & Got, Shout and Dissappears all rule

Rest is kind of forgettable.

He said he had recorded 30+ songs in these sessions so hopefully there are some more
>>
Haven't listened yet but based on the singles and the Rarities for the Road I have no hopes for this being anything but bland. Ariel's new album is amazing though
>>127872956
Did he get divorced? I thought he was still married to that schizo lady, people were seeing her with John at shows a few months ago.
>>
It would have been super neat if he expanded the ideas behind 'fish with broken dreams' again, because that's some cool looking uncharted territory right there
>>
>>127874977
I thought Pick It Up was also really good. Might be my favorite
>>
>>127872956
>>127875077
This album reads like a new beginning I think. He did get divorced but he actually married (apparently) another woman now apparently. He also converted to christianism and completely remade his public image from scratch (new internet presence, apology for jan 6, intense touring etc)
I hope he's here to stay and won't black out for 7 years like he'd do before
>>
>>127875651
Interesting. Did you get this from his interviews?
>>
>>127875282
Agreed
>>
>>127874977
Disappears is easily my favorite, but yeah, the rest of the album is mostly forgettable. Seems like the best tracks were the ones that got released early.
>>
>>127875651
there is literally no reason for him to apologize for jan 6th. what does he have to be sorry for?
>>
>>127875651
>He did get divorced but he actually married (apparently) another woman now apparently
No, he was separated from his wife for a while but they recently reconciled. He's had a shitty time overall since his brother also died during their previous tour, and he was part of his band too, so it was quite literally while they were both preparing for a show.

And? He was there with a documentary crew for something unrelated and the director wanted to capture what was going on since it might've been historical.
>>
>>127880128
>>127880159
Exactly. Did he participate in any violence? Did he advocate for the insurrection? Nobody knew what was going to happen there & all he did was join his friend to capture footage of a historical moment for a documentary. He didn't do anything wrong & he's STILL apologizing
>>
>>127880233
He left even before shit got nuts, people are just pissed that he was there period. It would've been absolutely nothing of interest if it weren't for him appearing in an MDE episode as a musical guest a few years earlier, which cemented him as being a chud in peoples minds.
>>
>>127880233
I reckon a lot of people were terrified and legit thought the country was going to fall into a dicatorship. Ariel and John are sort of easy punching bags for traumatized shitlibs.
>>
Been listening on repeat all day
>>
>>127881329
It's okay but not that good, goddamn.
>>
>>127881379
It is the best album I have ever heard in my entire life. It might be the greatest album of all time
>>
>>127870115
fuck yes
>>
The album is good, but I just went to his show in Brooklyn and his performance + the energy of the crowd was absolutely fucking insaneee. The whole crowd was jumping and raging. The album itself doesn't compare to the experience of seeing him live. Amazing amazing amazing show.

Ariel Pink and Maus need to make another album together :3
>>
I think John lost the spark. Ever since Screen Memories his work has kind of been the same song over and over again with only a few exceptions. The singles from his newest album were so fucking boring. That being said, it's crazy that Ariel is still making great music (besides Ariel Pink's Darkside)
>>
>>127872521
This was the opener tonight, reminded me a lot of Dead Boys' Stiv Bators, personally.
>>
>>127880233
J6 wasn't an insurrection. Even if it was, John and Ariel never went into the Capitol and did nothing wrong or illegal.
>>
>>127882042
I think the Rarities for the road CD proved that he still got it, but his track selection for the actual album seems to be subpar unfortunately. Nothing on this album comes close to something like his cover of Evo Gospoda, which is as well done as anything on Pitiless Censors. Stick to the Rarities if you ask me.
>>127881914
His shows were always a riot and a display of his utmost passion. I hope I can catch him live soon.
>>
>>127869305
we're getting killed rn not listening to this unc skull emoji
>>
>>127882449
Honestly I wasn't a fan of Rarites either. At this point I just think his post-Pitiless discography isn't for me, I prefer his raw and weird stuff like I've Got Problems Man over the synthpop stuff
>>
reconstruct your life is a great song
>>
>>127882465
Really? Rarities had some really good tracks on it, arguably even better than Screen Memories.
>>
>>127869305
Can somebody please release a record with a fucking logo and title on the cover? This artistic angst is so gay.
>>
it's a bit sleepy and boring but it will grow on everyone down the line, definitely some skips but there is quite a few nice tracks on it. it does have some songs that are reminiscent of early john, theotokos, tonight, for example, adorabo unlike any track he has made so far. let the time fly, tonight, losing your mind, having that typical maus style uplifting punchy groovy tracks but nothing new.

water is fun, i like that style of track he does, where just names off inanimate objects. imma get you to the water

overall though meh.

>>127882465
I do agree with your preference, since stuff like that and snowless winter is what drew me toward him in the first place, but I'll still give Rarities a lot of credit for being much bolder, livelier, and even more poignant than anything else he's done since Pitiless. There's a bunch of songs that feature cool uses of his vocals, fuller instrumentation and 'deeper' synths, and a sense of urgency.
But yeah I understand your comment about him possibly losing his spark a little better now. He's not on that manic wavelength anymore, where his songs wonderfully treaded the line between dylan thomas and wesley willis, about to fall apart at any minute but persevering through sheer passion and strength of will. They matched the image of the sweat drenched autismo much better. Either way, the most important thing about him is that he still sounds sincere, and for that I'll have to pay closer attention.

And there's some other lyrics referencing the chopper and how it knocks off some of the troops.

There wasn't an insurrection in DC in 2021, there was one in Seattle in 2020.

Loved the production and synth choices but it was overwhelmingly filler. Because We Built It, Disappears, Shout, and Adorabo are really good and the rest are lacking personality, hooks, anything that makes them stand out from any other synth pop. You can always tell when it's Maus which is a plus but you'd be hard pressed to say that the majority of the album is somehow his most stand out material. Synth pop in itself has a relatively rigid framework that Maus was able to carve his own niche with which was certainly impressive for many years, but his ability to write unique songs in the genre appears to be waning. I only like Edge of Forever off of Screen Memories, Addendum has some great highlights, I don't need miracles from Maus but if you're going to take 8 years to release a proper album I would expect more quality.

The "tour CDs" he put out were pretty cool, would be nice to have those on streaming but like many artists who do miscellaneous releases they don't always wind up on streaming. Love Letters From Hell and I Want To Live! also not present on streaming. Was always curious why the album cover for Songs is the same as I Want To Live! and why the cover for Addendum is the cover for Love Letters From Hell? Too lazy to seek out more artwork?

I saw Maus with the band in 2018 and it was so fucking awesome, one of the best shows I've been to. Everyone went ape shit for Cop Killer and the audience had a great call and response with John every time he screamed we were like "YEEEEAAHHHHH WHOOOOOOO!"
Holy Shit opened and they were so sloppy and unpredictable it was like seeing the Velvet Underground live or something which was awesome.
>>

Would love to get a proper live album from him
>>
I Hate Antichrist, funnily enough, is the centerpiece here
>>
Holy Maus!

Disappears is easly one of my new favourite John Maus songs. Whilst this album is definitely growing on me, I've no idea why none of these songs are on it:
https://youtu.be/teBPDfGE9eM?si=2CUW49CAi3LIhivy
We can only hope he's got another addendum album in the works for all this extra material he seems to have hanging about
>>
>>127882042
See him perform live and your mind will be blown. I liked some of his songs but wasn't a super fan by any means. However, after seeing him live, I realize that the music is almost secondary to his raw talent as a performer. The show was just nonstop action and emotion and insanity. He completely blew my mind. He is a titan. Unlike any show I've seen.
