Does anyone agree that the pedal steel is one of the most underrated instruments in modern music? It has such a lush and dreamy sound to it, but it is pretty much only used in country. I feel like it has a lot of untapped potential in other genres.

No. Understand what you're saying. But if you think so then get one.
>>
Also if anyone knows of any good examples of the instrument being used outside of country music, please share.

For me, Luke Schneider comes to mind.

Mr. Mooney was an incredible player, knew exactly how to stand out in the mix without overtaking the other instruments.

I'm primarily a bassist but I've been really interested in buying one and learning it.

Are you op?

Find someone close to you / near you -- who has one and talk to him.
>>

I wouldn't say that, I'm a bit above average on bass but I wouldn't describe myself as overpowered.

Go to /gg/ - talk to a pro. If their don't know.. find someone near you who knows.

Myself, I think you're trying to justify spending that much, and i would say yeah, provided it's a very small fraction of your income.

But don't listen to me.

Send it to /gg/

I've always wanted to get a lap or pedal steel. But I just know I'd learn Sleepwalk then throw it in my closet and ever touch it again.

Jerry Garcia used one for a while.

It's one of the hardest instruments to play and just sounds gay and noodley if its being used by some hipster that doesn't know how to play it
