Is he the greatest bassist of all times?
>>
I always found the whole "greatest at x" thing to be dumb, there are a ton of people who could play what he does but it just isn't their style. There are probably like a few thousands unknown bass players that are on his level.

Of all time? Probably not, but he's certainly one of the best and has a very unique style while still staying true to the instrument instead of just using it as a glorified guitar like Billy Sheehan. Some of my favorite bass lines of his.

Probably. He will be remembered for a long time for sure.
>>
lol listen to more music
>>
>>127888499
He's up there in terms of playing ability. Too bad he sucks at writing, composing, performing, and everything else.
>>
>>127888499
>>127888644
Idk, probably not, but primus sucks
>>
>>127888499
he's good but he's exhausting to listen to and his songs go on five minutes longer than necessary
>>
>>127888499
Nah, its still Mel Schacher
>>
>>127888499
he's good by jamband, rock and alt. metal standards but otherwise he'd get smoked by your average jazzer.

To defy the laws of tradition fucking slaps unironically

I know it's a silly cliche and I don't even love his genre but Jaco Pastorius I wish we got to hear more from

Not remotely true their songs aren't even very long

"Best bass player ever" is a stupid argument but that line is just not true. Very few bassists could even sound like his hands do and it takes a crazy amount of skill to play and sing something like Tommy the Cat. I'm not even a big Primus fan but playing and singing, touring constantly, and still putting out music under different projects is something most other bassists couldn't do.

Mark King is the only completely package I can think of that would have been able to handle it, not sure how he's doing these days.

Was going to link Hadrien if he wasn't in your links. Always delighted to see when he's in a project, cool stuff with Uehara Hiromi recently but I don't think of him as a solo artist at all.

A younger jazz guy on upright I enjoy a lot is Philip Norris, plays with Emmett Cohen and I don't dread when his solos come up like other bassists. Very articulate and melodic soloist

Can't stand electric bass fusion shred generally though like that last link.

Those are either from straight funk or jazz backgrounds

s'always been
>>
>>127888564
Could they play it? Sure.
Could they come up with it themselves? Probably not.
>>
>>127888499
No, neither in terms of ability nor influence.
>>
>>127892464
He died a true artist's death, getting beat to death in an alley behind a club after annoying the caveman bouncer
>>
>>127888499
Hugh Hopper, John Entwistle, Mike Watt, Jaco Pastorius, Pedro Aznar and John Myung are all better.
>>
Whats his best bass line? Fish on and Toys Go Winding Down are my favorites.
>>
>>127893893
>John Myung
ok, incel
>>
>>127888499
No, not even close. His wacky shtick ruined his legitimacy.
>>
>>127888644
Unironically
>>
>>127888499
Only bassist still using a whammy bar after the 80s gotta account for something.
>>
Meme, soulless completely forgettable "music"
