Why did they have almost no influence compared to their contemporaries like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath?
>>
It's strange. I fucking love Deep Purple but people only seem to remember them for Smoke on the Water, which may be the worst song on Machine Head. RIP Jon Lord
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK4U1p1WQU4
>>
truth is they're nowhere near the level of Zeppelin or Sabbath. in fact, i'm willing to be their legacy is owed almost entirely to Smoke on the Water.
>>
>>127888886
This. They're a solid rock band but not a single one of their albums even approaches any of Zeppelin or Sabbath's best work.
>>
Because a side project from the guitarist is miles better than the main band
>>
>>127888886
>>127888895
Highway Star and Child In Time are just as good as the best of either Zeppelin or Sabbath's songs.
Machine Head is just as good as IV and Paranoid.

SO MANY DIED
>>

They influenced every single metal band that came after them. The fuck are you on about?
>>
>>127888886
In terms of technical ability
Blackmore = Page
Bonham > Paice
Glover > Jones
Lord > Jones
Gillan = Plant
>>
>>127888943
Led Zeppelin is better than Deep Purple but Blackmore is by far the best guitarist and just musician overall of the three guitarists between Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Listen to the solo in Stargazer.
>>
>>127888855
there would be no metallica without purple
good chunk of purple drumming is in lars ulrich dna
smoke on the water is literally one of those fucking riff you'd do on guitar
>>
>>127888902
>Machine Head is just as good as IV and Paranoid.
big fat no. aside from played to death Smoke on the Water, Highway Star and Pictures of Home are the only good tracks. Space Truckin' is overrated.

Child in Time is an all time great though.
>>
>>127889151
Maybe I'm a Leo and Lazy are both great
>>
>>127888907
>>127888919
why it's always side 2 that gets jerked off? i mean, those 2 songs are clearly the highlights of the album but i never see anyone praise side 1.
>>
>>127889068
there'd probably be no Iron Maiden either in which case, still no Metallica
>>
>>127889166
Maybe I'm a Leo is fine but Lazy is awful and unironically lives up to it's name
>>
>>127888943
>Bonham > Paice
Screw off. Bonham was a one-trick pony whose only trick was playing really loud. Paice was more technically proficient.
>>
>>127888855
They influenced the nerdier sides of Metal like, Prog, Neoclassical and Power Metal
>>
>>127888943
Gillan was a Plant clone that can't sing on key live
>>
>>127888855
learning guitar in the late 90s, smoke on the water was one of the first songs you had to learn (along with iron man and stairway to heaven). so i guess its a three way tie
>>
>>127888855
Nigga, what the fuck are talking about? Power, speed, prog and neoclassical metal are all hugely indebted to Purple. Hell, even trad metal alone - look at the NWOBHM.

I feel like a lot of younger Americans in particular sell Purple short because they didn't become cool again in the '90s like Sabbath and Zeppelin did.
>>
>>127888855
>Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath
they broke up and splintered off into other bands
also they had numerous personnel changes
lots of style changes as well
from psych to hard rock to whatever come taste the band is
>>
>>127890532
>whatever come taste the band is

I'd argue it's an early example of funk metal which was building on Hughes' early work with Trapeze. Along with shit like Mother's Finest, that sort of style basically laid the foundation for bands like Living Colour and Extreme.
>>
>>127888943
>Blackmore = Page
Blackmore was more technical
>Glover > Jones
Lmao what
>>
>>127888855
very unstable lineups and stylistic choice, mainly due to blackmore being such a schizo/autist. they sounded completely different in the '60s, which led to the ultra heavy for its time, In Rock, which is their shining moment in my view and they really should have kept that level of intensity going forward, but decided to weaken their sound even the following year later where the less distorted blues jamming sound took precedence over pure riffage and scorching keyboard solos (when they actually had an edge to them). Machine Head's production was also very clean albeit rather neutered sounding (compare it to Made In Japan), and the songs were more pop rock oriented than before and leaned harder into the blues/boogie/whatever elements. Gillan eventually left and they had a couple of other shining moments, namely the song Stormbringer and the closer, Soldier of Fortune, which are two of their best songs, and the followup album bringing a return to the heavy riffage with the song Burn, which is easily a top 5 Purple song. The rest of the album was whatever (unfortunately!), and who gives a shit after that. Just go to Rainbow, which completely mogged most of what Sabbath and Zeppelin were doing at that point in time.
>>
>>127890794
HOLY FUCKING THIS.
>>
>>127889713
His shrieks were more proto metal than plant, who had a bluesy voice.
>>
>>127889713
>Gillan was a Plant clone

What? They don't sound a thing alike. A Plant clone is someone like Lenny Wolf or Michael White.
>>
>>127890576
>Mother's Finest
underrated AF
>>
>>127889189
Tarot Woman is a great song, but Stargazer is the best hard rock/heavy metal song of all time.
>>
>>127888855
They are though, the obnoxious guitar playing you hear in metal "music" to this day comes from there.
>>
>>127888895
Burn is a 10/10 masterpiece.
>>
>>127890745
>Glover > Jones
>Lmao what
This is very funny, Glover's playing would best be described as serviceable, while Jones is in the top 10 of rock players.
>>
>>127889713
>>127892206
I can name a bunch of Plant, Rodgers, Coverdale and Dio clones (and even a couple of Glenn Hughes ones) but are there actually any Gillan clones? Obviously his style and in particular his screams were extremely influential on guys like Halford and Dickinson (and then the prog metal guys like Geoff Tate and Midnight), but I can't think of any singers who make me think "Yeah, he's a Gillan copycat".
>>
dunno what you mean, they are huge
>>
>>127888855
>almost no influence
You dumb tourist faggot. They helped influence all the power metal and neoclassical shit, not to mention speed metal shit with Halford and Dickinson specifically mentioning them as an influence and Metallica covering their music, so we can count thrash metal as well. Also didn't help that Mark II lasted like 3 years. And the only reason Sabbath had a huge revival was because of the reunions with Ozzy and Sharon pulling strings to get them in every rock/metal publishing headlines. They were just as dead after the mid-'80s until then.
>>
April is their best song
>>
>>127897260
It's Child In Time.
>>
>>127888919
What is this faggot shit? Is this the band that had that bridge troll Ronnie dio?
>>
>>127888855
Black Sabbath pushed the hard rock and rock genre forward by pioneering heavy metal. They had a heavier rock sound than anything before.
Led Zeppelin have a beatles like quality to them. Their music is varied and isn't just hard rock but can go from loud to quiet, somber to lively.

Deep Purple are the anthrax of the big 3 of hard rock. Maybe ACDC would be there and they would be the megadeth of the big 4.
>>
Everyone knows Smoke on the Water.
