Let's yack about The Church: aussieland's greatest export and the longest living, most powerful post-boomer band of all time. I can't think of another band that has so many albums and stayed so consistent, hell name another band who releases an album as good as hypongogue this late in their career? Personally i think their late era stuff is godtier, second only to the highest highs of their goth stuff. The early jangle is great too. Post your top 10 churchtrax:RippleTo be in your eyesLouisiana ElectricAwful AcheDelirious Crash_RideSpace saviorInvisible NumbersGeneral steve kilbey discussion is welcome too. The guy puts out like 3 albums a year
>>127891465God tier band unironcally
>>127891465one of the staples of the dollar bin at every used record store during the 90s. this album and starfish and gold afternoon fix were at every record store i ever went to
>>127891465>aussieland's greatest export and the longest living, most powerful post-boomer band of all time. >>127891659A lot of people were giving up gold for some reason
>>127891679follow-up to their big breakthrough so lots of people rushed out to get it around the time of release. it had a modern hit song on it and all the songs sound similar to the previous album. i dont know what people were expecting
>>127891490I agree wholeheartedly. What are your top tunes/albums?
>>127892172Starfish through Box of Birds is peak Church for me. Kilbey has one of the weirdest lyrics styles and it's one of the things that's drawn me to them. I discovered them through random 80s new wave compilation that had The Unguarded Moment on it and I fell in love with them. Also, shout out to Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs for loving them and furthering my love of the band.
>>127891674I like them too and he's got a similar longevity/consistency. But the church are something else man. They aren't reinventing the wheel and somehow have been mogging everybody since the late 70s
>>127892211That's cool man. I've never really listened to the whigs. Steve does spout some peculiar shit. Every now and then a sentence hits you like wtf. It's childish and genius at the same time
>>127891465they have four songs at the karaoke place I frequent so those of course:under the milky wayunguarded momentreptilealmost with youbut those aren't even my faves.... those would be:one daynumbersmyrrhtantalizedvolumesconstant in opalviolet towngrindchromiumsong in spacesealinedeadman's handvanishing man
>>127893491There is very little in common with the Whigs and Kilbey but they're good friends and I believe they've played some shows together. They're a very odd band marry nasty rock n roll and r&b so it makes sense they never caught on in the 90s. Too much testosterone. No clue if that sounds like something you might enjoy but I always thought they deserved more. Either way, Kilbey is a genius and I will quit rambling.
>>127896635the last time I caught The Church it was a double bill wih The Afghan Whigs. great show but place was hardly packed
>>127891490they are an ok band but never truly rises to being great. they are similar to seals & crofts in that every album and song sound almost exactly alike
>>127897434Not surprising. I think highly of both but they're clearly niche bands unfortunately. Both have a lot of great stuff that should have popped them into the mainstream.>>127898291I don't think we're listening to the same band. The Church have a very varied discography and have only gotten weirder with time.
>>127899342>I don't think we're listening to the same band.i do. objectively speaking all their albums are similar. just like seals & crofts. they have a very distinct sound.
the second greatest band of all time.
>>127900057I don't know what to tell you if you actually believe this
>>127891674Nick Cave absolutely fucking sucks.
>>127901521He's good but a bit overrated. A little of him goes along way. I prefer the Birthday Party.
>>127893757Violet town and grind are epic. Nice picks
>>127900094Who's #1? Flipper?
>>127899342>they're clearly niche bands unfortunatelytrue. I think it was also people cutting back on expenses as well - it was last year.
>>127901770The concert scene is grim if you're not a household name. It's rough out here. Very cool you got to see em though. I'm very jealous.
>>127891465Apparently they have a new album already in the can. No release date yet tho. Proper gents
>>127891465Just listened to pic related again for the first time in years. I had forgotten how great this one was. There are some absolutely beautiful and melancholy moments on it. A rare exception that justifies the runtime.
They are cumming to the us next summer. Are they worth seeing at this wise old age?
>>127902887Yes, I saw them in 2023 and they were great. Keep in mind, it's just Kilbey from the original lineup though.
>>127900416why are you confused? i didnt say they sounded like seals & crofts i said their careers are similar. both bands had a minor hit and all their music is very mellow and sounds the same
