The IT factor is actually pretty hard to define. Some things don't hurt, like a certain amount of exhibitionism and approachability. Musical intelligence, a listenable voice, the ability to dance and perform on stage are quite a rare combination. If a person has all that stuff the public doesn't care if they look a little like a horse, and it is seen as affirming that they take most of their clothes off and wiggle around.
