why did scots embrace TVU influences and became influential at this kind of music? was it the heroin connection?
>>127896863TVU released an unreleased album in 1985, and it got a bunch of press. The hardcore copying happens for the most part between 1985 and probably1996.
>>127896863>>127896913notice how the noisy guitars on Psychocandy sound like bagpipes at times? I suspected that a Dylan Carlson of Earth must be connected to Scotland because of his heroin use and the way his music sounds. Turns out he has Scottish grandparents and visited them often in his childhood.

>>127896863folk music tradition, scots were never really brought fully into feudalism and were basically always clan based even until quite recently. scots generally crazy and DIY and doing things on their own.Olympia WA and NZ other indie places had large scots migrant populations. In the US the appalachians/blue grass tradition was all scots as well. Music is just always a thing for them, particularly music that is more just playing with friends (and playing highly melodic music) and kind of non institutional. https://youtu.be/-nKktAZvTIgTo me the much more unusual connection is what the fuck does japanese have to do with it. Indie and the whole twee thing is basically scots migrant groups (olympia, NZ, and scotland of course) but then out of nowhere japan for some fucking reason. Could be some evolutionary selection thing for hill/mountain people that are isolated on islands so have very different selection pressures than say the french or chinese. (In the UK even more specifically northern people on the island around scotland had more influence from norwegian vikings while england since it was closer to the coninent was more danish vikings, hence the english are more mercantile and gay and scots are more wild.) That basically just covers the japs and UK.

>>127900790other countries had some drone stuff as well https://youtu.be/QMqpUgfKgPkfrench branle music rules this has a bagpipe and hurdy gurdy (this is from a priest who wrote a book and recorded traditional folk dance/music at the time) I think to me the more interesting thing is why it kind of went away much more in other places. I think it's probably a matter of the national government being able to centralize and squash folk traditions more in the 19th/20th century while scotland was still more independent. Fun fact did you know the rockefellers used mass education in the US to try to get rid of appalachian folk music, and would confiscate fiddles and other instruments and punish kids if were singing traditional music. In like 2 generations they were able to wipe out a huge chunk of the music (since it could only be passed down orally). I intend to read into the prussian and french centralization history (mass education was used to squash local dialects/culture and foster national identity and was the main point of it, music is a part of that) I imagine I'll encounter some stuff there but yeah music has interesting history.

They are Gaelic extraction though and there's a gradient sort of blending of culture going from the Scottish west coast down into the northern part of Ireland, same geology too, similar accents, Dal Raida
