>Better songwriting than Cobain
>Better voice than Cobain
>Similar style, just more refined / tasteful
Why are they generally not recognized as superior?
>>
op coming in hard with the bad takes
>>
never really thought they were similar to Nirvana, in fact I might say they're closer to the other of the Big 4 than Nirvana, great band though
>>
Because they (like all the other grunge giants) had a distinct sub style they occupied. In case of STP it was a heavy jazz influence

I think because that scene was so competitive and so full of talent. And the fact that Stone Temple pilots was seen as being a band that came along later and capitalized on the success of grunge. Core was released almost exactly one year after Nevermind, and yet at that time rock music was so stacked with talent STP was criticized as sounding too similar to Pearl jam and the other wrench bands.

STP what's the most musically complex of the grunge bands and played a big role in grunge segue into alternative. Their songwriters knew about jazz and could do more than make three or four rock progressions.

Weiland would sometimes sing similar to Cobain, but not grating
>>

Exactly. Better songwriting and more refined than Nirvana ever was
>>
they commited the crime of not being from Seattle while playing grunge

They weren’t really considered grunge and they aren’t really, they’re alt rock yeah and your dad would’ve known about them and not Alice in Chains

My dad is a grunge master and he was born in like 67

Ask him if he knew AiC. I remember STP getting way more radio play and AiC being more of an in the know band known by dudes in the know and they became more popular retrospectively
>>

Glad people get that STP being directly compared to Nirvana is silly. Also STP were great musicians, especially their bassist Robert DeLeo.

I think this was one of the absolute best rock songs of the 90s. Just incredible bass line, fantastic vocals, great guitar solo, and the drummer wrote the song.
>>
>>127898852
The bass in Big Empty is absolute 10/10.

All these 90s alt rock bands are overrated.

Tripping in a hole is a good song but man Weiland is a weirdo

>>Better voice than Cobain
Stp is the worst grunge band from that era
>>
>>127898004
Vocalist sounds like a combination of Cobain and staley, but underwhelming. Should've die sooner if they wanted the Nirvana clout

That's soundgarden, but without jazz

They are really, really good, but also somehow a singles band and didn't stand for anything.

My picks:
Big Empty
Kitchenware
Piece of Pie
Coma
Church

Wrong. Zero jazz in Soundgarden. Just unusual time sigs.

Whom do you rate?
