50 YEARS OF HAKO

Hako's first album, Tobimasu, released exactly 50 years ago, on October 1st, 1975. We're starting early, because as of now, it's already tomorrow in Japan.
Whether you're a fan, listen to her once in a while, only know her by name or just heard about her for the first time right now, come and celebrate together by listening to the album.

Later, I will post some nice things (webms, pictures, interesting facts), and even later something any fan should see, but most probably haven't, since it's pretty rare. So, don't let the thread die and stay tuned.

As a part of celebration, I took a picture of my humble Hakollection. It's still inhakomplete, as you can see, but I'm working on it. Don't hesitate to post your own, if you have one.
(I just noticed the bottom right book is upside down. I finally understand why they invented seppuku.)

Alright, some pictures from a book that contains photos of several female artist. It's called 五線譜に舞う女たち (Gosenfu ni Mau Onnatachi - Women Dancing on Staff Notation), and I'm going to focus on Hako, of course.

Frankly, if I had to pick one favourite music album, I'm not sure if I'd be able to choose between Tobimasu and Tsunawatari. They're both full of one-of-a-kind masterfully crafted pieces.
>>
>>
By the way, as much as Hako's songs can be enjoyed even if you don't understand a word in Japanese, it's good to remember that she's not only a brilliant singer, guitarist and composer, but also songwriter. To improve your experience further I highly recommend trying to understand her songs. Some lyrics can be googled, others you will find in comments under videos for specific songs and whole albums. Of course, you can also use translation tools like DeepL or whatever.
If you can't even find lyrics, which is possible, tell me the title and I'll post them.

A couple of nice things for you. These are so called "studio lives" or "radio lives". Hako plays and sings alone, with a small or without any audience at all, and the whole thing is broadcast over the radio. The quality of these is pretty bad, of course, since most likely they were recorded on cassettes by listeners at home. They were all aired between 1976 and 1982.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJVTI7sGuco
For some reason this one has only half of Sasurai. But fear not, someone uploaded the whole song separately, it's exactly the same recording, except complete: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgbuCrDFmHg - and if you're not really interested in listening to random low quality lives, at least listen to this, because it's especially amazing. I made myself an mp3 of it and have it in my every playlist.

2. Sasurai
3. Kazaguruma
4. Hashi Mukou no Ie
5. Sayonara no Kane
6. Taketonbo
7. Kage ga Mienai
8. Kibun wo Kaete
9. Tobimasu
10. Komori Uta
11. Otoko to Onna no Heya (Bonus Track)

Actually, now I noticed both YT links I posted have lists, one in the description, the other in the comments, so that should be easier to navigate.

There's always something lost in translation. Japanese generally doesn't translate well into other languages; and this is music, so basically poetry, making it even worse.
Once, I tried to translate a song for someone, but ended up explaining every line instead. It was a long and awkward process.

This is from Hako's book released in 1978, 真夜中に太陽が見たい (Mayonaka ni Taiyou ga Mitai - I Want to See the Sun in the Middle of the Night). It's mainly a collection of poems.
It has some more photos, but it's impossible to scan or even take pictures of them without ruining the book, unfortunately.

Alright, time to finally address this post: >>127918090
To the untrained eye, it may seem like random nonsense, however...

There is an anime called Chibi Maruko-chan. It's been running since 1995 (and before that another season from 1990 to 1992). There is a special episode that was aired on 7 June 2002, between episodes 379 and 380, hence known as episode 379.5, titled "Maruko Goes to a Folk Concert" (まる子、フォークコンサートへ行く). There, she meets a new character, a debuting female folk artist. Later, she meets her again and the girl visits Maruko's home. Yes, the girl's name is Yamasaki Hako, voiced by none other than Yamasaki Hako herself. During the episode she sings a song as well. Webm related.
If you'd like to take a look, I uploaded uhhh... a trailer for you. The episode was released on DVDs together with three other episodes, so the trailer is appropriately long, of course. The episode of interest begins at 00:47:55. I mean the trailer of the episode. It doesn't have subtitles and I have no idea if they can be downloaded somewhere. I mean, does anyone even bother translating trailers?
The filename is strange, because I was afraid Mediafire would delete the file, thinking it's the full episode or something, which obviously isn't the case.

Mediafire is generally a respectable site and shouldn't have any scammy ads, but using an adblocker won't hurt either.

Fun fact #1:
The ending for the special episode is Hako's... 呪い (Noroi - Curse).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1LGa5N3cqQ
What compelled the authors to use this one of all of her songs will remain a mystery. When I heard it first time, I already thought the song was haunted, and I didn't understand the lyrics at all. When you do, it's much worse ("driving nails into a straw doll", "straw doll shedding blood" and so on).

Now, here's a story. I once accidentally happened to visit a blog whose owner was at the time working at the TV station that broadcasted the episode. According to him, after it was aired, they got quite a few letters with complaints.
Apparently, the difference in tone and atmosphere between the cozy family anime and the eerie song was so big, that some people didn't understand that it was a part of the show and were scared, thinking it was some supernatural power at work. The fact that the movie Ring was released just a couple years prior probably explains this phenomenon.
>>
>>127919926
Fun fact #2:
I had to fight for over 2 (two, 二) years to have Hako added on MyAnimeList as a person and as a character. And even then, MAL jannies refused to add the episode itself, because according to them it's a part of the main show. Even though, like I said, it was aired between episodes 379 and 380, and despite the fact that everywhere else, in English or in Japanese, it's treated as a special episode. And now, her "Anime Staff Positions" says "Theme Song Composition (ED, ep 379)", which is literally untrue, because that's a completely different episode.
I guess jannies will be jannies no matter where you go.

Well, you're missing the third album, 藍色の詩 (Aiiro no Uta). I mainly listen to these five, plus some songs from the 6th (歩いて - Aruite) and 7th (茜 - Akane). The reason for this is that after the 5th album (人間まがい - Ningen Magai) her music gradually stops being folk and becomes pop.
There's a story connected to this, by the way. It involves the government using media to artificially kill folk music, since it was the "rebel music" at the time, also associated with student movements, strikes etc. Newspapers suddenly started saying that folk isn't "in" any more, that now the new, fresh, happy and cool music called pop that came from the glorious USA is what young people love; comedians made fun of folk artists in TV shows and so on.
And I'm saying this right after taking my pills, mind. But I digress.

And live albums:
ライブセット (Raibu Setto - Live Set) that contains the remastered first two live albums: ファーストライブ (Faasuto Raibu - First Live) and ライブII 歌在りて (Raibu II Uta Arite). The latter, or the second CD of the Live Set, is full of much less known songs that aren't on any studio album and even actual old folk songs not written by Hako... which is why I mostly listen to the First Live, or the first CD of the Live Set.
私の幸せ (Watashi no Shiawase)

But if you don't mind pop, you should explore further, of course.

Alright, listened to Hako for around 9 hours at work and while commuting. I'm literally full of Hako (in the figurative sense of the word "literally", of course, there is always room for more Hako).
I got back and just put on some Hako. Now a little bit of rest and since the opening ceremony is already finished, we can finally start the real celebration after a small warm-up.
For that, I'm going to post some newspaper clippings and wallpapers. My wallpapers aren't "good", but they're the best I managed to make. It's extremely hard to find a high quality picture of Hako. Still, maybe someone will find one they like.

According to this newspaper, at the time Hako weighed 34kg. This is due to health problems and her generally weak constitution. And that number is after a bit of a break from music and some kind of treatment (unclear, because the text is incomplete), before that it was 32kg, it says.
I don't know when this was published, but it might've been before the concert from the First Live album (once again, I recommend the Live Set version, by the way, since it's remastered), which was released in 1977. At the beginning of the concert, she says that she'll be singing for the first time after a couple-month-long break, so that would fit.

...this one is from 1978, when she was 21 years old, and it says (bottom left) "154cm and 31kg".
From eyewitness testimonies, I learned that when she stepped out on the stage, she looked like a "little girl with a big guitar" and that it was "hard to tell whether she was carrying the guitar or the other way around". And that the contrast between her frail figure and her powerful voice was baffling.

Alright, the preparations are complete. First, listen to the story.

Long ago, long before our times, around the year of 1975, in a land now known as Japan, there was a person. It was an ordinary Hakonnoisseur, just like you and me, our Bröther in Hako, you might say. Or perhaps was it a Sïster in Hako? We will probably never know, so let's call them the Sïbling in Hako.
That Sïbling in Hako of ours was an Original Hakonnoisseur, blessed with the opportunity to listen to Hako from the very beginning and see her live during concerts. And that Sïbling in Hako, imagine this, owned a photo camera. As a true Hakonnoisseur, they knew what the true purpose of the device was. That is, to take pictures of Hako, of course.
Many years later, our Sïbling had passed on to find their peace in Hako. The relics landed in the treasuries of their inheritors, who - ignorant of the true worth of what was bestowed upon them - decided to dispose of them by the way of trade.
Thus, after long years, the treasures finally made their way into the hands of the Sïbling's true successors. That is, us. What I now hold with reverence in my hand are three pictures of Hako, not from a magazine, not from a book and not from an album. Three original photographies, never published anywhere.
They're nearly 50 years old, so I cleaned them as best as I could without risking hurting them in any way, then scanned them and cleaned them again in the Shop of Photo. And now, in the next three posts, I will present them to you. Two of them I already showed to a small audience of another board, but left the last one for this very occasion.
Yes, you are allowed to save them. In fact, it's your duty.

GRANDE FINALE

Can't imagine a more perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album Tobimasu than with this album here.

It's called 飛びます・・・17歳 (Tobimasu...Jyuunanasai - Flying...17 Years Old). Released in 2001, only on CDs and in a very limited number of copies, it contains four songs recorded in 1975 for the very first album that didn't find their way onto it:

>許されざる恋 (Yurusarezaru Koi - Forbidden Love) and 男と女の部屋 (Otoko to Onna no Heya - The Room of a Man and a Woman)
These are the same versions as the ones included in re-releases of the first two albums, Tobimasu and Tsunawatari. Nothing big, since we already know them.

>飛びます (Tobimasu - Flying)
This is not the same version as on the album of the same title. It's most likely Hako's original composition that later, arranged for more instruments, became the song we know. This one has only one guitar, played by Hako herself, and it's a bit slower. My guess is that this is the earliest available, or perhaps even the very first, studio recording of Hako's song. And it's very good.
Fun fact: there is one change in the lyrics.
Instead of "自分の命でしょう" (jibun no inochi deshou) in the last verse, it's "この命でしょう" (kono inochi deshou). Which changes literally nothing.
You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPcPovCyXVY

>捨てた友達 (Suteta Tomodachi - Abandoned Friend)
Now this is THE big thing. If you, like me, especially like Hako's old style, you just got a "new" old song. There is only one version and it's only available on this CD.
The problem is, as far as I know, and I checked thoroughly in more than one language more than one time, you can neither listen to it nor download it anywhere in the internet, unless something's changed since the last time I tried. The only way to listen to it seems to be to buy a used copy, which is what I did, of course. Well, sucks, but it is what it is.

Now, this is completely unrelated, but I zipped and uploaded something for you. The archive contains uhhh... promotional materials, pictures, lyrics for Suteta Tomodachi (in Japanese, but I bet DeepL will do a better job than I would anyway), you know, random stuff like this. You may get the wrong idea, because the file is big, so let me emphasize: this absolutely does NOT contain the full album in flac format.
The filename is strange, because I was afraid Mediafire would delete the file, thinking it's the full album in flac format or something, which obviously isn't the case.

If by some strange twist of fate you manage to find and listen to this album right after reading my post, let me know what you think.

That's a monumental understatement, but it's hard to disagree either way.

This, but I already have it. I mean, you can upload it for others, maybe someone prefers mp3s over flacs.

if you have the flac version please upload because I didn't see it on jpopsuki or soulseek

Well, I already posted everything I wanted to post, so now I may as well post something I didn't plan to.
The Live Set album was mentioned a couple of times ITT. Again, it's a set that consists of the First Live and Live II albums remastered + 4 bonus songs.
You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJKA2C_1LpNtjyjNLLdoxKTCi5azZMpu8
And you can also download uhhh promotional materials (in flac format, of course) here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/94sdvuoaiw5tkac/

Aside from live versions of songs from studio albums, there are some amazing songs that, for an unknown reason, never got their studio versions. Out of the whole Live Set I especially recommend checking out these:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcwt1HQjZIU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW72HlTQRY0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn63Neh46Dk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yys6HCCSrnc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq0X-foLbYo - this one is an actual traditional song of fishermen.

As a bonus, another live-only song, Watashi no Shiawase, originally from the album Watashi no Shiawase; this upload seems to be from a best of compilation album, but it's the same version:

In case the thread dies overnight, see you in 50 years for the 100th anniversary.
Or, actually, Tsunawatari will be 50 years old in May. Hako was releasing at least one album a year for ~14 years, so that's a lot of anniversaries for years to come. But this one, for Tobimasu, is special, because it's the beginning. Plus, I won't have enough material.
Stay strong in Hako.

I didn't expect the thread to live so long. I guess I need to take responsibility then. I'll try to do something and post it later.

IU should play her in the biopic

So, now that literally every Hakonnoisseur can listen to the "new" old song Suteta Tomodachi from the previously ultra-rare "Tobimasu... 17Sai" album (see: >>127929138 >>127929148 >>127929445 ) it's time to make sure everyone can also understand it properly.
Neither Japanese nor English is my first language, but it should at least be enough to tell what the song is about.
Note: Shiro works as both a male and a female name, and there's nothing that could be used to guess Shiro's gender, so at first I used "(s)he", but it looks bad, so I changed it to "he". If you prefer, it can be a "she".

>捨てた友達 - Suteta Tomodachi - Abandoned Friend
What are you doing right now, I wonder, my friend Shiro
I can recall the delightful little bells, skipping about

I was looking back at Shiro playing on a wide riverbank, as I started running
Innocently scampering around, not realising that he would be alone

Do you remember still the day when I found you
So small, you were sitting beside a stray dog that got cold

I gave it some milk, hugged you tightly, "don't give up, don't give up", I cried
I always looked forward to eating leftover bread from school together with you

Your house isn't there any more, let's say goodbye to happy memories
As I packed my things, you were unusually cheerful and clingy

Alone, too, I will live on after all, I'm not going to shed tears
Without looking back I ran, listening to the fading sound of bells

Alone, too, I will live on after all, I'm not going to shed any tears
Without looking back I ran, listening to the fading sound of bells

I found her via Junko’s telephone song (used as a meme by Metokur). I guess Hako was one of top recommendations.

Then like not even 2 weeks later a guy at work was listening to her and I went ‘hey that’s Hako (not sure if I remembered the full name, maybe)’ and I looked like an inhuman encyclopedia of everything music, but (once again) really it was luck/coincidence

I only met one person outside of /mu/ who knew her (not counting thousands of people I told about her), but it was just on another board, never irl.
