did they forget to mix the bass?
>>
>>127942366
this is metal, not funk. "bass" is overrated and not really necessary. you can hardly hear that shit in most metal albums anyways. if anything, its the annoying overly-trebly tone of the instruments, namely lars' plastic drum sound.
>>
>>127942366
No OP, your headphones are just shit. This is an audiophile album and requires good equipment.

this comment would probably be taken more seriously if AJFA wouldn't sound like ass

I got the cd and tore my speakers apart thinking they were blown but it was just the assfart sound of it.

No, Lars just fucked up his hearing by playing loud gigs without adequate protection. The way auditory masking works means low frequencies obscure high frequencies, so if you have bad high-frequency hearing it genuinely sounds better without the bass. Harman International found the same preference for reduced bass in older listeners.

>you can hardly hear that shit in most metal albums anyways
sounds like a bad thing if you ask me
>>
whoa holy crap anon you're right there is no bass! i don't think anyone has ever noticed this ever on this 35 year old album, this changes everything!

4:20 onwards is a good example why bass means a lot, especially when the guitars both play high notes
Iron Maiden figured that out a decade before Metallica
>>
>>127942366
why dont you get an AI to get the bass parts faggot
>>
>>127942366
Lars was butthurt by the demise of his buttbuddy Cliff so he decided to turn down the bass in retaliation of Jason.>>127942383
>"bass" is overrated and not really necessary. you can hardly hear that shit in most metal albums anyways
Look at the (((death))) and (((black))) metal enjoyer everybody. Come and look at the fucking idiot.
>>
>>127942592
No one did that. This is literally the album that made them popular, no one had a problem with it
>>
>>127942905
no what really happened was they knew people would focus on the bass of the new guy replacing their fallen hero leaving it open to criticism. can't criticise it if you can't hear it. smartest move from their end

>>127942418
True you actually can hear it a lot more than people say, but mostly just E string plucks. I also think One might have been mixed differently since it was a single
>>
>>127942383
No, bass really is necessary. I like music to sound thick and crunchy and guitars just can't do that like a bass can.
>>
>>127942366
From what I understand, the sound engineer suggested that they emphasize the bass, and they thought it would be really cool and edgy and anti-establishment if they removed the bass for that reason alone. I hate gen X so fucking much.
>>
>>127945492
ah yes, you're a faggot
>>
>>127942366
It sounds perfect without the bass if you ask me. It's a unique sounding album.
>>
lars wanted his drums to sound as sharp as they do, james wanted his guitars to sound as beefy as they do, and to achieve that they had to sacrifice the bass. the rough mix is on youtube and you can hear the bass, but you can also hear the difference in the drums and guitars
>>
>>127942366
Its metal. It doesn't need bass
>>
Exclusively listen to bass enhanced versions of the album. Sounds wayyy better
>>
>>127946221
there's like a million them - how do i know which one is right or best? is there a definitive version that the consensus agrees upon?
>>
I just bought the remaster version. Its the version as Lars intended
>>
>>127946736
>Its the version as Lars intended
so the same thing then
>>
>>127946614
ironically this guy doing a bass cover of the whole album is probably the best
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vumrar1k928
there is a version that uses the guitar hero stems to add jason's tracks to the album, but guitar hero didn't include like two or three songs, so those ones are still just attempts at remixing the track to try and bring the bass out

Here's the mixing tech talking about it
>>
>>127942366
Lars and James wanted the drums and guitars to be as loud as possible, so the bass had to go, then Lars demanded it to be lowered even more, presumably just to fuck with Jason. Nowadays they blame it on their hearing being fucked cause they were doing the mix during the middle of a tour, but the engineer is on record saying that he could’ve gotten a mix done where everything worked out.

It was always addition by subtraction.

Steve Thompson was kind of a chad back then, should’ve told Lars to fuck off and done the mix the way he wanted

>hurr durr metal doesn’t need bass
It’s literally where the “heavy” sound comes from. On something properly mixed like picrel you can hear the entire fq spectrum moving together. You feel the bass in your stomach the kick drum hits you in your chest. Without that info you just hear everything in your head, it’s weak, hollow, fatiguing.
>>
>>127943151
>They made their album sound like shit to own the critics
Sounds like something they'd do. Also it never made sense that they were so broken up over Cliff. Their most talented former-member had already formed Megadeth at that point.
>>
>>127942366

It’s symbolic. There’s no bass because Cliff died and the whole album is about dealing with that loss.
>>
>>127942383
so true thats why I love bands without bassists like Hella
