lars wanted his drums to sound as sharp as they do, james wanted his guitars to sound as beefy as they do, and to achieve that they had to sacrifice the bass. the rough mix is on youtube and you can hear the bass, but you can also hear the difference in the drums and guitars

Nowadays they blame it on their hearing being fucked cause they were doing the mix during the middle of a tour, but the engineer is on record saying that he could’ve gotten a mix done where everything worked out.

You feel the bass in your stomach the kick drum hits you in your chest. Without that info you just hear everything in your head, it’s weak, hollow, fatiguing.
