ynr rolling stone magazine said st vincent was the 25th greatest guitar player in history
>>
I love Annie
>>
>>127947593
Rolling Stone hasn't been a serious magazine in 30 years.
>>
still makes me kek after all these years

>>
I like her pedalboard
>>
>>127948003
Best I can do is make it a little smaller for ya.
>>
>>127948124
That works too.
>>
>>127947593
grim
>>
unironically she plays better than hendrix. you are seething about no 25 when talentless hacks like jimmy page are in the top 5
>>
>>127948696
It was never about skill. If it were they would have at least included Steve Morse. Rolling Stone's picks in all their lists are a mix of popularity/influence (hemce Page being so high) and enough controversial picks to drive traffic to their dying publication. Annie at 25 is one of those controversial picks.
>>
thats an exaggeration but she totally has/had the potential to make guitar popular again, she should've made some kind of guitar hyper pop fusion but since her s/t she's just been making albums that sound older than her best works and not really innovating like she used to, still All Born Screaming was better than the last couple
>>
>>127948696
>jimmy page
opinion discarded, he isn't the fastest player but nobody made iconic catchy and well produced riffs like he did, he has more bangers than anyone from the 60s or 70s and even beyond that the way he layered a song like Ten Years Gone is unmatched especially in the genre
>>
>>127948113
every band I ever see live has a pedalboard with one (or more) huge pedal on it like those and I never use anything like that, makes me wonder if I'm missing something crucial
>>
>>127947593
Rolling stone has been out of touch for years. Supposedly basic bitchp pop Taylor was number 8 in a ranking.
Lot of guitarists are way better.
>>
>>127948909
It's just some equalizer and synth like filter
>>
>>127948909
Guitar synth and an EQ?
I guess you can make some cool noises with the guitar synth although I always found them gimmicky.

Think that was bad? Same list had Tom Morello at 18.
>>
Strange Mercy is a really good album. The 2016 ideological schism mindbroke the entire world so I know that us “based” dudes aren’t allowed to like a Jewish lesbian, but I think she did some really interesting stuff.
>>
Her signature guitar is awesome. I like her first album.
>>
>>127948696
I think youre retarded
>>
>>127951083
I think it's ugly. That's true for most signature guitars though.

Extra poser pedalboard, arranged by some hipster dude for her 100%

Who cares? It obviously isn't true. Shes still breddy gud and I like most of her records. Was great the one time I caught her live.
>>
>>127948909
The huge pedal is usually a Strymon in those cases, I think.
>>
They just throw her in there for the sake of feminism.
>>
>>127948696
lol name one song of hers that everyone else knows
>>
>>127948113
100 percent the only pedals actually being used are the JHS and the even ride, those old reddit pedals are so noisy they’re useless in a love setting
>>
>>127952891
she is too alt and experimental for you. go and listen to your nursery rhyme music maker jimmy page
>>
I enjoy her music, especially the earlier stuff, and she has a unique style of lead guitar lines, but top 25? Eh.. I’d say top 100 maybe. Is Kaki King ranked higher by Tolling Gonads magazine?

The largest pedal I have on my board is the Behringer BM-13 12 stage phaser and it’s worth the real estate it takes up. Based on the moog 12 stage phaser that goes for thousands of dollars these days. They’re coming out with a Moog delay clone next and it’s going to be hard to pass up but if I get and decide to use it, I’m going to have to look into building a custom pedal board ala Paul Gilbert.
>>
>>127948872
Guitar will never be popular again because zoomers and Gen alpha do not have the attention span to learn to play instruments. Instrument based live music is dead in 2025 like Opera was in 1925.
>>
>>127953302
eh thats not entirely accurate, its certainly not the cultural force that it used to be but theres definitely still a place for it
i see guitar in the same place as piano is. It’s still relevant just kinda used in niche places musically as opposed to synthesizers

Rolling Stone lists are a combo of trolling and DEI. They stopped being a music mag a long time ago - well, and music stopped being good a while ago.

Strange Mercy is a great album, she fell off completely after that for me. She could play and sing, but went off the deep end after and nothing has hit the same

that was part of her appeal, she's not a bad guitar player at all, but her new electric shit is awful and has ruined any chance of zoomers having any interest in her

Masseduction [4AD, 2017]
Jack Antonoff or no Jack Antonoff, pop-tailored synth sonics do not a pop album make, and artist avowals to the contrary, being personal requires more than the will to do so--it takes a certain kind of talent, one of the few Annie Clark may not possess. Big choruses you find yourself humming? But of course. Alluring lyrics that walk the tightrope of legibility? She passes that test. So there's not a track here that isn't manifestly memorable and intelligent. What's missing is the more amorphous and lowbrow aesthetic quality called accessibility. It's certainly possible to imagine fans in the hundreds of thousands aspiring to Clark's latest self-presentation. But the smaller number who identify with her are deluding themselves--she's a genius and they're not, and she's proud of it. So admiring every song though I do, I warm to precisely two: the one hooked to her "I can't turn off what turns me on," an endangered principle or is it compulsion in this sociosexual moment, and the imploring "please"s moaned by the putative top in the sadie-maisie cosplay tale "Savior." B+
>>
>>127959816
this list is literally just "every girl guitarist we can think of"
>>
>>127962363
it's also precisely 50 out of the 250 full list, which means they had a quota
>>
>>127960223
marry me also, i dont know why she replaced jazz/chamber pop for meme electronica

*annie plays a couple strums on her guitar in an atypical way and different chord structure than the dweeb virgins listening to her have ever heard on their lives. and then shes hailed as an amazing guitar player.

yet, why was there never a mainstream female Eddie Van Halen, for example?
>>
we don't need any more EVHs
>>
>>127963208
you're missing my point. there are no flamboyantly unique female guitar players like evh. it was merely an example
>>
>>127962607
This is why i rarely visit /mu/
>>
>>127962607
Morello is a bonafide shredder. Just listen to Know Your Enemy. He just plays himself down.
But that is true in general. Annie is creative with her sound and has her own style. Just not one of the greatest. She's great at being herself. No need to put her on the same level as people who have an absolute mastery above almost all other human beings. This shit is so dumb.

idk about 25th best of all time but she's still a good guitarist i think that she's maybe like slightly out of the top 100 though

never heard her, is she?
if not, where does she rank?

or is this like how suddenly from 2020-2023 "Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles" became the #1 Film of All Time on every list, because it was a good film with a politically active (feminist) non-white (Jewish) non-male (female) director?
>>
>>127962607
>Whether they’re top 30 is controversial
How so?
Unless you compile your list based on something other than influence and originality.
A technical proficiency list would leave off a lot of great players, including almost all the old blues players and many rockers.
>>
>>127967893
are you really disputing Morello is a great guitarist?
(i don't know shit about Rolling Stone so maybe I read your comment wrong)
