808s didn't popularize autotune but it did perhaps legitimize the artistry of its then contemporary overuse. It took a very annoying trend of the time and actually found a way to make it sound like it added to the identity of the work rather than just a crutch (though seeing as Kanye can't sing, it certainly is still that too).
