CAGED is ok for learning chords but I would avoid it for scales, especially if you want to play fast. Stick to 3 nps. You won’t find shredders using CAGED for much, apart from some fretboard visualization and basic triads.

That sounds like a you problem frankly. I had a squier jazzmaster for the longest time which got me real, real far. >weren't rick basses like this
somewhat similar in that they have something going over the strings, yes, but it's only part of the magnet (see pic related). there isn't a whole other pickup up top like in my concept.
I find it hard to believe nobody had this idea before me. sure the whole contraption would get in the way, but I'd expect to find at least some old forum post discussing something of the sort. maybe info that someone already tried it in the 60s or 70s and deemed it pointless. perhaps it's that current day search engines just suck.
If I could play guitar I'd order a cheap Harley-Benton or Squier, some wire and a soldering iron, 3d print a pickup holder and try to put the idea into practice straight away, but as I got my first guitar literally this week there's no point in doing it yet. it'd be like coming up with and wanting to test a new kind of tyre while you can't even drive a car.

> The S6 (S for Split Coil) is a humbucking split coil pickup that utilizes a magnetic yoke arrangement, as used on multiple classic string through pickups. The magnets connect to upper and lower steel plates creating a uniform magnetic field in the string zone, which allows for free string movement since there is no net magnetic force on the strings.

it's interesting, and the function description of "sounds clear just like a single coil while being humbucking" sounds like just about like the most ideal possible outcome. but from what I understand that there above the string is a steel plate, not another coil, and they achieve the humbucking by splitting the pickup into smaller 3-string coils one of which is reverse wound to cancel out the 60 cycle hum when both are connected. a very elegant solution, I'm guessing those similarly split (but otherwise conventional looking, no plate ontop) pickups I've seen on basses serve a similar purpose.
but from that means it's still different. for reference, here's my highly professional sketch again. literally 2 single coils facing each other, the top one being a repurposed middle pickup (which from my understanding tend to be wound in reverse) for ease of attempting at home.
I'm not saying that it necessarily is a good idea, just a silly "what if" I'm surprised I cannot find mentioned at any point.

>>127952915
Nothing's stopping you from trying go for it! Having the bottom pick up recessed seems like a good idea. Maybe attach on the bridge as well rather than neck side so it doesn't get in the way of picking or strumming. I suggest getting 2 cheap identical guitars, say 2 firefly strats. Have one as the test model, the other to modify so you can A/B test it. Auditory memory is very short, around 5 second and the timbral information dies iirc. Best to have it plugged into an interface with 2 inputs so you can clearly hear what your mod did.
