taylor swifts problem is that shes nowhere near as poetic as she thinks she is. her career exploded when she switched to pop music with red and 1989, where she churned out inoffensive, catchy music that didnt anything deeper than the odd clever, memorable line (darling im a nightmare dressed like a daydream, etc). during covid, she released two albums of music that, while still ultimately pop, were a very different vibe for her. experimenting with different styles, and most notably, the lyrics were a lot better-written and deeper than people were used to. these albums one a shitload of awards and everyone praised her and started lauding her as a fantastic writer.the problem is she didnt fucking write those albums. they were written in collaboration with bon iver, aaron dessner, and joe alwyn. and based on whats happened since, its safe to assume they did the heavy lifting with the lyrics. all that praise got to her head, and she started seeing herself as a master lyricist and "poet".but everything shes put out since, without those co-writers, has been aggressively mid. she did two albums with jack antonoff (margaret qualleys gay husband) producing, and they sounded like the same generic slop all pop has been because antonoff produces all pop music now. worst offender was the tortured poets department, THIRTY songs of the same bad lana del rey impression with extremely uninspired production and lyrics, despite being her most sincere attempt to own her "poet" identity ("you know how to ball, i know aristotle")now shes gone back to her old producers and made an album of perfectly serviceable pop melodies that could do numbers on the radio, if not for the fact shes still doing this "poet" larp and writing the most dogshit lyrics imagineable. if shes just gone back to 1989-level "i broke up with a man and im angry and its not any deeper than that" itd probably do numbers. but instead we get >I can make deals with the devil because my dick's bigger
