Deep Purple in the 80s (for the brief time Blackmore was back) was underrated.

Cinderella was just AC/DC if the guy could actually sing well. Blew out his voice tho. Scream/singing is really harsh on the throat. plus all the coke and booze of the 80s.

Cinderella, Skid Row, Dokken and Ratt are all underrated. Some of the hair metal bands were good I like some of these bands better than some of the grunge bands.

the bad thing about the format is how record labels forced them to write two songs: power ballad and shred guitar rocker about partying or rocking out. it was a very one dimensional format.

GNR didn't need to do it. They kind of sucked later with the ballads, rather than early on.

Back at the time people who wanted DIY would listen to alt rock like REM and friends, glam metal was watered down into a scripted bunch of cliches early on for MTV/radio play and the audience for the music was mostly girls.

you think grunge also didn't very early on become commercial mall music for 15 year old girls?

I won't say Nevermind or Core weren't very slick albums but all of the major grunge bands had completely unique sounds and all did something different. That wasn't the case with hair metal, by '86 it was absolutely template rock and all of the bands sounded the same, dressed the same, wrote the same songs etc.

in the early days of 82-84 glam metal was much more...well...metal but the industry quickly figured out how to buff it out and make it sellable to girls. that included making the power ballad the lead single every time.

btw Poison's 86 debut is a treat because it was rushed out the door and they didn't have the time to apply the usual 80s post-processing to it so it's completely raw garage rock jams

bro they only got famous because of a power ballad... sweet child. power ballads were their only hits

template music was starting to become a thing in the 80s, also affected was country when that George Strait drawl became a cliche every singer used while prior to the 80s they all sounded unique.

That's still a rocker masquerading as a ballad. Especially the jam at the end.
The typical hair metal ballad never had a timeless riff either.

like most bands with a heavily female audience they never got any cred or respect
