Thoughts on Ween? I think their style of rock is pretty meh but they managed to create a few classics over the years.
>>
>>127981098
Sorta similar to the Dead where they're extremely polarizing. You either love them or hate them
>>
>>127981098
deeply evil, i dont know what it is about them but they've got some kind of skeletons, maybe a pact? I dont know what it is about their music, but i cannot listen to it in good faith.
>>
>>127981254
>they've got some kind of skeletons, maybe a pact?

trust me that's a rabbit hole you don't wanna go down
>>
>>127981272
Tell me more.
>>

Love Ween. One of the greatest rock bands ever.
>>127981254
I mean, they claim to worship a demon god lol. This isn't even obscure, it's Ween 101.
>Ween plays gospel music. Ween is here to spread the word of their Lord the demon-god BOOGNISH. BOOGNISH appeared first to Ween in 1984 when Dean and Gene were 14 years old. They (Dean and Gene) were not friends, and they shared little in common. Upon the first sighting, BOOGNISH communicated to them what had to be done and later that day Ween recorded onto tape the holy holy picture that HE had painted for the two boys. He has since appeared only twice, once to punish Gene for trying to leave the band. The other time Ween will not discuss. Since the apparition first appeared, Ween have recorded (legitimately) over 1000 songs, and they have not even yet begun to accomplish their task of spreading HIS name on THEIR earth.
- Quote from the GodWeenSatan CD case
I have no idea if this is what >>127981272
was referring to though
>>
>>127981583
was not aware of this, that deity must carry some serious weight to be captured in the music without this foreknowledge. I reflect on listening to burzum, etc, other considerably "unholy" or "demonic" music, and they've never given me the same kind of discomfort, besides maybe just some eyeroll edginess here and there.

ask not why the demon helps, ask what it will seek in payment.
>>
i love wEEn desu i hated that shit at first fr i did get it ,thye have so many die hard fans i was likew wtf but then i lsite n2 god ween and ir a;llll made since givem a shot they know sometihing
>>
>>127981098
they're one of those bands where you need to balance any claims about their "significance" against the fact that half of their work is just genre exploration or doing bits (see also: mr. bungle)
Personally I love bands like that but I can see how it doesn't appeal to everyone
>>
>>127981098
Their weird tunes are always more fun than the generic ones, I skip those
>>
For some reason I used to think they were two gay guys in a relationship together
>>
>>127981956
Calm down, anon.
>We created this deity, Mickey and I, in 1986. And we called it the Boognish, and that was our little dude.
>I set the groundwork that it was a demon and a god. Yin and yang. The forces of good and darkness in all the universe. That’s what the Boognish represents.
They talk about it as if it's real because it's a meaningful symbol to them, but it's also clearly something they made up and have embellished the legend of.

>>
>>127981098
they've got a few good songs but i don't usually come back to the band
>>
>>127981098
I used to love them until I discovered Royal Trux, which have more variety and push boundaries a lot harder. Quebec isn't one of their finest records anyway, it's full of fillers and the track sequencing kinda sucks. Pod and Mollusk are their real masterpieces.
>>
>>127981098
Good band but overrated
>>
Quebec is alright and they put out some good songs around the turn of the Millennium. They put on enjoyable concerts, and Dean is a very good guitarist/gene is a talented vocalist.

What good is pushing boundaries when it sounds like shit. Like cool this architect expects you to call his pile of rubble and broken glass a building
>>
I love ween.
When I was a highschooler, I thought their lolrandom phase was super cool but as I age I enjoy the later half of their work.
They are great live also.
They are probably my favorite band if I had to pick only one.
>>
Their b-sides and rarities are really good on average.

Pure Guava [Elektra, 1992]
It's to the half-credit of these Bucks County wise guys that the studio amenities of their major-label debut impel them toward fucked-up sounds, which come hard, rather than fucked-up songs, which they write without thinking (and how). But I don't buy the claim that they'll do anything for a laugh. Ever since they went on about pussy for nine minutes (good idea) in a Princey blues-minstrel drawl (bad one), I've assumed they were the kind of rec-room gigglefritzes who enjoy a good nigger joke when they're sure their audience is sophisticated enough to enjoy it. And to be perfectly honest, I don't hear one of those here. C+
>>
>>127985928
>I've assumed they were the kind of rec-room gigglefritzes who enjoy a good nigger joke when they're sure their audience is sophisticated enough to enjoy it

What did Cuckgau mean by this?
>>
>>127986027
black people aren't allowed to have impressions done of them because muh slavery muh blackface. or whatever nonsense white liberals believe.
>>
>>127981098
Ween is pure joy
>>
>>127986077
Whats funny is Ween never used the n-word they did do "racist" accents and impressions on some of their songs like Buenas Tardes Amigo but not really ever of black people except their Prince pastiche song, and even then they were obsessed with Funk, Soul and R&B and definitely not racists at all
>>
>>127986027
Glib speaker says something stupid. Who would have thought
>>
>>127986249
considering their drummer is black you are probably right
though they do get cheeky some times
>>
>>127986313
It's cliche at this point but the 90s were a different time and the "make fun of everyone equally" ethos really was in full effect. A lot of 12 Golden Country Greats is them making fun of rural rednecks (although there are some quality sincere country songs on that record too)

Like >>127986388 pointed out Ween just came from a different time when people were more easy-going you could say. But also ween is significant in the sense that if you pay attention to their music they are essentially harbingers of doom. Their music is about the end of the party, the end of culture. The Boognish gave them a message and they sent it out to the world. The good times are coming to an end, enjoy them while you still can

>>127987734
Interesting take, I agree a bit on that they remind me of dark jesters sometimes. And creation is destruction, and vice versa id say
>>
>>127981583
are people's brains actually just broken by braindead conspiricy bullshit or what? Am i too old to get the in joke?
>>
>>127983369
basically what he said, great musicians, nothing revolutiionary but enjoyable to listen to and had a great couple albums with the mollusk and quebec. Decent guys all around
>>
Quebec is a 10, White Pepper is an 8, rest is trash
>>
>>127989273
>rest is trash

Even The Mollusk and their live albums? I can understand not liking their early lo-fi stuff but i find it interesting you like both those albums but nothing else
>>
>>127989316
I haven't heard the live albums but I hate Mollusk as well as Chocolate & Cheese
>>
just broke up with my girlfriend her favourite band was ween we used to listen to them together. her favourite song and album was help me scrape the mucus from my brain and 12 country greats. she made me a birthday card with the lyrics to don’t want it (my favourite ween song) written on it. i’m crying now

You should listen to Frank and "Piledriver" from their collaboration album with the Boredoms called Z-Rock-Hawaii

Ween hands down has the best songs about food. No wonder they suffered such brutal twink deaths

Not sure why people try to call them revolutionary or innovative / call people out for calling them that is a thing. Good art doesn't necessarily mean it breaks new grounds and if anything their whole style is retreading old ground and doing it with their own personal spin on it. They're one of my favorite bands and are pretty great at making melodies
>>
I have only heard Mollusk and Quebec. Some of the songs were great, but I don't like the jokey vaudeville shit. Should I listen to their other stuff?
>>
>>127995593
I remember my days of just Quebec and the Mollusk. I liked the stuff but not enough to get into their other stuff, that all changed when I decided to try their first album which completely changed my view on Ween, they're now a favorite band of mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugh0MhM-_Wg

It's most likely just a "spaghetti monster" type attempt at humor which was common at the time. Are you gonna say that haruhi fans in their prime were worshipping a demon? (The answer is yes, because haruhi is a fucking bitch who needs to be crucified)
>>
>>127981098
what classics? ocean man is their only hit
>>
>>127987264

Ocean Man wasn't a hit technically their only big hit was Push th' Little Daisies

Are any of Claude’s other projects worth checking out?

Does anyone know one of their songs that has some sort of lyric that goes

>>
>>127995930
Ironically enough they hated Zappa
>>
>>127996249
They seem like Zappa wannabes.
>>
>>127996295
Zappa was a talented tryhard prick of a human being and it shows in his music
Ween is basically the polar opposite in every regard and it shows in their music
I genuinely do not see the similarity
>>
>>127981098
I like their spongebob stuff.

>>
>>127996249
Have they ever gone in more depth about that? I never really got that, being a huge Ween and Zappa fan simultaneously. Of course they're very different musicians but it seems like much of what they like to do was done by Zappa in a somewhat more primitive way.
>>
>>127996295
They're different sides of the same coin. Ween isn't really skilled in technical ability but knew how to make good songs. Zappa may have been able to know how to make good songs but he was more focused on making everything a wonderfully sculpted piece of shit. Ween parodied out of love for what they parodied whereas Zappa is essentially a Wojak artist who can't show an earnest side and can only smugly looked down on everything else
>>
>>127996305
They both do noisy rock, psych stuff, and corny ass music hall joke music. Their personalities don't really factor for me. It's not like I know them personally.
>>
>>127996417
>Ween isn't really skilled in technical ability

Dean is a pretty great guitarist and Gene has a incredible vocal range
>>
>>127996467
NTA but you can hear the difference in attitude when listening to their stuff.
