P4k review just dropped.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl/

Thoughts?
>>
my thoughts are i drink alcohol and goon to charli xcx tummy pics
>>
>>127981317
It sounds just like all her other albums and sabrina carpenter. Not sure why everyone is tripping out.
>>
>>127981317
Very staid and safe review. Says literally nothing that you wouldn't see said in a thread here, just way more politely. Typical modern day p4k.
>>
>>127981356
Because its all fucking garbage and people are sick of it
>>
>>127981382
So you think they should've been meaner? Or nicer?
>>
>>127981317
Is the song with "Ophelia" in the title on this album? I heard 1 minute of that trash on the radio driving to work. The lyrics sounded like something a 10 year old could've come up with.
>>
>>127981356
>>127981408
This review is a major turning point. I don't think people understand. This marks the end of poptimism. The culture is about to change dramatically (for the better) in the next five years.
>>
>>127981409
They should try to actually understand the songs and the lyrics
>>
>>127981409
Not necessarily meaner, but if they're going to give it under a 6 anyway, they might as well say something with some bite to it instead of a wishy-washy "it's a silly album, but it should be the only pop album you need (5.9 out of 10 btw)". They're willing to say they don't like it by the rating, but they're not actually willing to *say* it.

That enough for you?
>>
>>127981457
See this is just an incredibly bad faith take. If you actually went into this album with an open mind and actually tried to understand the lyrics. You'd realise what a profound and complex song writer she truly is

using Christgau's rating scale this should be a C minus

delusional!? It's just a fact that Taylor Swift's music is high art packaged in an accessable way. Life of a showgirl is amazing, just objectively speaking. Like your purposely trying to not understand her but your not cool just acting insane. She's amazing and your bein trash but like on purpose.

Taylor Swift has just stopped Sabrina from releasing a new album next year. I don't know what to think of that.
>>
>>127981408
>people are sick of it
the new Tay album is setting records for sales & streaming. album release party movie won at the box office this weekend. It is, by all objective measures a success.

Subjectively it's been a very mixed bag, and it is a mediocre 3.5/5 album, but II feel badly for those of you who have to cope by cherrypicking the bad reviews. "if it's a bad review, then they're based; if it's good then it's an industry shill".

>>127981424
>buh buh poptimism is dead! this is the turning point where people will stop liking what I don't like!
thoughts and prayers. cope and seethe.
>>
>>127981317
>>127983305
also, friendly reminder that there's a whole lotta screeching about p4k when they like things /mu/ doesn't like:
Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple = P4k 10
TPAB by Kendrick = P4k 9.3
Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens = P4k 10

so let's be honest. your reaction to the p4k review of TLoaS says more about you than it does about the new Tay album.
>>
>>127983305
Poptimism is dead. We're witnessing the rise of true metal, metal will dominate the charts once again!
>>
>>127982565
makes me curious. as someone who isn't familiar with her albums, what about the last 2 do you hate so much?
>>
>>127981408
Taylor might be starting her downward trajectory, but she'll always be popular to some degree. There's not going to be a fall out. It's normal for things to peak in popularity and then slowly phase out.
>>127981317
Pitchfork hasn't been relevant in over a decade.
>>127983417

Yes it is. It means pop supremacy. Deranged losers faggots and femcels astro turf dumb retarded mediocrity just because its a hot woman and theyre doing 3rd rate dance pop music. If not then we would have more diversity in musical styles. Its all stereotypical now. Either country music, rap or pop. If youre a chud and white youre into country music and nothing else to these peoole.

NTA but theyre just not very good. her first three were more country albums, then from red-lover she was on a hot streak of crowdpleasing pop bangers. nothing that id hold up as high art, but they knew what they were trying to do and did it well. folklore and evermore came out during covid and were music that was about mostly made up storytelling rather than "a boy dumped me and im sad". people really liked these and they got a lot of praise for their lyricism.

then she did midnights, which was i think an attempt to go back to the pop eras, but fell a little flat but we can kind of skip over

tortured poets department seems to have been her attempt to lean into this idea of her being an amazing storyteller/lyricist. shes always been known for (supposedly) writing her own music, but after the covid albums people kept hyping up how poetic she was. problem is, those albums were co-written by bon iver, aaron dessner, and joe alwyn, and in hindsight, they did the heavy lifting. tortured poets is THIRTY songs, which all sound the exact same. its her doing the same bad lana del rey impression over and over with lyrics like "touch me while your bros play grand theft auto" and "take my ring off of my index finger and put it on the finger people put wedding rings on". shes also absolutely seething that people reacted badly to her dating matty healy because he went on cumtown and that gets more songs than her now-fiance kek

the new album returns (imo) to solid pop production (because she finally ditched antonoff and brought back max martin), but theres nothing 1989-tier instrumental-wise (she said in a documentary she gives producers less control now), but it doesnt matter because the lyrics are still retarded
>he dickmatised me and his redwood opened my thighs

she went from making simple, effective pop music to falling for her own hype and believing herself to be a far better writer than she actually is. sorry for long post but i think the context is relevant
>>
>>127981408
White women will never be sick of Taylor. It's her core fanbase.

In layman's terms they're just very phoned in. It's kind of like comparing Empire Strikes Back to Rise of Skywalker (as much as I'd hate comparing TS to Star Wars.)

The other albums had very catchy, yet complex seeming arrangements marched with lyrics that seemed poetic or a cut above the rest. I remember the first time I heard Teardrops On My Guitar I was on a very boring road trip and allcthe songs were blending together until that came on and I was just captivated for the entire song, then afterwards literally was like: "What the heck was that." She had a lot more serious and emotional songs like (Tim McGraw, Begin Again, Cowboy Like Me, Peace), songs that almost seemed to border on hard rock and could seem to be described as operatic (Haunted, Sparks Fly, Long Live), power pop (Starlight, Cruel Summer, All You Had to Do Was Stay), even her more simple dancey songs seemed a cut above the rest and really socked you in the mouth (I Forgot That You Existed, 22, I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In, Delicate, Style, Blank Space, Shake It Off, Wildest Dreams, Mean, Speak Now, Better Than Revenge), and then of course there's the songs that really sold her which were the ones that felt like a woman in love just belting her heart out, either through pure infatuation or heartbreak that no other artist could touch (Red, White Horse, Enchanted, Out of the Woods, The Way I Loved You, Death By a Thousand Cuts, Mine, Back To December, Dress, You Belong With Me), and then she also had these songs which I can only describe as a "quiet anthem" that while having this subtle and subdued vibe also felt like they were arena rock anthems (Begin Again, Clean, Ours, Treacherous, Everything Has Changed, Hey Stephen)

And mixed in with all that was always some really great lyricism (Sparks Fly, Cowboy Like Me) and amazing arrangements (False God) the latest albums are just:
> OMG trolls are mean, how about I suck your dick?
>>
>>127985874
Actually I'm ftm and my cock is bigger than yours faggot.
>>
>>127983899
The first album that was honestly a misstep on a first listen and "needed to marinate" was Evermore. When she came out with the whole "sister album" thing it grew on me and now I do really like it, but if I'm being honest that was the first album I heard the first time and was like "...What?"

Midnights was the same, but grew on me less, though there are some songs I like. Poets was when I couldn't give her the benefit of the doubt anymore, and Showgirl just sealed it.

All in all I'd say the T.S. run was Debut - Folklore. 8 great albums in a row from 17 to 31 years old. That's not bad at all.

Maybe if she stops all this Era's touring and associated nonsense and just really settled down, takes a uear off to decompress, then comes back and does something great for 13 she can meet and possibly even surpass her previous heights, but she's stretched too thin and phoning it in at the moment. She's thinking too much like an executive of a company and not a singer/songwriter girl with a guitar.
