prog bros... our fav ewhore is talking about prog
>>127985168Broo!
>>127985190No. Just no.
Reposting from the last thread since I didn't get any reccs: is there any album that mixes traditional prog arrangements with some truly horrendous and disturbing imagery, i.e., not poetically disturbing like Soft Machine or some Peter Sinfield material nor edgy tryhard thrash metal bullshit but just truly, authentically upsetting stuff that makes your stomach turn? I was listening to pic related the other day and I've never been as sickened by a song as I was by Volcano, it is truly one of the most disgusting and wretched pieces of art that someone's had the cruelty to put out into the world and I feel a weird sadomasochistic desire to experience more music that's viscerally horrible like this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Veaw_c7yEPwI guess that Roger Waters is probably the closest to the one big prog musician who constantly invokes dark themes (the recording of the woman talking about murdering her kids in Three Wishes comes to mind) but compared to how raw something like Soundtracks is, most of his work seems incredibly soft in comparison. I basically just want to hear a devastating Swans-like concept album that's also very traditionally prog in a way that Swans (even if they're otherwise "proggy") isn't, and I want to hear it now, please give it to me bros.
Sun Araw is prog and I'm tired of pretending it's nothttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMSsS-PzkVE

>>127987427they're the prog equivalent to Queenvery skilled musicians, some great songs here and therebut overall vastly overrated
>>127986518It might not be as dark as the stuff you were mentioning, but Van Der Graaf Generator regularly had songs about dark stuff. Can't pinpoint the darkest at the moment, but Emporer in His War-Room is a great track about dark subject matter.https://youtu.be/euBNNA1aOoQ?si=zlZr-wA90dt1PBvh

Still the best Yes album
>>127987427They're popular which means they're underrated by aficionados despite being more competent songwriters than most comparable bands. Most 70s prog bands overextended their musical material to produce longer forms, which Rush didn't really do after their early phase of stitching songs together and calling it a single song (which critically favoured bands like VDGG got away with anyway). 2112 is probably the only album of theirs I'd call 'overrated' in some way; their formal invention, energy, and musical economy in subsequent releases is some of the best I've heard from especially the 'major' or mainstream prog bands.
Neil Peart's arms were basically done as a touring musician even years before he passed.
The thing is though I remember Alex still wanted to tour with Geddy while still respecting Neil's decision to retire but they'd name the act with a different name.Prolly thought that'd be too much of a hassle and just continue with Rush anyway.
>>127990003As I understand it Alex was having arthritis and recovering from a major surgery and had to be coaxed into doing another tour, but once it got underway he and Geddy both were eager to continue but Neil wanted to just do one leg and be done with it. As time passed Alex became content with the way the band ended and publicly ruled out any future touring as Rush after Neil died, and has kept a pretty low profile since then, while Geddy has been the workaholic who refuses to leave the limelight.

The best part of Firth of Fifth is the intro keyboard solo. Fuck Hackett.
>>127994953>Fuck Hackett.Fuckett
>>127994953I liked Steve until I heard Voyage of the Acolyte. The guy has no taste at all. Still a good guitarist, though
Sure reeks of Tony here
>>127995062His solo stuff is carried hard by his collaborators. They do all the heavy lifting and he just plays guitar. Bad look for a guy who constantly bitches about nobody taking his writing seriously.
>>127995072What would Tony reek of? Expensive wine?

thanks mr skeltal
>>127995073>His solo stuff is carried hard by his collaborators. But enough about Tony Banks
>>127994461I'm with Fripp on this one, you want enough cheese for all of your guests because it's filling and takes a long time to digest so it keeps them happy. Dinner party 101
>>127995503sure, but you don't call a guest out on it, it makes you look pettyhe's the one being rude, and if it's not a big deal, you shouldn't make a scene out of itFripp really over escalated the situation thereHackett also apologised afterwards and gave him another cheese. Accepting the apologies would be the polite thing to dobesides, it was cheddar. What kind of low-life tasteless cheapskate puts out cheddar for his guests (and not even enough of it for everyone)?
>>127995528Cheddar is inoffensive and these are Rock musicians we're talking about, they were all alcoholic chain smokers back then, don't waste good cheese on them.
>>127995560if you're hanging out with alcoholic chain smokers eating cheddar, you have no reason to be pissed at them for munching it up
>>127995565Touche, perhaps he should've just put out cat food instead.
>>127995528>>127995503this story has been great evidence to me that fripp is actually autisticthe dude wasn't even wrong, he just had abysmal skills handling a simple situation he could have just brushed offprobably why he allegedly had so many conflicts with his bandmates early in his career
>>127995219>All
Early 90s extreme metal bands were clearly prog influenced due to non-traditional song structures and long song lengths, but I haven't found any prog rock bands that had similar moods to stuff like thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2PvOU30PNs&list=RDW2PvOU30PNs&start_radio=1&pp=ygUaQXQgdGhlIGdhdGVzIHByaW1hbCBicmVhdGigBwE%3DI'm trying to figure out what prog bands they were influenced by but I dont have an encyclopedic knowledge of prog, anyone got any ideas?

How do I get into VDGG's discography? I love Pawn Hearts. It's probably my favorite prog album of all time, but I just can't get into their other stuff. Everything else seems to lack the density and atmosphere I like about Pawn Hearts.
